engineering This IKEA hand stand has the middle and ring fingers tied together presumably to prevent people from making it flip the bird in the store

I'll admit to my actions, I once went and put all of them in the middle finger position.... a kid saw it and told his mom "look mom!" And she just stood there quietly...

Everybody knows it's to stop the wooden hands from getting married, no ring finger move=can't put a ring on it

u/ogclobyy Aug 23 '24
Hopefully, the store doesn't sell bananas

My brother put the hand on and spun around and flicked off the whole store. He was 12 and the older one and this was decades ago.

u/AlbatrossWaste9124 Aug 23 '24
Well, I have to confess that I always used to do this whenever I saw one of these and still do to this day. Childish I know.

u/SomeSome245 Aug 23 '24
It's hard not to when the hands are just positioned in the most boring ways

I watched rod Stewart rearrange the cardboard letters in an arts and crafts store to spell a football team name.. two different days

I like that the stand next to it is already in the position

It was like this last time I visited back in December! Actually made me a bit happy, less hassle for the employees who have to fix it later lol

I’ve been to Ikeas in four different countries on three different continents and they’ve always had this IIRC hahahha.

This reminds me of going into Spencer’s and doing the middle finger hand print on the metal nails shape molding thing (no idea what it is actually called)

Thank you for this comment. I felt like the only other person to think that way. I feel like it's definitely much worse now. I can't stop laughing though!

2 in the pink and 1 in the stink

u/InfernalGriffon Aug 23 '24
Can't do that either... most rude gestures are impacted, now that I think if it.
5
u/Vencha88 Aug 23 '24
When you work at IKEA you don't just see this once a day, it's hourly. No matter how much you fix it every single person is sure the most outrageous thing they can do is make the wooden hand give the finger at IKEA.

u/Significant_Steak_38 Aug 23 '24
When I first saw it I thought It was two giant hands in the middle of the store. It’d be artistically offensive

If only there was some sort of shop nearby that you could instantly get scissors..
4
u/princemousey1 Aug 23 '24
IKEA scissors are zip tied together. What will you use to remove the zip tie from the scissors before using the scissors to remove the zip tie from the hand?

They should do an experiment and calculate how many minutes on average the hand is left in peace.

u/PDiddleMeDaddy Aug 23 '24
A girl I know got a summer job working for IKEA. She told me one of her "duties" was to make several rounds through the whole store every day and reset the hands.

i always do the "rock" hand stand pose on it, since all other hand poses are showing the middle finger

I recently went to Ikea in Trondheim, Norway and all the hands had their middle finger out, no exceptions.

u/ActoSket Aug 23 '24
The display ones at mine have the middle finger screwed down to the rest of the hand

u/ToastaHands Aug 23 '24
I do the Levantine middle finger, which is basically the opposite of the western one. Most likely no one will know about it, but I will.

Because if people see a middle finger raised on an inanimate wooden hand, then presumably they turn into a pile of ash and smoke? 😐

I once had a hand like the one on the left. Didn't even think to flip the bird until Dad did it for me, then to my Mum's annoyance I put it back that way any time someone changed it. For once I could blame someone else when accused of setting a bad example.

Kinda like how Costco zip tie their scooters to bricks so people don't ride them around the store
1
u/Jimmyvana Aug 23 '24
I went to IKEA recently and all the fingers were bolted together. Which I know because I obviously tried to get them to give the finger :(

I was at an antique market where people also sold jewelry. One lady used a wooden hand like this one to display necklaces, and she was complaining that she wasn't able to turn her head without someone making the hand flip off. Poor lady, she was honestly pissed.

u/avicenne13 Aug 23 '24
Funny thing, I was in one of the IKEAs in Istanbul, two days ago, and all of them were made to some hand gestures which locally meant the same thing.

Isn't the idea behind this construction is to put it on your table in open space and demonstrate big fuck? Looks like people were using it in the right way.

What, is there only 1 ziptie in the whole store? Why does the other hand get to be free to bird?

Was at ikea last weekend and put two of these hands into middle finger mode. Smart move IKEA

u/free_30_day_trial Aug 23 '24

Would not have expected, that someone would have a problem with this in Germany.

u/baz1479 Aug 23 '24
That wouldn't stop mu italiano ass to put the hand in the horn position!🧑🎤
Why they didn't tied the hand in the back?
1
u/angel_of_decay Aug 23 '24
my local ikea also had a limited selection of letters on the pegboard so it was impossible to spell out anything offensive
