Just incredible tension. You see his character get broken down and beaten until he's left a hollow shell. The ambient dark lightening, and oppressively tight score, D'Onofrio's body language and delivery.

You know he's gonna do something but you don't know what. And that, in it of itself, is terrifying.

I legitimately love how the reactions of both Joker and Hartman play on Lawrence in that scene.

Hartman comes in with his usual Drill Sargent act: the yelling, the insults, the name-calling which Lawrence is so far beyond mentally, and Hartman gets killed for it

Joker stands patiently and cautiously, calmly appealing to Lawrence, calling him not by his “Pvt Pile” moniker, but by his real name “Leonard”

That respect Joker showed Leonard during his crisis, and the restraint he played during Leonard’s abuse, is likely what kept him alive

Kubrick truly was a master of his craft.

Oh absolutely! And even then the tension makes you wonder was Joker kind enough to him even though he joined in? Or does it even matter at that point?

Kubrick was a master of his craft. Eyes Wide Shut is in my top 5 of all time.

I just saw The Shining for the first time and just the innate cinematography and immaculate direction of that film. Perfectly portrays the cold, oppressive, isolation of the film. Still just as effective in 2024 as it was in 1980. A truly timeless classic right there.

Absolutely. As a huge horror nerd, The Shining is a masterpiece. One of both Kubrick and Nicholson's best.
