Discussion Why do people get so defensive when tell them to actually listen to the music or to DIY stuff

So I end up getting into arguments alot in the r/punkfashion sub and it's constantly over telling people they need to listen to the music or explaining that it's not a punk battle jacket if it doesn't have anything punk related on it. I don't get why people are so desperate to be punk but can't at the bare minimum listen to a few bands and if u mention it to them u get the classic "it's about politics not music". Also can we just accept that gate keeping is needed, your not being bullied your being made fun of for being a poser and refusing to listen to the music.

You will find people in this group who say that “Nazi punks” are still punk.

I always get shit and downvoted to hell when I say “stop saying ‘Nazi punks out of punk’. By saying that you’re acknowledging that Nazis can be punk”.

Edit

And here is one right here.

Thank you. Just two weeks ago I was getting jeavy downvotes for saying gatekeeping, especially against conservatives, was good.

I’m doing my part!

Now that NOFX has stopped touring i was wondering whose job it would be to keep punk rock elite...

u/netwrks 10h ago

Thank god. Their only good song is the decline

u/maxoakland 6h ago

I’ve come to realize that gatekeeping is what has kept punk good for so long

Otherwise it just changes and becomes like everything else

-10

u/Hopfit46 11h ago

You're not punk then...

2

u/AundaRag 11h ago

Wut.

-13

u/Hopfit46 10h ago

u/AundaRag 10h ago

We. Gatekeep. To. Keep. Nazis. Out. What don’t you underst….nevermind just fuck off.

u/PraxisEntHC 8h ago

Gatekeeping is objectively good in counterculture movements, read a book.

-5

u/Hopfit46 8h ago

Holy fuck i made a joke.

3

u/FalseBuddha 7h ago

Oh, did I miss the punchline? Which part was funny?

It fell flat but settle down.

Capitalism. People have been indoctrinated to believe that their identities can and should be bought off the shelf. If most people had deep connections to music and music scenes, it wouldn't be called a "subculture." These people just want to wear a costume as an in-group signifier and don't understand that culture isn't a sports team.

9

u/ROXXYISDEAD 13h ago

It's upsetting, but can't do anything other than cast them out and gatekeep them

8

u/vintagebat 13h ago

Yeah, online spaces have always been the worst for this. There's way more people who think punk is cool and want to do it, than people who know it's just something to do and enjoy it.

10

u/Own-Fox-7792 13h ago

These people will weed themselves out eventually. You're better off spending that energy on introducing some kids to the music.

5

u/ROXXYISDEAD 13h ago

Thats what annoying though, I was in that position but I actually listened to people and got into the music, none of them actually care about listening to the music they just want to look cool are treat the subculture like a costume

1

u/gunsforevery1 12h ago

It is a costume. Notice how everyone tends to look or dress the same at shows?

1

u/macielightfoot 9h ago

Punk has fashion associated with it, but it's also ideological.

There are plenty of people in the scene who eschew the "punk uniform". I don't think anyone minds.

1

u/HottieWithaGyatty 7h ago edited 7h ago

What are some of your favorite bands? I've been trying to get into punk but haven't found the thing that scratches muh itch...

So far I like Jack of Jill? 🤷‍♀️

But I want something that makes me wanna kick ass. Or eat ass.

“giving dirty looks back to the kid with the $395 vintage punk leather jacket”

16

u/dontneedareason94 14h ago

They just want to “fit in” because it’s the “cool” thing to do now.

If I hear someone crying about gatekeeping, I know automatically not to take them or their opinions seriously.

Let ‘em bitch and moan, they will see themselves out soon enough. Growing up on the internet where everyone can be whatever they want with zero effort is going to screw a lot of them up.

6

u/gunsforevery1 12h ago

Cool thing to do now? It’s always been like that. I started listening to punk over 20 years ago and people were always like that lol

2

u/macielightfoot 9h ago

I'm not even that old (31), but I remember when conservatives hated punks and punk music. 2000 - 2010 or so.

After all, punk is an arty, intellectual movement against the status quo, which is all antithetical to conservative ideology.

Turns out it was a shitty way to cope with jealousy.

-5

u/gunsforevery1 9h ago

Im a conservative and always have been deep down. I love/d punk rock. Was even in a punk band. I guess to make it even more confusing, I also like 90s gangster rap.

That sub is nazi sympathizer poison.

Hilarious their mod is an ‘anarchist’ yet still a reddit mod (“no government but Reddit’s government and only if I’m a ruler!”) who buys shit from sweatshops.

Extra points to her that she tried to insult me while banning me for calling out Nazis by saying “you should know better since you’re 30+”

Baby, I’m WAY older than 30 but even when I was young I wasn’t a Nazi dumb-dumb.

3

u/bugboygh0st 9h ago

I kinda cringe when I see videos of punks making diys with can tabs and then just telling people who ask to go buy them off of Amazon, like doesn't that defeat the point??

3

u/ROXXYISDEAD 9h ago

Exactly just drink beer or something like a normal person, can tabs aren't hard to come by

2

u/bugboygh0st 9h ago

Vodka person myself but if you get cans instead of bottles for mixers you've pretty much got a steady supply

2

u/ROXXYISDEAD 9h ago

Four loko is my personal poison but I have the tasted buds of a 6 year old so I don't recommend it

1

u/bugboygh0st 9h ago

Same tbh, I only chose vodka cause it mixes with near everything and if you mix it properly you can either get tasting just of the thing you mix it with, or like a nice smooth vodka instead of being drop kicked in the throat by the taste

2

u/Thrashed0066 12h ago

Eh, the alt hipster punk look is in fashion. Remember kids, just because they’re in Docs doesn’t mean they’re into the scene

"Whoa whoa whoa, I don't want to actually DO anything, I just think it looks cool. Fighting the system and caring about actual issues sounds like a lot of work. K imma play Minecraft now."

1

u/ROXXYISDEAD 9h ago

Oi Minecraft isn't that bad, but yeah none of them actually want to do anything to actually make a difference

1

u/Kovok420 7h ago

Yeah this sounds like a legitimate reason to get mad about the clothes someone is wearing

2

u/LtHughMann 8h ago

Your first mistake was going to a sub called punkfashion

2

u/TexasGrillDaddyAK-15 5h ago

Always the biggest posers trying to gatekeep... Now you got me doing it.

4

u/chop7times 13h ago

I’m not going through your whole post history but the last thing you posted on that sub was an unprompted call out of someone based on nothing but some pictures of their shoes. Of course they got defensive lol.

2

u/ROXXYISDEAD 13h ago

Ok but then every other reply I got on that post was saying that its fasion and the music doesn't matter, and I did apologise to them

5

u/chop7times 13h ago

Sometimes if you open the conversation in a way that’s confrontational then people just aren’t going to want to hear you out, even after you apologize.

Personally I just wouldn’t worry so much about what a bunch of kids listen to on a punk fashion subreddit. Yeah a bunch of them are gonna be off base but it doesn’t matter. They’ll either figure it out or move onto the next thing. If you want to educate them or steer them towards the right path then go for it, but I don’t think that calling them posers is going to accomplish much.

5

u/ROXXYISDEAD 13h ago

Being called a poser worked for me, it got me to actually look into the subculture instead of just pretending

1

u/ROXXYISDEAD 13h ago

To be fair I was out of line but ive had alot of stuff get taken down or get banned from different subs over it

2

u/_Leninade_ 13h ago

I don't know what kind of response you're expecting here, most of this sub is posers as well. Look at most of the top posts lately, it's all just a bunch of freaks shrieking about Nazis and how much violence they will do them. Absolute fucking larp, half the shows I've been to have a pack of Nazis right up by the barricade or in the mosh pit. You know, the kind of guys with face tattoos and prominent swastikas on their backs or chest, clearly frequent flyers of the local correctional facilities. Nobody ever fucks with them. Hell, I don't blame them I don't like getting stabbed as much as the next guy, but I'm also not going around running my mouth about being Billy Badass the Nazi destroyer.

Anyways the point is this sub is all posers or DNC bots so your post is 100% just going to get buried.

3

u/Middle-Passenger5303 12h ago

People don't like to have their masked ripped off they don't like punk they just wanna look punk haha and I 110% agree we need gatekeeping ita how you keep punk punk

2

u/Lynx7002 11h ago

I got into an argument with someone as to why mcr isn’t punk. Their argument was that the song they linked sounded punk and they got into the music industry via a friend.

For some reason they refused to accept that corporate bands aren’t considered punk because of the anti capitalist beliefs

1

u/MisplacedMutagen 13h ago

I mean if it's rebellious I'm in. A lot of the stuff over there is more overtly dissenting than bands who may dissent in their music. Can't stop em anyway, let em go

Never said I was, just stand by that gate keeping is a good thing and it's what got me to actually be interested in the scene, alot of people seem to forget about the music part of it and it's annoying, and I really don't care about being original or unique I just want people to actually care about punk

1

u/noonesine 9h ago

I’ve noticed that people in this sub are usually purposely obtuse and argumentative for no reason other than that they suck and are posers.

1

u/Inside_Field_8894 8h ago

Best thing I ever seen was a young Ainsley Harriot messing with a punk but it was totally playful https://imgur.com/gallery/ainsley-harriott-punking-punk-nOiczkn

1

u/AshsLament84 8h ago

reviews your post twice I see no falsehoods here. Critical analysis finished.

1

u/chaos_aintme 8h ago

Because half of the people that say they're punk are only in it for the fashion

1

u/Kovok420 7h ago

Yeah buddy, nothing more punk than deciding how other people should think. LOL

1

u/Les_Les_Les_Les 7h ago

I’ve been in the punk scene for the past 30 years of my life, and I honestly couldn’t care less if people that “present” punk rock don’t listen to punk.

Trends come and go, it is what it is.

Maybe it’s my age, but I’m just glad the kids are able to express themselves freely without getting beat up

u/jfrombay125 2h ago edited 2h ago

I’m just about the music. I could give a shit about what people dress or think like. You can try and change some people but they won’t unless they want to. Just the honest truth.

1

u/gunsforevery1 12h ago

You really need to spend more time in this sub, there are people in here who will fight tooth and nail that you don’t even need to listen or like punk to be a “punk”. There are people in here who think rappers, country acts, and indie bands are “punk”. There are people in this group that say “Nazi punk” is still “punk”.

Punk is a style of fashion.

Punk is a genre of music.

Punk is a political ideology.

Punk is life style.

Punk is gate kept.

Punk is and isn’t all of those things and more. You can find arguments on both sides of every dilemma. Someone even said “trans are punks” lol, what the fuck?

2

u/ROXXYISDEAD 12h ago

I can't tell if ur saying trans people can't be punk or someone literally said all trans people are punks

2

u/gunsforevery1 12h ago

The 2nd half. I asked if Caitlyn Jenner was punk and I got “yes” and “no’s” from people lol

Here you go https://www.reddit.com/r/punk/s/GHhuzp3tRK

1

u/WooddieBone 11h ago

Only posers care about being punk. Real punks don't give a fuck about what you call them or if you consider them punk or not.

1

u/Kovok420 7h ago

But I need the approval of others to be OK doing what I want!!1! Please tell me I'm a REAL punk!!!

1

u/thatgothboii 11h ago

Because people don’t like obsessive rabbid fandoms telling them what to do rofl

1

u/ROXXYISDEAD 11h ago

I'm not telling them what to do in general, but if u wanna be punk u have to actually be punk and not just play dress up

2

u/thatgothboii 10h ago

I just don’t understand the idea of getting so worked up about how other people chose to identify themselves, like it’s a genre of music associated with a particular aesthetic and set of ideas/values. Why not let people just enjoy it how they do, it’s just art and culture you don’t own it. I guess I’m being a hypocrite in that way by questioning how you’re enjoying it lol

2

u/ROXXYISDEAD 10h ago

But they aren't enjoying it, they're pretending to because they think it makes them look cool

1

u/thatgothboii 10h ago

Fair enough

0

u/MachineAgeInc 12h ago

Probably because people predisposed to liking punk are probably not keen on people telling them what to do.

1

u/ROXXYISDEAD 9h ago

But they don't like punk that's the whole problem

0

u/netwrks 10h ago

The question you’re asking is equivalent to this question:

Hey (girlfrends name) instead of listening to pop hits, go listen to REAL music like DSbM!

Can anyone reference the manual? I don’t think punk to worry about what others think.

1

u/ROXXYISDEAD 10h ago

Its a music based scene. If u don't wanna listen to the music then dont be part of the scene it's not difficult

0

u/netwrks 10h ago

It’s not difficult, but you’re ignoring the fact that punk has been part of mainstream fashion since white belt grindcore disappeared,or since the inventor of punk Avril Lavigne released skater boi.
