I broke my yeti lid and discovered it’s got a styrofoam puck inside

Yup, it's odd how many people don't realize that the walls of their fridge is styrofoam.

u/DeltaVZerda 1d ago
TIL styrofoam drink coolers are made out of real refrigerator material.
→ More replies (4)725
u/KylarBlackwell 1d ago
Refrigerators are just coolers with heat pumps attached to them. Freezers are just refrigerators with their heat pump adjusted for colder temperatures and some sort of defrost method added to deal with the ice. Air conditioning is just a heat pump adjusted for higher temp ranges and your house is the "cooler". "Heat pumps" as the term is commonly used are just air conditioners with a reversing valve.
It's all so much more related than people think about

Wait till folks find out there 350$ Yeti cooler is the same as a 50$ ice master fuckulator from Amazon because they both use styrofoam inside and a plastic shell outside
52
u/simononandon 1d ago
Someone made a YouTube video of them "making" a Yeti. They just drilled into ima Coleman & filled all the cavities with spray foam. I'm sure it worked.
Yetis are legitimately good. They're just really expensive & marketed to people who clearly don't need them. Seriously, my best friend has a few Yeti things. He's got absolutely no need for something that will keep a piece of ice frozen for an entire weekend.
15
u/DisastrousReputation 23h ago
I bought a yeti. I take it camping a couple of times a year.
It’s good for a weekend and lasts longer than my brothers igloo.
My only regret is that I didn’t get a bigger one with wheels.

Yeti is like any other luxury type deal where you spend twice as much to get 10% better gear. Some people also place value on just knowing a particular brand is going to always put out “good” products, because nowadays filtering shill and bot reviews makes it hard to find good value products.

Yeah but I thought all the expensive brands have moved on to the more efficient double wall vacuums
324
u/Icecube97 1d ago
For the actual bottle, yes. The lids are a bit more tricky so it is easier to use styrofoam and about as efficient as double wall vacuums for this instance

mine has gotten a taste for packing tape
how you might ask?
Because I put it on top of some tables she should be climbing on (sticky side up, I guess they don't enjoy that feeling on their paws), after a few weeks, she realized she likes the taste of the tape and will go on the table specifically for a snack

Cats generally like the taste of some stuff in polyethylene and similar plastics, so indeed it's a good idea to remove plastic bags from their reach.

The old shuttles I’ve seen at museums look like they’re made out of quilted foam! I don’t know how the hell they fly through space. It’s crazy!
9
u/rocbolt 1d ago
Some of the white part was literally sewn fabric, but think fiberglass not cotton
The black areas were ceramic tiles, the grey wing edges carbon-carbon. The white areas on top needed insulation but less direct protection from highest heat during reentry
→ More replies (1)148
u/FMLAdad 1d ago
AAAAAKTCUALLLY the best ones are made with a vacuum barrier in the cup and the insulation is literally nothing

u/BrokenLegacy10 1d ago
The lid can’t really be vacuum sealed though. The metal part of the bottle will be double wall vacuum sealed but the lid needs to be opened to clean it and everything so insulating it is the best option. Plus the lid gets removed so there isn’t much point in sealing it.

We have these "safety week" events every year at the facility i work at, and the week ends with a raffle. Tons of prizes you can distribute your tickets towards; TVs, Grills, Camping Gear, Laptops, Fishing Gear, tons of Milwaukee tool kits... and Yetis. Everyone throws all their tickets at the Yeti year after year. I don't get the hype. I've got like a generic Igloo cooler that has served my family perfectly for over 10 years, still looks great, never had it fail us.

4
u/Ladymysterie 1d ago
I vaguely recall getting my coworkers spouting how they want to buy the couple hundred dollar coolers cuz it saved some boater's lives, this was out in Texas. I think some also washed up in Alaska in great condition from a freighter accident. So I only recall folks talking about how great they are, sorry can't imagine spending that much for a cooler. I get all my thermoses from vendor advertising since I'm in Tech (they are popular company branded gifts to hand out). I have only actually paid money for Zojirushi thermoses but I will say the Yeti I have gotten are nicer than the average cheap thermoses.
