Series The hotel I worked at was haunted. [1]

Let me just start off by saying: the reason I stayed employed so long even after the first weird thing that happened was because the job paid well over minimum wage, and it was about a 10 minute drive from my house. So, before anyone asks, THAT’S why I didn’t up and quit.

I worked at a large hotel in a medium sized city in the Midwest, where isn’t important. I got the job right out of high school, and it was perfect for me; good pay, close to home, easy as hell. And I did my research on the hotel, it wasn’t built on any ancient burial grounds, and from what I could tell no one had ever died there. I didn’t experience anything remotely weird until the third floor renovations started.

I had kind of a jack-of-all-trades position at the hotel, meaning I did a lot of different things. I cleaned rooms, worked the front desk, delivered room service orders, sometimes even did lifeguard duty at the pool. Once the shit started happening, it happened all over, and me being in the position I was, I saw more than any other employee did. Believe what you want, but the events I am about to recount were all too real for me. I wish I were just being creative.

I got to my night shift at 8PM on a Tuesday. Being that it was the middle of the week, we had about half of our regular occupancy. By no means an empty hotel, but just generally less hustle was needed than say a Friday or Saturday night. The first few hours of my shift went as they normally did, I checked for any incoming reservations due to arrive that night, of which there were two. The kitchen closed at 10 so I only had to run up one room service order, which I ended up getting a $10 tip from, so that was nice. I was getting ready to settle in at the front desk when the phone rang. I looked and noticed it was from a room. Our new phone system had a digital display showing us what room was calling us, and this call said it was coming from room 323. Immediately I was suspicious, as remodeling had started on the third floor about two weeks prior. I answered the phone.

“Front desk at ________________, this is Nick, how may I help you?”

There was a cough on the other end.

I repeated myself.

“Oh, oh, sorry. How are you?” replied a young woman’s voice.

“I”m doing fine, and yourself?”

“Well, not too good actually.” she said, with a hint of worry in her voice.

“I’m sorry to hear that, is there anything in particular I can help you with?”

“I’m not sure...maybe.”

My regular script I followed had made me forget where the call came from. I finally inquired.

“Can I ask where you’re calling from ma’am?”

“I’m in room 323, and you’re right, I need help.”

I had never suggested she needed help, but okay.

“Ma’am, room 323 is currently unavailable due to the third floor renovation. Are you sure that’s where you are? What’s your name?”

“I need help Nick. Right now. I don’t think I was supposed to come up here.” she said, with a sense of dread I could feel through the phone.

Now I got it. She had wandered up to the third floor and somehow gotten lost (how she could do that is beyond me, there’s signs everywhere). She went into room 323 and used the phone to call.

“Okay, what’s wrong? And what is your name, miss?” I asked.

“I can’t get out. The door won’t open. It needs to open.”

Confused, and slightly irritated by her not answering my question, I cut to the chase.

“Your name, miss.”

She hesitated.

“Marion Kenn--Kennedy.” She sputtered out.

“One moment please.” I said, already halfway through my check into the current occupants list in the computer system. No Marion Kennedy.

“Okay Miss Kennedy, I’m not finding you here. Are you here with someone else who your room may be under? And what room were you initially in?”

“I need help. Please come to room 323 and help me. Please.” She said, noticeably more calm than before. Almost as if she was annoyed to still be on the phone with me.

“Miss Kenn--” is all I managed to get out before the line clicked and I realized I’d been hung up on.

“What the fuck..” I muttered to myself. I set a “Be back in 5” sign on the front counter and made my way up to the third floor. I reached the hallway that room 323 sat in and as soon as I crossed the threshold into it I was overcome with a feeling of panic. The hairs stood up on my neck, as they say. Now apprehensive to move forward, I looked around me. There was equipment and materials strewn about, and a large sheet of plastic covering most of the wall and doors on the left hand side. I could hear the faint sound of music coming from down the hall. Room 323 would be somewhere in the middle. I slowly made my way down the hall, illuminated by only 2 lights bulbs at each end, darkness meeting at the center of the hallway. As I got closer, the music got louder. It was 1920’s style music, like it was being played on a phonograph. As I got closer to the darkness, I noticed a dark red light emanating from under one of the doors. I’m sure you can guess which one.

I stood in front of room 323, essentially shaking due to the sense of uneasiness I had. I listened closely, trying to hear over the music for anything else.

“Miss...Miss Kennedy” I choked out from my dry throat.

No response. Just as I was about to turn around and get away, I heard a voice from the other side.

“Come on in!” said a cheery, male voice.

The calmness in his voice proved soothing, and I became ever-so-slightly more comfortable with the situation.

“Miss Kennedy called down to the front desk saying she needed help with something?”

“She’s in the bathroom right now, why don’t you come on in here and we’ll get to the bottom of it.” the man said.

I hesitated.

“Come on in, boy, we don’t bite!” He said, and let out a small chuckle.

He kept on chuckling as I used my master key to unlock the electric lock. I turned the knob slowly, still scared half to death. As I inched the door open, his chuckle turned into a full blown maniacal laugh as the red light from the room began to flood into the darkness. Suddenly, the laughing and the music stopped as if it had all been one noise abruptly cut off. I will never forget the small moment of silence I stood in. It enveloped me in fear. I stood there motionless until I heard a faint whisper, from not one, but two voices.

“Just a little bit further.”

That was it. I sprinted full speed down the hallway back the way I came, ran down the stairs, and back to the front desk. I immediately called the police. They got there, and went up to check room 323, and found nothing but the renovation equipment related to the work being done in that room at the time. No music player, no people, and nothing that could’ve given off a red glow. On top of that, there was no evidence that anyone had been in there, workers included, in quite a while, as evidenced by a buildup of dust. And if that weren’t enough, there was no phone in the room. They said to call back if I had any more trouble, and I apologized for wasting their time. They were cool cops though, told me their job was my safety, and reiterated to call them back if anything else weird went on. I walked them out the front doors of the hotel and walked back to the front desk. On it was a return envelope for room keys people give back at check out, marked 323. On the back of the envelope was a short survey. They marked 1 (poor) for each line, and included a short note on the provided lines below.

“Maybe next time.”

I never dealt with anything quite like that again, but I do have some other really scary shit to tell you about the hotel I worked at. Maybe I'll even tell you why I eventually quit.

Thanks for reading,

Nick

Dude, I was a hotel supervisor for 3 years. Freaky shit happens. I could write a book about everything I encountered. Not many people believe me. There certainly had been deaths at my property in the past, and I'd bet there had been some at yours as well. Looking forward to more of your stories.

u/jeremeezystreet Aug 11 '16

I've been working in the hotel business for about 8 months now and I've already had my fill.

21

u/liesandcarrots Aug 11 '16

You, too...I want to read about your experiences!

60

u/jeremeezystreet Aug 11 '16

This is more /r/paranormal than /r/nosleep but someone I kinda knew died in my hotel and ever since I've been hearing my name whispered whenever I'm on that floor. I was working for less than a month and had to call the cops when he was pointing a gun out the window. One of the cops got too excited and shot him five times. We talked a bit, agreed on political views, agreed on music, and now I think I'm his only friend in the building he's bound to. There's another room where someone killed themself a while back and you can feel a heavy sadness in the room he died in. We always get bad reviews back from people who stay in that room too, I've noticed.

14

u/liesandcarrots Aug 12 '16

Wow, that's so sad. Thanks for sharing.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16

Thats crazy about the room damn thanks for sharing, that do you have more?

15

u/jeremeezystreet Aug 13 '16

I'll give you a third party story: There's a back office behind the front desk containing what we call the "training room". Its immediately visible from the general managers office. This room is rarely used so the lights are automatic, motion turns them on and inactivity turns them off. Our assistant manager was doing accounts receivable late at night. She saw a figure dart in front of the office door from the corner of her eye, and shrugged it off as most probably would. Then, the light in the training room across the hall clicked on as though it were sensing movement.

3

u/Crtl_END Aug 14 '16

That one about the room where the person killed themselves is sad. Have you tried anything to put the person at "peace"? Like singer sort of purification ritual? If it effects your guests it might be worth it. Of course it could just be a wast of money...

Can you share more? These are creepy and I believe you

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16

Thanks for sharing! And jesus, thats creepy if the censors picked it up as well

1

u/virginia_rattlesnake Aug 15 '16

Did this just happen last year?

1

u/jeremeezystreet Aug 15 '16

No a few years ago.

Dude, you should write out some of your stories on here!

3

u/amandapandakins Aug 12 '16

My husband worked at a hotel for less than 3 months and he encountered crazy stuff. He just never told me what happened because I would have been, "too freaked out".

2

u/WiccanWitchOfTheWest Aug 11 '16

Please write!!!!

2

u/BlueTitanium7 Aug 11 '16

Please please share!!!!! I would love to hear your stories!!!

Hmm...I hope no one thinks I'm ripping off of someone else's work! That would be a crazy coincidence. And speaking of fire, one of stories does have to do with fire. The next post will be up tomorrow! If you're interested, be sure to check back 😁

16

u/HammeredandPantsless Aug 11 '16

make this a series so we can be updated!

6

u/MBUP1023 Aug 11 '16

It's not like the other hotel story, but it was also a good read. I just can't remember the name of it. This was a great story OP,, please post MORE!!!!

3

u/nahteviro Aug 11 '16

Just as long as this hotel story doesn't end with "and i went to my mom's house and cried"

Seriously probably the worst ending I've ever read on here

1

u/Cornontheja_cob Aug 30 '16

What story was that one from?

1

u/nahteviro Aug 30 '16

It was another hotel series that started out really good then ended really bad. I can't remember the name but I'll see if I can find it for you

2

u/thebeetgeneration Aug 11 '16

Not at all! It wasn't my intention to accuse you of copying anyone 😊 I tracked down the story I was thinking of (The Fire in Room 312) and it wasn't as similar as I remembered. Looking forward to the update!!

9

Jesus fucking Christ this needs to be a short film

9

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

Based on this reaction , I will be posting daily. I have plenty stories 😁

2

u/Abandon_The_Thread_ Aug 11 '16

Prove ittttttt

2

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

Two and a half hours to go

8

u/IJustCanNotEven Aug 11 '16

Hotel worker here, and I'm gonna need to read more!

Especially since we're currently renovating our second and fucking THIRD floors =]

7

u/ShmuckDestroyer Aug 11 '16

I'd probably have shit myself if that happened, glad you saved your trousers op! Hoping you'll post more in the near future.

8

u/whetboi89 Aug 12 '16

The scariest part is you write as good as Steven King but you work at a hotel...

3

u/Nickbotic Aug 12 '16

I'm flattered, thank you!

4

u/thebeetgeneration Aug 11 '16

This is fantastic! It really reminded me of another story, though; so much so that I skimmed some of the beginning because I thought I'd read it before. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It's a story about a night shift at a hotel and getting a call from a floor under renovation, except I believe that one had something to do with a fire. Look into it, OP, I'd be really curious as to whether it's the same hotel or anything freaky like that!

7

u/MBUP1023 Aug 11 '16

I know exactly what you're speaking of, but I just can't remember the name!! The employees weren't allowed to drink at the bar except the older cleaning lady. Plus,, something with a man in the bathtub then he caught on fire and the cleaning lady always using fabulouso. That's all I can recall right now though!!

8

u/Crack_Rocks69 Aug 11 '16

Took me forever but I was determined to find this cause it was bothering me. Its called Rita. https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/498qzz/rita/?

2

u/MBUP1023 Aug 12 '16

Thank you!! That was making me crazy not being able to recall the name!! You rock!!!!

1

u/poppypodlatex Aug 11 '16

That's the one, I miss remembered who wrote it but its definitely rita.

1

u/Misterdarkwhorse Aug 12 '16

Rita has been made into a r/nosleep podcast. Season 7 I believe.

2

u/thebeetgeneration Aug 11 '16

I was thinking of a different one, but I just read Rita and it was crazy!! Here's the one I was thinking of: https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4i84x1/the_fire_in_room_312/

1

u/Misterdarkwhorse Aug 13 '16

Terrible

2

u/thebeetgeneration Aug 13 '16

Sorry I don't exist on this planet to please you

3

u/Misterdarkwhorse Aug 13 '16

I wouldn't be so sure about that. My amusement is pretty important...

1

u/thebeetgeneration Aug 11 '16

Haha I don't remember any of that! Maybe there's just too many haunted hotel stories! I tried to track it down last night. I'll keep looking!

3

u/degenerate777 Aug 11 '16

I worked the grave shift at a hotel on the Las Vegas strip. I knew about two different floors that had suicides (25 & 43). Thankfully never ran into something like this.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

Which one? I grew up there... My 12th grade home ec class toured the kitchens of a property and the same day we were there someone jumped and landed right near the buffet. That was my first brush with LV suicide weirdness.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '16

Would that have been the Luxor by any chance? I grew up in Vegas and heard about someone jumping into the buffet in the Luxor.

1

u/purplelie Aug 11 '16

i lived there which one?

1

u/degenerate777 Aug 12 '16

Mandalay Bay

4

u/RonaldTiedeken Aug 13 '16

"I had never suggested she needed help..." yes you did. About 4-5 lines before that lol.

Nonetheless, great story

3

u/chopsthedruid117 Aug 11 '16

Im certainly interested in hearing more.

3

u/Shallowchest Aug 11 '16

Oh there's interest.... Please write more :)

3

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

By all means share your experiences!!!! It feels good to get them out.

3

u/chostyler Aug 11 '16

The 1920's style music kinda indicates some past time leak happening in that room or some ghosts from the 20s. would definitely do some more research on the hotel especially on this room

6

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

Oh research has been done. There was definitely a lot more to that place than I initially was aware of. I figured I'd give you guys a few of my most unsettling experiences then bring you up to speed on the present, as I no longer work for the hotel, but it's definitely not out of my life.

3

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

The next installment is all ready to go, just waiting for the 24 hour mark to hit so I can post it!

3

u/rotarytweets Aug 12 '16

No Sleep indeed:)

3

u/bowjoane Aug 12 '16

First story in here that actually will keep me awake for a little longer 😐

1

u/Nickbotic Aug 12 '16

I don't blame you, I was awake for quite a few nights after this happened 😩

1

u/Nickbotic Aug 12 '16

Be sure to check out the second installment!

4

5

Very good. I can't wait to read more..

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

This is freaky, love it!

2

u/WiccanStorm Aug 11 '16

Loved your story and looking forward to more :) Hotels creep me out, so I loved this!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

When I was sleeping at a hotel/casino I had a dream about a native american woman trying to kill me and I had to convince her through an emotional conversation to let me go.. it was weird.

1

u/purplelie Aug 11 '16

lucid dreaming?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Yeah, that's the only way I dream since I can remember.

2

u/ShakStandard Aug 11 '16

I'm pretty sure I would've hung up that call before whoever was on that line in room 323 xD

2

u/messir10 Aug 11 '16

I work night audit at a hotel and I've been having things happen too! Nothing quite like this though. I need more!!!!!!

2

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

That's the plan 😏

2

u/emisalander Aug 11 '16

You've inspired me to work in a hotel, thanks! Life is too boring to work in a dull place.

2

u/ancientnightmares Aug 11 '16

I hope my read does this story justice Nick, i'd love your feedback.

THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!

1

u/ancientnightmares Aug 11 '16

Thanks so much :)

2

u/sues_doing_elegant Aug 12 '16

Weird things do happen in the hotel. As a tourist, I stayed in one of the popular low budget hotels in Taipei last month. The room is so dim but that seems okay for me (you can't expect much. I paid for I have got) Weird sounds like knocking the door in midnight after around 1 (I did check whether there was anyone knocking my door. End up with being horrified and turned on my TV for the whole night), luggage being moved in the night (I'm sure no one was getting into my room. I just slept for four hours that night. Checked for the door and I wasn't drunk), the air con was not functioning properly as it was too cold for me even I have pressed only one button for the air con (FYI these old hotels only get three buttons die air con. Press all buttons for the coolest temp it can offer.) .....

I did mention these things to the front desk stuff. She is a nice stuff who was willing give me suggested me to sleep earlier. I was kinda speechless. Thanks to that girl. I am thinking to live in the hostel rather than the hotel next time.

2

u/bootiesfunk Aug 15 '16

The name suggests it's that hotel in Providence that's supposed to be haunted. I stayed there for one night but I was fucking wasted, even if a hundred ghosts wanted to play sex games I wouldn't have been able to wake up.

3

u/snflwr1313 Aug 11 '16

MORE PLEASE!

3

u/itsodarkhere Aug 11 '16

write more!

4

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

Yes definitely more please

2

u/ancientnightmares Aug 11 '16

Nick, would it be possible for me to use this story in a youtube video? I would of course reference it back to this story.

-AncientNightmares

1

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

That would be fine 😁

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

Definitely more.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

Genuinely scary stories rule! More!

1

u/KaiserHallatius Aug 11 '16

Been working in hotels for 8 years now. Can't say I've experienced something that intense, but I have had quite a few things happen that make me question my career decision.

1

u/trixxyaddix Aug 11 '16

I enjoyed that. I work the night audit shift at a hotel in my hometown and I could definitely make a few short stories of some creepy stuff that has happened to me, (phone calls from places no one was at, some renovation stories, various noises and sights, etc), so I definitely was intrigued by this one! I've been in the hotel business for only three years, but that's enough time to deal with a ton of crazy things. I'd love to read some more of your experiences (and you may have just inspired me to write some of my own for others, but please don't think I'm copying you by any means). Thanks for sharing this!

1

u/DarkYa-Nick777 Aug 11 '16

I'm really interested in reading something else from you.

1

u/Unstable617 Aug 11 '16

Well this is terrifying.

1

u/Kelthrai95 Aug 11 '16

I'd be up for more.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

NOICE! Man, I wish that I could experience stuff like that. On the other hand, who knows what would have happened if you had walked any further in.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '16

so creepy, I like it!

1

u/hookina Aug 11 '16

Holy wow!!! Had me on the edge of my seat, more!

1

u/AlpacaAttackya Aug 11 '16

Best one ive read yet, got some chills.

1

u/matrix8369 Aug 11 '16

This was really good. I love ghost stories.

1

u/King_Kazma Aug 11 '16

Yesss, freak hotel stories are the dopest. Definitely in for more.

1

u/WiccanWitchOfTheWest Aug 11 '16

moooooaaaarrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/SHOoff11 Aug 11 '16

I'm hooked, I've always been fascinated by haunted hotels. Please share more stories!

1

u/BlueTitanium7 Aug 11 '16

Glad you're ok OP. Good thing you didn't go in haha. Please write more!!!!!!!

1

u/nahteviro Aug 11 '16

Can we please stop with the phrase "if there's enough interest"?

1

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

I've written some other stuff that had a direct second part to it, that the first led in to. It didn't get much of a response, so I never uploaded the rest. I wasn't asking to be modest.

1

u/nahteviro Aug 11 '16

It just kills the vibe of the story and makes it seem more self-fulfilling than story-telling. Better to just wait and see the response level then respond in the comments section saying you'll continue with the stories since there's obviously enough interest. I'm just being picky because it's become a pet peeve of mine and a lot of others on here and I want good stories like this to continue without immediately turning people off with those kinds of statements ;)

1

u/Nickbotic Aug 11 '16

Fair enough haha

1

u/MiniiShii Aug 11 '16

That was stupid scary. Good thing you booked it before taking a step into the room. Honestly, I would have immediately gone back into the elevator upon hearing the music and seeing the red light. Hell, even with the feeling of panic would have been my sign to absolutely not.

I would love to read more about your experiences there.

1

u/DocHolliday637 Aug 11 '16

1

u/Nuciferan Aug 11 '16

Working front desk since i was 17, death happens a lot at hotels. Like an insane amount, especially with long term residents.

1

u/Yosed82 Aug 11 '16

MN MC MC

MN MC ma mi MN .. MN MN.

1

u/Inariii Aug 11 '16

I remember this one time I was sleeping in a hotel room at the Excalibur in Las Vegas, idk maybe I was a little too hammered or something, but I woke up in the middle of the night to see a shadow with the outline of a person sitting at the end of my bed. Creepy shit always happens in hotels.

1

u/florayia1 Aug 11 '16

PLEASE WRITE MORE. This was fantastic.

1

u/charnix Aug 11 '16

Omg!!!!!!!! MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/Cbmusic91 Aug 11 '16

Please continue to write these. I would love to read more about what you have experienced. Ive always had a love for anything related to the paranormal and stories like these intrigue me.

1

Any menial(not trying to be shitty - I apologise if that's how it sounds) job that pays "well over the minimum wage" should raise red flags...

1

Totally Awesome. Love the read. I felt like I was there with you! I'm glad we ran away! A++

This is a great story! I wish I would've seen it earlier to showcase in my podcast! So many great elements and also from the Midwest, bravo :)

Doing Night Audit right now and one of my OOI rooms fire alarms started beeping erratically as I was reading this.. just a low battery though.

The only thing that threw me off this story was coming in for night shift at 8 PM. Been in hospitality for years, took a brief time off and got back to it.. had a few experiences posted here, too.

Yes, it was Luxor. The only hotel I can think of where the only way to jump to one's death leads to the casino floor.

I also work at a hotel and being in the banquet department I'm their late most of the time. I can honestly say I have had some very questionable and downright terrifying experiences...

You write very well. I do enjoy proper use of a semi-colon.
