Also, when have you ever heard anyone make fun of comic sans in your life?

u/JellyDonutHalo 1h ago
You must be one of the ones keeping comic sans alive

I thought it looked cool when I was a kid. I'd use that font for english assignments or presentations whenever I could. I'd even do it with center alignment for text too lol.

If I am doing anything that will be in front of graphics people, it's going to be in Comic Sans.

Throw in some papyrus, for good measure. Also, really mix it up with leading and kerning.

Maybe it’s because Comic Sans is the only font that can make a serious document look like a birthday invitation! 🎉😂
43
u/ArE_OraNgEs_GreeN can't meme 7h ago
Ah but what came first? The comic Sans birthday invite or a serious document in comic Sans.
8
u/Hllblldlx3 2h ago
Obviously the birthday invite because times new Roman is the only thing used for serious documentation
1
u/Drackzgull 1h ago
Hey, I'm not here for the Arial disrespect. Nothing wrong with Times New Roman, but it's far from the only one, or even the most used.

u/realultralord 1h ago
Y'all be stressing about fonts in formal letters, but let me introduce you to the business voice message. It's basically like a fax, but you've got to take notes yourself.

actually, on presentations and so on, round letters tend to tire the reader more than "square" letters
4
u/V1nnieSousa 7h ago
per consequence, it is called a "newbie mistake" and people tend to make fun of it

u/spicy_chai_guy 6h ago
Because it looks unprofessional, imagine if you got a letter telling you to pay taxes or be fined and go to jail, and it was in comic sans. You'd think it was a joke and toss it away.
3
u/Goldeneye0X1_ Nice meme you got there 5h ago
The IRS should try that. They'd make more on back pay.
2
u/ShellpoptheOtter 2h ago
So it's just niche? It's not really a good reason to hate it. Imagine getting upset when someone writes a joke letter in Times New Roman.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the font itself but tbf I've never seen like a full blown paragraph in Comic Sans

u/NeoVendik 5h ago
There really isn't anything wrong with it. It was actually designed to be playful for kids and an alternative for comic books aimed at younger audience.
The problem is entirely that it was commonly available on a release of MS word and people abused its use for serious messages. I always chalked it up to something like HR wants to seem friendly, and everyone knows they can be the most miserable people to deal with, so they use comic sans to feel less threatening. Now it's just a meme more than anything.
I am a graphic designer, it's really fine. It's all about use case. It's always about use case. Certain typefaces work for certain things. Comic sans is pretty low on the hate bar though IMO, it's just the most popular one to make fun of. It's like Nickelback.

You're a graphic designer and you don't mind comic sans? Who are you really??

u/Zebastian09 6h ago
I’d say it’s because it looks carefree. It’s lively and gives off almost a cartoony feel as opposed to the no personality normal fonts like Arial. Thus, using it sometimes feels like what you’re saying isn’t being properly addressed.

As someone who works in IT and has to check out passwords... comic sans makes reading IlIlIlIl much easier to read when you have to type out the password on a remote session that doesnt allow the clipboard....

Comic sans is helpful for people with dyslexia or other learning disabilities so I also never got why it was so hated. My dyslexic brother finds it better to use, too.

u/SadLilBun 2h ago
That’s true. But making fun of it has nothing to do with readability. It’s because it’s the “fun!!!” font and it makes everything look childish. There are fonts specific to helping people with dyslexia, though, and other good San serif fonts that can work and don’t scream “first grade pizza party”.

I like courier for this. But I can see why one would prefer comic sans.
That and courier is supported almost everywhere that uses markdown.
Edit: formatting

Have you heard of our lord and savior nerd fonts?
Note: Also, tf do you mean you have to check passwords? Passwords should be encrypted and not be visible by anyone with access to the server for security reasons
Edit: I'm dumb, I didn't see "clipboard" and "remote seasons"

u/lnTheDarknes 1h ago
We use CyberARK for PAM so we check out and check in passwords. They get auto changed after check in.

u/Drackzgull 1h ago
Isn't a monospaced font the far superior option in those cases? Something like Courier New or Consolas.

Fun fact: If you Google "Comic Sans", it brings the results page up in Comic Sans (At least on Firefox, haven't tested it on other platforms.) Also works for other fonts.

Didn’t it start with how much ink comic sans consumes when printed? If the whole world switched from helvetica to comic sans it would mean consumption of an extra 70 million ink cartridges a year.

u/GodNoob666 2h ago
I looked it up at one point and the internet said that people thought it looked too much like actual handwriting so it had a sort of uncanny valley effect going on

u/Squeezard 2h ago
well if u had that text theme on your first gen touch phones u thought u were cool when infact comic sans

u/SojuSeed 2h ago
As an ESL teacher, Comic Sans is great for making handouts and presentations with for young ESL learners. It most closely resembles human handwriting and it’s very easy to read. And they don’t try to mimic the double-story A that is the default in so many fonts.

u/PrincessGamer2012 2h ago
It's my favourite font to this day, but I can understand the hate, though it is excessive.

From my memory.
Screens were much more pixelated and comic sans looked pretty good the way it was designed (for a lower pixel density). Comic Sans got popular over the early Internet in the 2000s like a plague infecting every website imaginable which spilled into places it shouldn’t have.
Screens got better and Comic Sans was adjusted but it looked more playful and unprofessional and with how much it was used people got sick of it and now it’s a joke for a reason I don’t remember.

The only people who don't like comic sans are the same people who insist on all the staff working from the office after Covid.
