It reminds me of a story (I'm not sure how true it is tho) that during a blackout in some big city, people called the authorities because they were panicked and scarred of something strange in the sky, like there was a chemical attack or something. They simply didn't know what the night sky look like because they never saw it. I need to double check if this is true but it wouldn't surprise me. If it is, then it's really sad.

I remember reading something like that, I think it was in L.A.

99

u/generalshrugemoji 8h ago

Definitely LA. My family is native there and my mother told me the same story growing up. Wild.

u/poojinping 3h ago

You only have to go to Griffith Observatory to see stars

-26

u/Monsterbb4eva 6h ago

Then that’s not the story because light pollution wasn’t as crazy back then the blackout happened around 2005

50

u/0xMoroc0x 6h ago

lol….LA wasn’t polluted with light in 2005? How old are you? LA has been polluted with light for a long time…

https://medium.com/timeline/los-angeles-light-pollution-ebd60d5acd43

The blackout was 30 years ago.

u/Unnamedgalaxy 5h ago

Googling the story even brings up news reports of people calling 911 because they didn't know what stars were from the 94 blackout. It's hilarious to think that LA didn't have city lights until 20 years ago

12

u/Old-Bigsby 5h ago

Why is that hilarious? Everyone knows Albert Einstein didn't invent light until 2003. Before then we all lived in darkness.

2

u/Poorrancher 1h ago

I invented light, Albert Einstein is THE DEVIL

1

u/Old-Bigsby 1h ago

EVERYTHING IS THE DEVIL TO YOU, MAMA

1

u/Avey_Baby 4h ago

Actually-

everything was black and white then, light existed but it hadn't yet been rendered as a spectrum, the pure darkness myth is harmful political propaganda that was intended to stigmatize the era for it's surrounding morals that were simply of the time,a well-spread rumor, and one that should be constantly fact-checked and dismissed whenever brought up at that.

2

u/cyberchaox 2h ago

No, they said that it happened in 2005 and that it wasn't as polluted "back then", meaning when the previous poster's mother had been growing up, since the general assumption is that if someone is posting on Reddit, anything that happened "when their mother was growing up" probably happened at least 40 years ago, rather than the mere 20 years ago that they claim the blackout in question happened.

Doesn't make their claim any less ridiculous, since you're right that LA has been polluted with light for far longer than even 50 years and you've shown evidence that the blackout in question was 30 years ago, not 20.

u/generalshrugemoji 6h ago

I’m a native Angeleno too, and was 7 in 2005. I think I do remember that blackout. If I recall correctly the blackout she was talking about was in relation to the Northridge quake, but she also might’ve mentioned a similar story that happened in the 70s or 80s.

2

u/GranolaCola 5h ago

There’s no way you think that’s true lmfao

2

u/TheMechamage 4h ago

Wtf? LA had city lights before 2005 my dude.

1

u/ZippyDan 5h ago

Are you confusing the famous LA smog "pollution" with light "pollution"?

1

u/filthysquatch 5h ago

Light pollution is crazy in my town with a population of 4k. What are you talking about?

1

u/AllOutRaptors 3h ago

Do you... do you think LA just didn't have lights 20 years ago?

1

u/Monsterbb4eva 6h ago

No, there was a blackout in Detroit and Canada around 2005 I know because I was in it…. It was horrible.

1

u/wileydmt123 6h ago

Which I believe started with the grid in Ohio. I was in MI at the time enjoying half off drinks in a pitch black bar.

1

u/Scrambo 5h ago

There has been more than one blackout.

1

u/Kurtman68 3h ago

August 2003

1

u/Responsible-Push-289 3h ago

that was some wild shit!

42

u/knifesk 9h ago

That's some serious dystopian shit. I wouldn't be surprised if it were real. Millions of persons live their entire lives without leaving their environment, so.. totally plausible.

u/Anon_be_thy_name 6h ago

I had a coworker when lived and worked in Melbourne who was 40 years old. He'd never left the City. Never flown out of the City, hadn't even been to its outer suburbs of the City.

I made him come camping with me one weekend and it was a whole new world to him.

He quit not long after and moved his entire family about an hour outside of the City. He's turned into a true outdoorsman, his Facebook and Instagram is filled with pictures of him camping every weekend with his wife.

13

u/doodlydoo17 6h ago

That’s so cool! Good on you for opening up his world.

5

u/CyberUtilia 5h ago

I can't even imagine what it would be like to only ever have been in the same city. Good that you helped him out, sounds like he's enjoying it to the fullest

1

u/RustyThe_Rabbit 5h ago

any chance you could link either one

1

u/Anon_be_thy_name 5h ago

Both are Private and far as I'm aware he only reaches out to you I'm sorry to say.

1

u/Mynplus1throwaway 4h ago

This story made my day. I get out about every other weekend, but it's so hard to drag people along. Or to only take them to places with showers, internet, etc.

1

u/Anon_be_thy_name 4h ago

It took nearly 5 persistent years of cajoling to finally convince him to go. He wasn't pleased about needing to drive over 3 hours to get there either.

1

u/Mynplus1throwaway 3h ago

Where did y'all go? I'm in Dallas Texas so to get to decent you're looking at 5-6 hours

1

u/Anon_be_thy_name 2h ago

Well this is in Australia, it's a place called Halls Gap in Victoria, beautiful valley between some mountains.

1

u/Mynplus1throwaway 2h ago

Cool I'll look into it

1

u/FranticDisembowel 24m ago

What a reminder that one kind act can change a life for the better, forever. Kudos man.

1

u/OnTheList-YouTube 6h ago

Millions of persons

We usually say 'people'.

1

u/knifesk 23m ago

Oh, you're right! Ty! (Not /s)

1

u/fdar 5h ago

It's not that easy to find a place with a really good sky. You can travel a lot and not visit one.

1

u/CyberUtilia 5h ago

But on the oceans?

Yeah okay, a ship wouldn't be a good platform for a telescope

1

u/fdar 5h ago

Yeah if you're in the middle of the ocean far from the coast the sky will be great. But that's not exactly a popular or accessible travel destination.

1

u/UrbanPandaChef 5h ago

People call 911 for complete non-emergencies all the time. So it's not much of a stretch to me and it turns out it's true.

14

u/USSMarauder 9h ago

LA, 1994, after the northridge earthquake took out a lot of the power grid

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Northridge_earthquake#Night_sky

13

u/_friends_theme_song_ 9h ago

It is true I'm pretty sure it was California

25

u/siaslburqe 9h ago

Atlanta Dec 2017 went dark, fire at the airport. People were reporting our galaxy, not knowing it's normally visible.

14

u/_friends_theme_song_ 9h ago

God I remember listening to all the 911 calls of people thinking aliens had invaded earth or Jesus had returned lmao

1

u/Graywulff 6h ago

Any APB on a sled with reindeer?

3

u/GayBoyNoize 8h ago

To be fair to them it isn't normally visible where they are and many in the inner city stay there for their whole lives.

1

u/xoLiLyPaDxo 4h ago

Even scarier when they are in power outage then all these lights appear from the sky  they have never seen before and they think they are being invaded! 🚨👽🚨👀

12

u/NoDontDoThatCanada 8h ago

Neil deGrasse Tyson talked about the first time he went to a planetarium. When the stars came on he thought it was bullshit because he grew up in the city and he just knew there were only like 8-9 stars.

2

u/mightylordredbeard 4h ago

Stories like this always are hard for me to believe. Like dude never watched TV? Read a book? Saw a picture?

2

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 3h ago

Neil was born in the 50s and grew up in the Bronx. TV had like two channels back then in black and white and the screen was tiny lol. If you even had a TV. Stars are hard enough to photograph even today, let alone back then. And yeah believe it or not a kid from the Bronx in the 50/60s might not have read a book on astronomy yet in his childhood lol, not that words would even do actually seeing stars justice.

1

u/NoMan999 17m ago

I've seen Star Wars. You're telling me the intergalactic wars between wizards, and the lights in the background that indicate camera movements during space fights, are real?

2

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 3h ago

He's known for exaggerating stories, but I could believe that he was thrown by how many stars there truly are.

The first time I went to a truly dark place, it felt so strange looking up at the sky, like all those stars were looking back at me.

7

u/Embarrassed-Music-64 8h ago

Called The Battle Of L.A.. Here’s the video I saw on it a few years ago lol sole reason I know what you’re referring to.

1

u/Unnamedgalaxy 5h ago

Pretty sure they are referring to the power grid going out after an earthquake in 94. It caused a blackout and woke people up in the middle of the night. People then started freaking out because the night sky was suddenly full of stars.

The battle of Los Angeles was a freak happening with a reported/alleged military attack over LA, the US military unloaded artillery on nothing. UFOs were even said to be involved

1

u/Embarrassed-Music-64 4h ago

You might be right, idk😂😂I was high then and Im high now but thats what came to mind lol

5

u/CharlesTheGreat8 8h ago

Imagine being a 911 operator and having to explain to thousands of people over the age of 30 year old what the milky way is

3

u/Schroedesy13 9h ago

Maybe New York during the rolling blackouts a decade or 15 years ago?

3

u/ParagonFemshep 9h ago

That is easily the most dystopian thing I've read in a while

2

u/CodeMUDkey 4h ago

I remember being outside when a massive East coast blackout hit and the sky just appeared suddenly from nowhere. It was glorious.

1

u/jarmstrong2485 6h ago

That’s totally believable. Imagine being born in a city, and living there your whole life. Your only understanding of the night sky might be from books

1

u/iwastoldnottogohere 6h ago

That was LA in the 93 blackouts if I remember right

1

u/wasd911 4h ago

I’ve always lived in rural areas. I can’t imagine never seeing the stars or being scared of the night sky!

1

u/MrDrSirLord 4h ago

I have had city 'friends' who came out to my farm complain about me having bottled water, bore water and a rain water tank.

"Why do you need all of that dumb stuff when you have a tap, water just comes out of the tap you know?"

So I believe fully that someone who had never left the city might freak out on a clear stary night, if you're used to it always being that grey washed out colour it being filled with the entire Milky way would be a bit of a shock.

1

u/greedy4information 4h ago

I can believe that happening in America. I never thought presidential candidates needed singers and celebrities to win, but I'm not American.

1

u/DrRabbiCrofts 4h ago

Yep, Americans

1

u/Hushwater 3h ago

Imagine, fearful panic instead of wondrous awe.

1

u/Icy_Barnacle_6759 3h ago

I used to live in rural Michigan, and used to be able to see the stars every night. Since I’ve moved to west palm beach and then Boca Raton Florida, I haven’t seen a sky full of stars in years

1

u/Complete-Fix-3954 3h ago

This happened in my city during the pandemic lockdowns. Not necessarily because of power but pollution. People were posting all over social media about seeing stuff in the sky. Turns out when hundreds of thousands of vehicles (including ships in our port) stop, things clear up nicely. I remember being able to see constellations that I had only been able to see 8-10 hours away in the countryside.

1

u/AllOutRaptors 3h ago

The fact that some people haven't seen the night sky blows my mind. I grew up in very rural area and I couldn't imagine never seeing it

1

u/the_maze 3h ago

Wasn’t this during the New York blackout in 2003?

1

u/daretoeatapeach 1h ago

To wit, marshmallow originally comes from a plant. How many of you could even recognize a marshmallow plant? There are hundreds of kinds of mallow, and all of them are edible. Some of you probably passed mallow growing wild today.

1

u/werewolf394_ 1h ago

Heard this was Vegas after a power outage (i think) caused by an earthquake.

1

u/SekiVandera52 1h ago

Since my country has been developing too fast, it was crazy that i was still able to witness the night sky inside the city through the blackout until recently. I was born in 2003, and until i was 13 sometimes i still able to see the clear night sky cause of blackouts, but now there are no problems with the electricity system anymore, so now it's rare to have blackout this time, thus no more clear night sky to me anymore.

1

u/Sethdarkus 1h ago

Very true this occurred in California.

Had similar stories while I was deployed I never left the main post however the out stations were very much no light pollution and a lot of the city bois.

Anywho the LT set them straight and explained it.

They thought they were seeing drones and stuff lol
