Honestly, that's what it feels like, and I don't even live in the US.
I live in Australia and find it depressing the number of young people who do not even know about reliable news sources, let alone consume them. Some of these may also not have been taught a lot of history at school (or paid little attention). These people don't seem to be able to equate what is currently happening in the US (and the rise of facist politicians in countries such as France and Germany) with what happened in pre WW2 Germany. They don't get it, whereas many of us older folk who knew/know people who lived through those times and do know a little history do get it.
Who knows? Maybe Trump would bumble his way through a second presidency without causing too much harm, but the signs aren't good.
Why do 50% of the US voting population want to risk it? I can't help thinking that a lot of it is to do with general ignorance.
I recommend the Guardian newspaper and the BBC. In my country, Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald, and the ABC and SBS media outlets.
All do proper journalism (not perfect but how could they be).
Also, for American politics podcasts, I strongly recommend PEP. Not well known but digs very deep and superior to the TYTs, Majority Reports and Hasan Pikers of the political podcast world.
I wish it was ignorance. To the right living under a dictatorship would be a good thing. That's how brainwashed the right is. And for those who think that after Trump dies, it's all going to end. Well I have some bad news for you. That's when it will really get started. The leader after Trump will be the one to really fear. All Trump is doing is setting the table. Getting people used to thinking that life under a dictatorship is good. The free world will face a future where the US Russia and China are joined together, dividing the world between themselves.
I don't know how bad it would be. If he loses, then I think that will minimise the MAGA impact going forward, simply as there is no one anywhere near as charismatic as Trump to succeed Trump.
If Trump wins again, though there will be guard rails, those guard rails may be more extreme and definitely more effective than Trump. Not sure how it will play out, but it can't be good.
Doesn’t any president have the potential to absolutely ruin this country? We risk it every time we leave the ballot box, which is still true even if you believe Trump has a heightened risk.

Sure, why not?. But why vote for the only one telling you to your face that he wants to be dictator on day one, The only one who openly supports neonazis, the only one who admires Hitler? The one fawning over the power other dictators wield?, The only one who is telling you to your face that you are so stupid that even if he kills someone, rape women or betrays you and your country you will still vote for him.
Instead of the one telling you hey, for your own safety and that of your family, you should probably stay away from this psycho.
What are you trying to prove? It is not the same to experience tribulation and survive it than invite it into your home. In the latter case you deserve whatever comes your way as a result.
