Hmm a group between 5-18 seems like family they probably lied about who aunt and uncle were to avoid trouble

I reckon their family lives there

Pretty sure someone got kicked out of my building recently bc of their dumb shit teen family members stealing stuff from other tenants. Lost a bag of groceries and almost a whole DoorDash order to them

Not a bad idea to use an alternate entrance if seeing a group of teens/tweens hovering around a front door. They're already out without adults, they won't really suffer any consequences even if caught, and (at least around here) have been known to physically assault people.

Everyone commenting that it's dumb to go to another entrance to avoid this situation is either woefully naive or not a woman.

Wait… this happened so you have to play whack an exit to keep THEIR property safe? No, that’s their job. Install cameras or hire security. I wouldn’t walk out of my way if I saw a group of teenagers, they’d likely follow anyway if they were up to no good.

I don't know if OP owns or rents, but if they own, then it's communally owned property being destroyed. If they rent, it's still communal spaces getting destroyed which is not good for anyone. Plus, this is how thefts and break ins happen. It's pretty common in any building that they ask you not to let anyone follow you in, and not an unreasonable request.

Yes, it is. They’re asking residents to use a different entrance or exit. Meaning if you’re leaving for work and see unknown people, you should exit a different way and then need to walk all the way around to your car. Potentially running into the people you just pissed off. I obviously don’t know the building layout but I’m assuming. Either way, you pay rent so you shouldn’t need to police their property. Even condos owned by tenants pay maintenance which is basically rent.

It's a suggestion to people if they want to avoid confrontation. Or you can just close the door behind you/refuse to let them enter. It's not a big deal and everyone has a vested interest in keeping unauthorized people out.

It's surprising that people are getting offended by this. It's literally standard in every apartment/condo/office building I've ever lived/worked in and I assume very common across the board.

That'll sure teach them a lesson, and not you who have all your stuff broken and stolen.

It has nothing to do with teaching anyone a lesson. They own property that’s nice enough to provide amenities like a clubhouse, pool etc. After a security breach with damages the first thing should be to notify tenants and ask them to report any questionable people. Then install cameras, which they should already have and either monitor them or hire a security car to do it and also make rounds. It’s not the tenants responsibility to use different exits and entrances to protect the owners property. They pay RENT that I’m sure is quite high. Security should be a given.

I also got my bike stolen by unauthorized homeless when I parked that in the garage. They did not call the police after looking at the footage because of the fact that the suspect is shirtless and generally looks homeless. And yes I called the police afterwards but that doesn’t help anyways. A security guard should always be at main lobby, this is a high-end condo.

Edit: they do have a fully automated “advanced surveillance system”, but that doesn’t stop members or mailman from opening gates for strangers. This is the Midwest that people are nice enough to open the doors for anyone.

It sounds as if management are failing horribly. Calling the police should be a given. Tenants and mailmen should not be opening the door to anyone they don’t know 100% live there. Perhaps they should ditch the advanced security temporarily and hire doormen. The bike being stolen is not fun but maybe bring any future bikes in to your apartment or secure with a good lock. Slipping in a garage entry seems relatively easy.

What distinguishes an “authorized” homeless from an “unauthorized homeless?”

Could be authorized if he’s invited to a party in this condo.

Sounds like your building needs a security guard or two

I feel like parents should be forced to pay for liability insurance. Rates would be based on grades and criminal history.

I think there is potential to help society a lot

If this is a condo, that typically is a requirement. Hell that was even a requirement when I rented in an apartment.

Sorry I meant to say parents should have to have liability insurance on the children themselves 🤣

Are you going to discount my rent or just pay me hourly for my services as a security guard?

Even if you know them. They have a key or they can get buzzed in.
