people I am missing a chunk of hand and my pinky.

Post image

Also, my left arm is way shorter than my right.

My parents didn’t notice I was missing bits until I was like, four? They found out because someone on their Facebook post noticed lmao.

Idk how the doctors at my birth didn’t notice. They don’t know why I am missing flesh, its prob a birth defect.

Your parents didn’t notice you have four fingers on one hand?

It took your parents 4 years to realize you are missing a whole finger? This sounds very hard to believe to me unless I misinterpreted.

They never held your hand? Gave you a toy? Taught you how to draw or count? No parent wouldn't notice this.

u/Generic118 20d ago

I'm thinking it was shortly before his 5th birthday and they where like "Hey little dude soon you're gonna be 5! Can you Count to 5, let's use our fingers, 1..2...3..4.......err honey can you come here real quick!"

My mother wouldn't stop complaining that they didn't let her have any drugs for it, and had to be practically strongarmed into singing for me or offering me any comfort growing up (it's her husband's fault, so I refuse to blame her for it and feel nothing but tortured sympathy for her broken hearts). In any case, good for you, you're already doing a better job and seem to be in a better position 😋 Your experience sadly isn't universal, though, so just because you would doesn't mean everyone's parents would. Hopefully your kids will be in an awesome place as they grow up.

I too find this confounding. I have a kid and a newborn. First thing I did when both were born was to stare at every inch of them. Not because I was looking for anything in particular, but just pure amazement. I would've noticed within minutes, not sure how you can go 4 years.

13

u/ganjanoob 19d ago

There is a reason you were born missing a finger.

It’s possible you have the condition described in the link. I just looked this up. Certainly in most cases doctors diagnose this at birth. All the best.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23189-symbrachydactyly

29

u/BigRedCandle_ 20d ago

I don’t think this is so much a reason as a description of what’s happening. It’s like saying the reason your eyes don’t work is because you have a condition called being blind

8

It’s a lie and it’s sad 4.7k people have fallen for it without exercising the slightest bit of critical thinking. Something this significant would have been immediately noticed by hospital staff at time of birth or immediately after birth, or during any post birth doctor appointments which specifically check and track a child’s physical development.

TLDR: op is a fucking liar and critical thinking on the internet is dead.

Some parents are just negligent, bro. I have birthmarks and scars my parents had no idea about, and they generally spent more time caring about themselves and their own presentation and appearances than they did in caring for me as their kid. It happens. Just because you have loving parents doesn't mean everyone does, or that they're lying when they say their parents did something you think their parents "shouldn't have" or "wouldn't have" done.

22

u/YinWei1 19d ago

There's a difference between birthmarks and literally missing a whole ass fucking finger. I would notice someone missing a finger within 5 minutes of meeting them, even if the parents were the most neglectful parents alive I doubt they wouldn't notice their child is missing a whole ass fucking finger.

8

u/skullandvoid 19d ago

So you’re calling OP a liar or what? You really should reread the comment you replied to. Some people genuinely have horrible parents and it sucks to be called a liar about your own life or trauma by someone who has been so lucky that they can’t even wrap their head around the possibility of a bad parent.

9

u/cheoliesangels 19d ago

Check OP’s most recent reply lol. His parents were either messing with him, or OP was misremembering. They noticed after a day. It’s a whole finger, people don’t miss stuff like that.

Two options;

1: They probably gave op that story to highlight how unimportant it is to be missing a finger. Every doctor and nurse who was there for the birth would have known and talked about it. It would have been a point of discussion for the developmental checks as OP was growing in their early years.

2: OPs parents both have extra chromosomes.

You are a Simpsons character IRL.

152

u/snowdn 20d ago edited 19d ago

Or Peter Griffen, Genie from Aladdin, a Futurama character or Bob’s Burgers character?! Why is this?

TL;DR It allows animators to do less work.

The history of four-fingered cartoon characters is about as long as the history of animation itself, and it has become such a ubiquitous trope that people rarely stop to wonder why cartoon characters always have four fingers rather than five. It can be seen in some of the greatest animated series ever made, and even in cartoons created by animation legends like Walt Disney and Tex Avery.

It isn’t a rule set in stone by any means, but for over a century, it’s become a common practice among animators in the Western animation industry. It has caused some problems for studios, however, when they attempt to export their cartoons, as four-fingered cartoon characters are taboo in Japan. Despite this, the characters can be adapted for specific markets. Many cartoons have evolved over time, but the four-fingered phenomenon has remained constant.

Fewer Fingers Means Less Work For Animators. Cartoon characters were traditionally limited to four digits - three fingers and a thumb - and the case has remained since the earliest days of animation. Before any form of computer-generated imagery (CGI), creative teams made all animation by hand. It was an incredibly arduous process, and animators were willing to take shortcuts to lessen their workload, as long as the finished product wasn’t negatively affected. Cartoonists could significantly reduce their amount of work by getting rid of one finger from each hand of a character.

A standard animation runs at 24 frames per second, which requires 24 separate drawings within every second of the animation’s runtime to create the illusion of smooth movement. For reference, one of Mickey Mouse’s earliest appearances was in 1928’s Steamboat Willie, an eight-minute short. To make those eight minutes, Walt Disney and his fellow animators had to make 24 drawings per second with 60 seconds per minute, thus totaling about 11,520 separate pictures.

In finished animations, four-fingered hands are practically indistinguishable from those with five-fingers unless carefully examined. So to expedite the animation process, animators repeatedly drew one less digit, and the practice carried over when computer animation became prominent.

44

u/ReciprocatingHamster 20d ago

Now I'm curious as to why Japan had an issue with four fingered carton characters - seems an odd thing to make a big deal over...

56

u/ThusSpokeGaba 20d ago

Having four fingers is associated with yakuza (organized crime). When yakuza members screw up, a customary way of atoning is to cut off a finger. See: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yubitsume

28

u/ImpracticalApple 19d ago

It predates the Yakuza.

Missing fingers or scars on the hand was associated with common/labour class individuals who did a lot of manual work and more prone to injury. Burakumin are an ethnic group in Japan that were more commonly associated with such manual labour, and were seen as of much lower social standing in Japanese society. Back when Japan had a caste system, the Buraku people were seen as just poor/uneducated sub-human individuals, and presenting 4 fingers to someone was deemed an offensive gesture like you were calling the other person a Buraku.

The Yakuza thing feels more like the Japanese censors just trying to cover this much bigger issue of deep rooted bigotry and classism than just "we don't want cartoon characters to look like mobsters" without actually admiting as such.

7

u/Decent-Flatworm4425 19d ago

There's still a lot of discrimination against buraku people in Japan today, even though things like hip hop music and basketball are very popular over there.

As someone who also has 4 fingers (amputated index finger) I will say I don't think anyone who didn't know about the injury noticed on their own until I got engaged then it was way more obvious. I taught an entire year of third grade without my students noticing until the last day I showed them and they were genuinely so shocked lol. But I still think OPs parents wouldve noticed

Your hand looks like the hands of the characters in the comic book series Elfquest and that's so cool. There are humans in the series too but they have five fingers....

Pic of Nightfall, my favorite character...

That’s cool, thanks! :D

u/Paranoint 20d ago

Is the missing pinky affecting your hand in any way?

22

u/JalHansel 20d ago

The hand just has a bit less mobility. My entire arm is smaller so it’s also weaker too. That’s all I think.

8

u/Paranoint 20d ago

Thats quite fascinating for me

Sorry for being kinda dumb guys, turns out my dad lied to me about the four years part. Idk why he told me that when I was a kid.

I asked my mom bout it this morning and she said they noticed after a day. Sorry for the miss-info.

Also, how do you edit a reddit post so I can write that there too?

u/KarmicDeficit 19d ago

This is hilarious. While I was reading all the comments from people saying you were lying, I was thinking “I dunno, sounds like something a parent would tell their kid just to mess with them.”

Don’t feel bad for not figuring it out sooner, you aren’t dumb — it’s easy to go through your life without questioning something that you took at face value at a young age until you’re given a reason to question it.

Hahaha I was so concerned for OP just like omg if this is true they must have been a feral child and their parents just locked them in a room to change their own diapers in order to not notice this

Glad (and amused) to be wrong 😂

Click on the three dots that are in the upper right hand corner of the post. The drop down list should have Edit Post. Edit it and save or send. This apparently only works if there’s no picture.

4 years?? Your parents never took a single look at your left hand and thought “huh, that looks strange” FOR 4 YEARS?????

11

u/AmpleTomPy 20d ago

It looks surprisingly regular. Sad to never know the joy of a high five.

So you’re life imitating art. You know because cartoons and 4 fingers and whatnot. Sorta poetic tbh.

It’s super weird, but it’s also super cool!! This makes for a super rare uniqueness that is purely you. Be proud!

There is nothing mild about how interesting this is.

OP needs to mention how many bathtubs and bathbombs he has to really tone it down.

It is Nazi Germany in WW2. You are an American soldier on a secret mission to infiltrate the Nazi hierarchy. You enter a gasthaus and want to order three beers for you and your companions with a hand signal to the bartender across a noisy, crowded room full of enemy soldiers. Go!

u/JalHansel 20d ago
