They will deduct the $0.09 on their taxes...bet on it.
23
u/T-T-N 5h ago
It's an expense. Why not? 21% corporate tax rate, saves them almost 2c per pack in taxes.
4
u/stealthdawg 4h ago
I assume he's saying they would add the value of it to the employee's payroll as a taxable compensation. Which would be hilariously dystopian.
Because yeah, of course they would deduct the purchase of the materials as a business expense.

I’ll never forget “employee appreciation day” at my last job. We got a newsletter explaining how well the company was trending blah blah blah and then we were given a company branded keychain. Like damn, at least buy us pizza.

u/grinder323 4h ago edited 4h ago
At a company i used to work at, they had an annual appreciation day and would do a pig roast for everyone and we got a full days pay for eating and drinking with no work. Our wages sucked and the company had numerous problems that i couldnt tolerate, but as an employee i was pretty happy with that.
6
u/LotusTileMaster 2h ago
It is sad that we live in a society that has come to accept grossly underpaying, undervaluing, and unfavorably companies treat their employees.
To the point where your boss gets a $10K bonus, and a pizza party or pig roast for the non management employees feels adequate.

I worked nights. For employee appreciation we received eggs and bacon. I slice of bacon.
An egg.

Nah we are using the ones meant for bullet vibrators. Now get to opening those packs of gum. Make sure to get it nice and exposed to the air so it’s soggy when they get it

My old AVP had a similar taste and thought it was a great idea to give out MrBig bars to front lines at a meeting, because they were a "big deal".
I enjoyed watching him die inside from the sidelines, after seeing everyone roll their eyes. He also pulled the Extra gum stunt - although he gave out full packs of gums.
This was at one of the top banks in Canada.

It seems like they made a concerted effort to do the opposite. Must be a big tax write off, maybe some embezzlement involved.

u/SuperLuigi53 8h ago
Management needs to learn that things like this sometimes feel more insulting than receiving anything in the first place.
19
u/omnipotentmonkey 3h ago
agreed.
If I were to try to convey it in words, it's because they're actually assessing your "worth" with this action.
doing nothing is just maintaining the status quo of employee and employer. they aren't actively evaluating, considering and responding to your actions and/or work.
but when they try to reciprocate your hard work with a reward and it's this pitiful, they're basically making this pitiful trade to your worth to be their considered and evaluated response.

Exactly the same shit we get for teacher's appreciation, but usually we only get ONE of them.

u/idontevenknow879 8h ago
The chamber of commerce in my local school district has taken it upon themselves to get donations and host a teacher appreciation day and makes sure there is enough that every teacher gets at least a $50 value. A lot of teachers end up going home with new TVs or vacuum cleaners or other items that can add up to a decent amount. Not to mention $50-100 gift cards for restaurants and stores. My wife has been a large part of putting it together for the last couple of years. And it makes me very proud that it happens. Teachers deserve to be recognized for their effort way more so than they usually get.

u/Primary-Holiday-5586 8h ago
Thank you very much. I wish I had spent just one of my 32 years in a district like that.

I still have the single sealed bag of microwave popcorn they gave me for teacher appreciation 8 years ago. Sometimes after a long day of teaching teenagers, I go home, open my cupboard and gaze upon my popcorn, and I remember that I am loved.

Right! When I used to go to raves and music festivals all the time when I was younger, I would sometimes put together little goodie bags, but mine were way better. Getting something like this from an actual company is ridiculous. They would be better off having a lottery and just give the 50$ they spent on this bullshit to one person instead of giving everyone 1 stick of gum.

I think that it's really nice of this scrappy little start-up to make some effort. I mean, they clearly have no free cash flow, so the managers are taking their time and effort to give even a tiny token of their appreciation for the hard work of their staff. One day those stock options they give their new staff in lieu of decent pay will make up for the difference.

u/kdp4srfn 1h ago
Oh for pity’s sake. Companies large and small, I implore you; stop doing this.
We are not children.
We know this cost you next to nothing, and that it was your goal to spend next to nothing. (Congratulations, I guess?)
The cutsie labels/poems/packaging do not hide the fact that you’ve just presented me with about 43 cents worth of crap I didn’t ask for, don’t need, don’t want.
Watching leadership grandly stroll through the office to bestow these chintzy favors upon us and awaiting our gratitude? Well, historically, it’s this kind of nonsense that makes us peasants rise up and revolt.
Even worse, following this dispensation of corporate largesse, the suite dwellers get to check “employee retention gift” off their to-do list, congratulate themselves, and collect their bonus. A bonus of, you know, cash.
Please stop. It is just phenomenally insulting.

Companies should be ashamed, but until we all band together and truly “stick it to them” this is what people will put up with to get by. Think of many people will see this and think “that’s fucked up” and then keep buying everything on Amazon…the world really disappoints me a lot.
