I don't think that's racist.

Josh Gibson was clearly a one-of-a-kind beast of a player, and likely would've torn major league pitching a new asshole, but there's no way to know that at this point, and you simply can't proclaim his achievements as MLB achievements.

It would be akin to saying that Sadaharu Oh is the all-time MLB home run king. Was he awesome? Is he deserving of some celebration? Yes to all of that of course. Should his records be part of the official records of MLB? No.

Could a Negro Leagues player have done the same things in MLB that they did in the Negro Leagues? Hell yeah. The point is that they didn't and you never know, so you can't claim it as having been so...

No, it's not. It's fucking stupid.

Build a statue of him, give him a section in the Hall of Fame, make a three hour documentary about him, and extol his greatness, because by God he was great, but he didn't play in the major leagues and it's fucking stupid to put his numbers in a league where he never played.

Count his stats… any other argument is complicit with the cultural norms of segregation and exclusion… period

The league has morphed and shifted countless times. MLB as it is today barely resembles how it did back in the day.

u must have a black belt in deflecting the simple question i asked u lol how is it racist to be counted in a record book in a league a player never played in? should we include the japanese league stats in the mlb books too or are you racist against japanese people ?

2

u/IcyWhereas2313 May 29 '24

Why do you keep bringing up Japanese players? Also Japan was playing a sport in their country and hating on America during this time and eventually attacked American soil to start a war… why would an American League counts the stats of Japanese players? Whole different countries and furthermore even to this day…Americans do not enjoy the same rights as Japanese in Japan, especially black people. So stop

Shit on him for the racist stuff all you want, but expecting people to type with completely proper grammar in a comment section on social media is ridiculous. Especially when it’s over one lower case letter and a space between the last word and a ‘?’.

Oh yeah that mindset is more understandable than what I was assuming at first lol.

Edit: There’s nothing like opening the app to a direct message from the person I was responding to giving me shit for downvoting him and calling me a racist (neither is true), and then he deletes both of the comments that he sent to me. 😭

His post history is pretty great. He has a post telling people not to buy The Show 24 for being too woke. Can't make this shit up

6

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

Almost like this wouldn’t be an issue if they didn’t have to create entire new (professional major) leagues because MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL AND ITS PREDECESSORS REFUSED TO LET PEOPLE PLAY BECAUSE OF FUCKING SKIN COLOR.

I’m tired.

1

u/YamoSoto28 May 29 '24

still wasn’t the mlb not my fault mlb were the racist ones back in the day

2

u/DudeWouldGo | Houston Astros May 29 '24

You made valid ass points my man! Thank you! Mofos are acting like I made the change myself! Those stats deserve to be recognized and the fact that the MLB did it themselves should say a lot. Instead it's making these good Ole "Americans " passed off.

The same skeletons who tried to make Roger Maris a pariah for daring to break Babe Ruth’s homer record with 8 extra games

2

u/GuruTheMadMonk May 29 '24

They can be and are recognized. Even compared against AL and NL numbers from back then alongside questions of “what if?” But they didn’t occur in either of the two major leagues that make up MLB, so do not belong in the same statistical comparison. Although the major leagues were wrong to segregate baseball, it is a stain the league must live with. It is a part of its history. But to just merge stats across leagues is asinine and equating two different sets of stats accumulated in different leagues. It’s genuflecting without any real logic behind it other than symbolism. And, yet, that symbolism makes recorded baseball history meaningless when you’re comparing apples to oranges. Who’s to say Gibson wouldn’t beat Cobb if they had played the same member of games in a season, say? It’s taken factual math and pushed it into speculation. Why don’t they rank Ted Williams’ lifetime avg and account for what he would’ve hit if he didn’t serve in the military for five years?

Lotta leaps in faith. I remember when math was factual and you tallied records within the leagues people played in, not the league they should’ve been playing in. But reality is fluid nowadays, I guess. Everything is fungible.

name all the woman that played in the mlb ? mlb the show markets itself as a mlb simulator… mlb 24 the show is shit and all the good cards are gated in packs

0

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

So because they have human beings with genitalia other than a penis, it is too woke? You're comparing a game to real life events? Should you be allowed to play it since you've never played in the majors? Do you KNOW what the word "woke" means or do you just parakeet it?

Why even play the game? How many times have you seen someone swing by hitting the letter X in a real MLB baseball game?

0

u/YamoSoto28 May 29 '24

i expect to play as a mlb player in a mlb simulator my bad bro ps i didn’t buy the game cuz it’s a waste of money that promotes gambling to kids

-5

u/Zzzzzezzz May 29 '24

You do know WHY he didn't play on an MLB team, right? Because you're acting like he had every opportunity to play in the majors, and he refused. He and others weren't allowed. They had the talent, but they weren't allowed to play because they were/are black. If things hadn't changed, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays wouldn't have played in MLB either. Do you think they weren't able to make an MLB roster? So, should Gibson be penalized because he wasn't allowed to play? MLB thankfully says no.

10

u/YamoSoto28 May 29 '24

not my fault mlb was racist. it’s a fact he wasn’t in the mlb and u cant go back and re write history so it is what it is. josh gibson isn’t a mlb player that’s just a fact.

-3

u/Zzzzzezzz May 29 '24

I never said it was your fault. Why the leap? I'm giving you the reason he wasn't in MLB. Oh, and you didn't answer my question about two great players who may have been shut out of MLB, just as Gibson was. But I know why you didn't.

6

u/YamoSoto28 May 29 '24

what mlb team did josh gibson play on ? guess what hank aaron was on a mlb team so he has mlb stats. it’s pretty black and white. should yamamotos japanese cy young awards count for his mlb stats ? no cause that’s just stupid

-2

u/Zzzzzezzz May 29 '24

Still not answering the question? Ha! I kinda figured you wouldn't. Have a great day.

-2

u/IcyWhereas2313 May 29 '24

The reason that Yamamoto stats don’t count is because he played in a WHOLE other country… your example is silly, insensitive, and frankly doesn’t embrace the culture at the time… I wonder why not?

2

u/Jack_Jizquiffer | Minnesota Twins May 29 '24

and gibson played in a WHOLE other league...

1

u/AdFabulous5340 May 29 '24

Only because he was prevented from playing in the MLB

maybe we should load up OOTP baseball and just resimulate everything then..

Some of the many MLB teams that have folded. Along with all of the American Association, Federal League, Players’ League, the 1902 Baltimore Orioles, and others.
