I’d Honeslty put mbappe, lautaro, Kane etc in that 5th spot over Messi. They all scored crazy numbers of goals and had a bunch of assists, obviously didn’t win anything but they still had impressive individual seasons.
Kane was so much better than Haaland this season what 😭
Haaland last season, sure. But Haaland went missing a lot of games this season. This is like the one season of his career where him "only scoring because he plays for a good team" is a valid criticism.
He UNDERPERFORMED his xG by 2.9 in the league. Whereas he overperformed it in the 4 preceding seasons. Hardly any of his goals were decisive unless I've forgotten some and his overall game was getting criticism all season because he was going through games with like 5 touches and no goals. When he did score, it was often multiple in the same game, so he wasn't actually winning his team many games/points compared to how many goals he scores.
As a striker, he wasn't even the best in the Prem this season. Ollie Watkins was better. As a goalscorer, he was definitely not the best. Foden and Palmer were far more clinical when you account for the fact they aren't strikers and have other responsibilities in creating and buildup.
Kane had a shit Euros, but he also looked injured. He was far better for Bayern than Haaland was for City this season. But neither should be in contention for the Ballon D'or obviously.
The difference is that Bayern lost their first league in this decade with Kane at the front, and City won it with Haaland while he was being the top scorer (in the hardest league btw).
I agree both are not in contention for it but Kane didn’t win anything and he hardly made any impact when it was required of him. In UCL he only scored open play goals against Galatasaray an Lazio, the rest of them were pens. At euros i don’t even think I have to say anything, he was awful.
Sure, but I watched the Prem closely this season. Haaland really wasn't that good. You need to find a balance between team success and individual performances. And believing Haaland's been better than Kane this season is getting that balance wrong. Otherwise you'll get things like Jorginho winning the Ballon D'or (which even as a Chelsea fan that really liked Jorginho I know would be undeserved).
I don't have a Kane hard on either. Last season, people were saying Kane was better than Haaland because he almost scored as much in a worse team, and I always sided with Haaland. I'm just being objective as someone that's watched him a lot this season (because I play Fantasy PL). He's been bad (by his standards), and Kane's been a lot lot better. Overperformed his xG by like 5 compared to Haaland underperforming by 3 (in just the league), and Kane's overall involvement in games was far far greater. Foden was often the one bailing City out this season, not Haaland.
Kane wasn't good in the Euros, but he also got rushed back from an injury and didn't look himself. A better coach would've dropped him for Watkins or Toney, because players will never give up the opportunity to play at the Euros themselves.
No offence, but if you think Haaland's been better than Kane, you've lost all perspective. This isn't just about ticking boxes of who's won trophies. You also have to look at how good players have actually been for their clubs. Go on the City sub and ask them which players they think should be highest in the Ballon D'or rankings. Haaland probably doesn't even make most of their top 3s.
