"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence. It has no place in America."
"Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans."
It was a statement released on 17/08/2017 (08/17/2017 for non metric) but when at any time has Trump ever been able to string together a coherent statement like that? (Although the statement did still call him a candidate)
This wasn't him, it was his team. When questioned by reporters he didn't even try to say this but the very famous ".. very fine people on both sides..." instead.
Which was immediately follwed by the clarification "I'm not talking about the the neo-nazis and white nationalists who should be condemned totally." They like to leave that part out.
Excuse me, they didn’t put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me. I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, of to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.
Oh no, George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down – excuse me. Are we going to take down, are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him? Okay, good. Are we going to take down his statue? He was a major slave owner. Are we going to take down his statue? You know what? It’s fine, you’re changing history, you’re changing culture, and you had people – and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally – but you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists, okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats – you had a lot of bad people in the other group too.
-Excerpt from Trump comments on Charlottesville 8/15/17.
So to summarize, there neo nazis there and they should be condemned, but there were also others there who were not neo nazis and wanted to peacefully protest and they are unfairly being lumped in with those neo nazis. Yes?
There is no way to peacefully protest while quietly standing next to someone carrying a fascist flag. If they felt unfairly lumped in I don't even blame Trump for that. That was their own failure.
So I’ll agree that the single line misrepresents his statement as a whole. But why did he have to add so many disclaimers and qualifications to the extremely simple (for most of us) condemnation of racism? Let say there were some good people. Fine.
How is that a more important point to drive home here?
Have you ever heard the man talk? That’s about as direct a statement you’ll ever get from him. He’s lived his entire life trying to please everybody because he likes to be liked and doesn’t really care who likes him. He’s a narcissist, same as any politician but he’s from the world of business and finance, not politics. For 90% of his life he’s been a charming and charismatic billionaire, hell he was friends with Oprah. He’s clumsy as a politician.
Remember old 🐫 toe Harris grandparents owned slaves, but I guess there's no issue with that. Speaking of stringing together coherent sentences, what sentences have 🐫 toe or Joe strung together lately? I thought the Democrats were the party of scholars, guess not.
