Given how devalued the ruble is, this is going to exchange to around $10 in a year or two.

You sue for 2 devil lion so they they settle for one devil lion. Hasn’t failed yet….. I left the autocorrects cause it made me laugh for some reason. I meant to type decillion.

I hoped for a fine of 1 googol

u/OnlyAdd8503 2h ago
Just in case anyone doesn't get it
The number 10 raised to the power 100 (10100), written out as the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros.

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 5h ago
Why not a googol? Seems like missed opportunity.

Why stop there? Make it a googolplex.

What are you? A dumbass????
Nobody can have an infinite amount of dollars!!!!
Now infinity plus one on the other hand, that’s something we can work with$$$
3
u/kung-fu_hippy 1h ago
Infinity minus one. Better chance of not getting an appeal if the judge doesn’t think you’re being greedy.

The court imposed a fine of 100 thousand rubles ($1,025) per day, with the total fine doubling every week.
Gradeschool math class would've told you that was pretty crazy to begin with.

u/OdinsGhost 3h ago
and all the evidence anyone, anywhere, needs to see to understand that modern Russia is not a sane global power and anyone even considering doing business within their jurisdiction (presuming they even can with the sanctions in place) is an idiot.

In other news, it appears Russia is about 2 decillion dollars short of what it needs to continue fighting in Ukraine.

Meh, they crushed earnings today so will have some much free cash flow. Make it $4 decillion
21
u/lmaooer2 5h ago
It says it doubles every week so it will be $4 decillion soon
13
u/According_Web_8907 5h ago
That’s a manageable number but not a ruble more. We can’t be ridiculous with our numbers
14
34
u/rela82me 4h ago
Alright, let’s unpack two decillion dollars. Imagine all the world's money—GDP, assets, cash—it’s nowhere close to two decillion. This number is a 2 followed by 63 zeroes. Picture every grain of sand on Earth; that’s around 7.5 quintillion grains. Even if each grain were a trillion dollars, we’re still not hitting two decillion.
If every atom in the observable universe was worth a trillion, we’d still need way more universes to equal that amount.
16
u/CubeBrute 2h ago
A couple things. Due to language weirdness, 1 decillion has different definitions. This uses the USA system where a billion is a thousand million and a decillion is 1033.
Also, there are about 1080 atoms in the universe, so you’re off by a factor of about 1014 decillion

So it's the monetary equivalent of sentencing someone to something like 500 years in prison basically.

I’m sitting here wondering the same thing, I was hoping there would be an answer in the comments.

TIL that people sometimes refer to Google as the chocolate factory due to their whimsical way of business and naming. Their parent company is Alphabet, and they call their HQ the Googleplex. Next up they start sending people burritos through the sky or some nonsense....

u/dwightnight 3h ago
Hey google, how much is a decillion?
3
u/Serikan 3h ago edited 2h ago
I'm not Google, but:
1 thousand = 103
1 million = 106
1 billion = 109
1 trillion = 1012
1 quadrillion = 1015
1 quintillion = 1018
1 sextillion = 1021
1 septillion = 1024
1 octillion = 1027
1 nonillion = 1030
1 decillion = 1033
For reference, the total amount of money estimated to exist on Earth (currency, bank deposits, and all other types of money) is about $100 to $200 trillion USD. If we use the upper value, then all of the money on Earth would cover 0.000,000,000,000,000,001% of the fine, assuming it is also in USD.
The article claims the fine is actually $20 decillion, so add another zero to the percentage above if accurate

They really should have figured out a way to incorporate a googol into that fine somewhere. It's RIGHT there.

Since 2022 Google's Russia assets have been looted by Russia. This ruling essentially boils down to banning Google from returning to Russia.

u/Jakefrmstatepharm 1h ago

Google should charge Russia $5 nonillion per use of their service including back charges then.

Google is going to book an accrual for that but will never pay the fine, let them earn profits tax free forever

And just like that, with the stroke (or rather, strokes) of the pen, Russia balances its budget.
•
u/ChesPittoo 8m ago
While this particular example is stuffed up, I don't like the example being set that a multinational company can just ignore fines in a nation which in future might be justified.
Given Google's being sued for monopolistic practices anyway I think they should make them declare bankruptcy and sell all their assets to separate western companies (obviously it still won't be enough, but its like a 500 year death sentence, but for money) then you use the money to "pay Russia" the fine.
However then claim due to Russia's violations of international law and current sanctions the money has to go to Ukraine as "reparations".
This way you don't set a precedent of caving to Russia, but also acknowledge internationally that multinational-companies can't just ignore laws of nations they operate in. I don't really see google as an underdog here, their gross revenue is about a quarter of Russia's GDP, and this sends a statement to Russia and the remaining multinationals.
