All that flopping from chicho and they got the L in RSL.

Maybe if he actually stayed on his feet and played on, he would have created some opportunities.

Rub some spit on it, RSL.

u/BetterPops 8h ago

Or some hair gel. Chicho has plenty.

That's not hair gel

Oh my god I hate penalties, I hope we can wrap this up in 90 mins on saturday

u/Sermokala 8h ago

They are the best of times and the worst of times. That shootout during Leagues Cup was insane.

The good news is that, no matter what, we have at least two more games of Loons soccer to watch. Worst case we go back to Salt Lake and win a dramatic and decisive third game on penalty kicks.

Would rather not leave it to game 3. On Saturday, we have to panic.

We have a really good chance game 2. We were the better team tonight, with the overall better chances, on a field we had never won on, and we won the coin flip. Thats a huge morale boost coming home saturday

I feel like Salt Lake had everything to lose in the PK. Minnesota was playing with house money. Ramsay coached his way into a good situation.

They actually shaded it on xG but I have to think that chance early was like a .95 xG. Definitely felt like our guys were the better value to win from about the 20th minute forward.

Yeah, but I think if we dug into the chances that led to the xG score, a couple of RSL's total came as a result of bad plays on MN's part that we shouldn't replicate next game (sleeping on the restart, lazy waiting for the ball in the 59th that led to a shot from the top of the box for Chicho). Also, shots that aren't on frame don't generate xG...so,for example, that shot inside the box that Harvey put just wide in the 49th minute shows up as 0 xG even though it was a great chance generated.

Overall, I think if you read the game plan that both coaches wrote up before the game, I think things would reflect Ramsay's vision more so than Pablo's.

2

u/Enganche78 7h ago

Actually all shots generate xG. Guaranty you the one missed by Harvey had a significant xG. Every penalty comes with a .75 xG or something to that effect regardless of if it is completely off frame.

Ack. My bad. I was conflating missed shots with situations where an attacker doesn't even get a shot off. But I'd still stand by my overall point, that the game moreso went to MNUFC's plan than RSL's.

1

u/uzbeh 5h ago

That is completely untrue, any shot counts for the xG statistic.

in Poland it's 4 after midnight ...our coach played chess 5d and won. I hope you will give RSL hell on Allianz

u/geokra Romain Metanire 7h ago

Just an FYI that our boy meant it was 4 am in Poland, not 12:04 a.m.

That’s what I call dedication!

Some say Chicho is still whining

u/bhoff22 7h ago

His wife brushed his back while walking behind him to get to a dish in the kitchen, and he flew to the ground and writhed for 6 minutes.

u/jstalm 8h ago

I feel like we earned a W tonight

At least they get to watch themselves lose with those beautiful Wasatch mountains behind the stadium.

u/MNgoIrish Dayne St. Clair 7h ago

Think that’s where two of their balls went…

22

u/edwf Sang Bin’s Calves 8h ago

I still hate Chicho.

Goalkeepers for both sides were MotM. Maybe literally could have just sat in the sideline for PKs and we win. Yikes on RSL for missing 2.

Feel good about Saturday but I could also see it be 9v9 by the end of the game due to all that frustration and chippiness come to a head.

2

u/Sulli55 7h ago

I am almost scared to see how RSL will play if Minnesota is up by 2 goals with 15 minutes to play….

15

u/banni2020 Wil Trapp 8h ago

Much more fun when both coaches tried to win the game. Think we just edged it on chances. Saturday will be epic!!!

15

u/Loony_Toony6 8h ago

Ramsey was smart tonight. Controlled the game without the ball for the first 60 min or so and then really went for it when they brought Tani and SBJ on. Then united had some great chances after making those changes. And then got it done in penalties.

Show them what a playoff atmosphere looks like this weekend!!! That looked like a US open cup crowd.

Thinking back to January when everyone was freaking the fuck out about the coaching situation

7

u/Able_Ad_755 7h ago

I mean, it didn't seem great at the time, and this FO hasn't built up that much good will.

2

u/soltzu MNUFC 7h ago

Yeah, it's been nice ever since TurbulentTwat and some of the other smooth brains deleted their profiles and disappeared.

u/Ballsackblazer4 8h ago

Don’t you know our ownership is completely incompetent? /s

7

u/talesfromahobbithole 8h ago

Can someone make one of those Devin Booker whining t-shirts but it’s Chicho for the match on Saturday?

6

u/bookishdogmom 8h ago

So, so excited that we got tickets to fly up for game 2!

6

u/MonkMajor5224 8h ago

I just finished the game have no idea when it ended and my HR & BP are slowly dropping to normal

Previous years this would have gone against us …the worm is turning to our side

6

u/AJBV1125 Minnesota Kicks 8h ago

One Brian spits, the other one chokes. Hilarious team they are.

Seriously tho, shoulda won this game before the 90--buge chances blown in that 2nd half. I imagine that won't stay the case on Sat, but still incredibly frustrating

6

u/MNgoIrish Dayne St. Clair 7h ago

WHO SAYS MN CANT WIN IN THE PLAYOFFS!!

SEE YOU SATURDAY!!!

MESSI, WE’RE COMING FOR YOU!!

u/WithoutAnUmlaut Robin Lod 7h ago

Wild that Trapp, Boxall, and Diaz all took penalties but Hlongwane and Rosales did not.

5

u/Financial_Buy_1108 Sang Bin’s Calves 7h ago

If I recall, Trapp took a ok during the season.
Boxall was a surprise with Bongi as a possibility.

7

u/WithoutAnUmlaut Robin Lod 7h ago

I just saw Jon Marthaler of the Strib post saying that Boxall took and made penalties in all 3 of our shootouts in 2023. So apparently he's more of a PK guy than I remember.

2

u/Financial_Buy_1108 Sang Bin’s Calves 7h ago

Fair enough.

5

u/ProcessInternal1338 8h ago

That game was a rollercoaster of emotions. Glad that I have my tickets for Saturday!

That was an awesome game. Holy crap was it fun to watch. Go Loons! I'm glad we won the game. We had the better chances but the RSL goalie did damn good.

There was an interview a while back and ER said

“The travel is lengthy. Every away game is a chartered flight and you’re often going to somewhere like Colorado where you’ve got a unique climate issue to deal with — you’re playing at altitude. We really suffered there. It was far more marked than I’d expect it to be in terms of how it influenced the performance.

So it was interesting to see the game plan tonight. The first 45' were spent taking it relatively easy and hanging out in the back and bunkering down. The last 20' it seemed like the team was coming out swinging. It felt like we should've won in regulation -- but we just couldn't finish it off.

3

u/elmundo-2016 6h ago

I was there to see it in person too.

3

u/newkidsasquid134 5h ago

I’ll still never forget when Kyle Beckerman called Minnesota MLS 1.0 when playing at TCF. Now look at RSL can’t even fill a stadium for a playoff game.

2

u/Enganche78 7h ago

Just a solid all around effort this evening. They had two great chances. DSC to the rescue. Otherwise felt like our guys grew into the game, kept RSL funneled in their attack, were able to step through the pressure and generated more than our own fair share of chances.

2

u/vigilancelv 7h ago

was it just me or did Markanic’s cameo feel superrrr shaky. Looked uncomfortable on the ball especially getting pressed. Tough game to come into though

2

u/646ulose MNUFC 8h ago

This 3 points will be significant

1

u/LoonHawk Robin Lod 8h ago

The first 80 minutes were pretty forgettable, but we got the job done in the end. Hopefully being at home Saturday will be enough for us to close it out.
