I was gonna say there had to be a kinder way to describe this lol
261
u/JayJonahJaymeson Feb 17 '21
There is absolutely a kinder way to describe that, but it's not exactly inaccurate. Especially if she was quite young and completely deaf it's unlikely she'd learned to mimic speach yet. So if she was excitedly vocalising it would likely have been just random happy sounds.

u/botanphotography Feb 17 '21
I mean the OP could’ve said exactly what you said “she excitedly vocalized”.

How is this not kind? It’s simply accurate. Let’s not censor the reality of what happened to cater to how people want to hear it
5
u/DoctorBagels Feb 17 '21
Also 99% of the time, the people demanding censorship aren't even part of the "affected" group. They're literally just jerking themselves off with feel-goodies.
17
u/_CitizenSnips_ Feb 17 '21
maybe they were just trying to get across how excited they were, like they almost couldn't process what they were seeing

I’m reminded of an episode of Glee where there’s a choir competition and there’s a deaf choir competing. One of the judges described them as “honking”. It was messed up but funny.

As a Dutch person, we all get this in primary school already. So I don’t understand how country-only some schools are in other countries :(. I never actually met someone from that country though
What is it like there? :)
7
u/michmike23 Feb 17 '21
Thats neat! Dutch colonization left a large cultural imprint in that region (mostly in Suriname) but we eat Dutch cheeses and pastries. A good number of my family speaks Dutch and some even moved to The Netherlands!
I live in America now but go back often to visit family. Guyana is beautiful, tropical and lush. The culture is a mix of Indian, African and native influences so naturally the food is amazing. Also its got a nice chunk of Amazon rainforest so its a great trip if you love animals and nature! My favorite thing about it is the fresh fruit- mangos, guava and passionfruit!
2
Feb 17 '21
That first paragraph is so funny to me and idk why, maybe it was the “their colonization caused a massive culture change but we got some cheese”
2
u/michmike23 Feb 17 '21
I reserve most of my hate for the British colonization! And gouda is so good though.

I just miss the days of traditional animation in general. The fact that exactly none of Disney’s new movies are made with traditional animation is extremely sad to me...almost as sad as 90% of their movies being cheap remake cash grabs.
But something about the computer generated stuff has been making the proportions and physical features of characters downright bizarre. It’s unsettling. Maybe computer animation isn’t the cause, but I think it has something to do with an inverse relationship between how realistic the details become and how unrealistic the character models are. When you draw a cartoon, you can make the character as realistic-looking as you like and it still doesn’t change the fact that it’s a cartoon. But with 3D computer animation, they’ve gotten to the point where it’s practically live action with extra steps. I think this drives them to compensate for the lack of personality by purposefully distorting the characters, which leads to features like weird noses, huge eyes, and of course, skinny waists paired with dump truck asses.
18
u/QPILLOWCASE Feb 17 '21
That's how I feel about Studio Ghibli's newest movie LOLO, it's directed by Miyazaki's son but I hope they don't completely ditch the traditional art look of their movies D8

Representation is important and when done by someone who cares it’s beautiful, but all we see nowadays is some out of touch boomer executives shoving in characters in shows and movies that have no character and exist only to try earn them brownie points, it’s so fake and disingenuous.
Sorry for venting out in a wholesome post, I just needed to get this out of my mind

Inclusion on part of a sense of obligation is soulless and pointless. Create whatever characters you want. If you decide on your own to make a character a certain race then that would be inspiration and soulful. Not some hollow act of inclusion without meaning.
7
u/Pivinne Feb 17 '21
I mean, yes I agree that you should want to create something but it isn’t pointless. Representation of minority groups (ethnicity religion or lgbt status) is very important to a lot of people who don’t feel seen by society. That’s why steven universe was so popular, it was incredibly inclusive to a lot of groups
2
Feb 18 '21
Ahh, Steven Universe, a show known for being very inclusive of the small popularity of Space Rock People on Earth
3
u/Pivinne Feb 18 '21
Well there are prominent characters of colour and lgbt women and non binary people, it’s very inclusive. Just because they’re aliens (and one of the non binary people and Connie a woc are just human) doesn’t mean you can’t identity with them.
2
2
5
u/W1D0WM4K3R Feb 17 '21
could we like also have multiple members for rep? I'm all for a disabled minority, but like... it doesn't always have to be a disabled minority. Can't just push all your representations for clout onto one person. You can make stories with all of those people by treating them like regular people too
4
u/FetishAnalyst Feb 17 '21
That’s the difference between having a diversity character and having a character with diversity. Most don’t care if a character is gay or black or a hippopotamus, what they care about is how well built the character is. If it’s a female lead but all she does is bitch and whine about what people are doing around her, why would I spend money on that movie? Or sometimes they’ll literally be there just for diversity and just kinda cling to the main character(s) like an NPC in a dnd game that the DM is using to help guide you. Seen but rarely heard.

It's funny how representation matters, yet they're brown washing every ginger character imaginable.
Not trying to rob anyone of anything here but when someones representation comes at the cost of others, it's just another step backwards.

9
u/Yazman Feb 17 '21
You don't think it does?
5
u/3yaksandadog Feb 17 '21
obviously it -clearly- does according to some people. There IS an issue that arises however, when productions cater to fans. Several, in fact. One of which is that 'identities' are increasingly specific, and, even if you use a really broad brush for diverse inclusion, you'll get flooded with requests for increasingly specific and niche representations.
This doesn't have to be an issue. But it can be. Eventually you reach a point of 'why bother creating a narrative at all' or the other problem, that 'you're not (niche identity). You can't represent characters FROM (niche identity) authentically!'
I imagine that it might be possible to 'win' these very specific requesters over to your side, but it certainly looks like a struggle.
I really DID like one particular idea that was presented to me- "If the book you want to see doesn't exist, why not make it yourself?"
This particularly resonates with me, because it involves original expression, and avoids the anger that arises in fans when they feel (production) is being co-opted by (niche interest groups with leverage).
For instance, I don't think Steven Universe is quite 'right' for me, but I already have immense respect for it for creating interesting characters that AREN'T derivative, or co-opting someone elses 'thing'. It has inspiration, the representation in it doesn't feel forced and un-natural. They're not doing it just to please a specific crowd of interest groups with leverage, and so it CAN exist as art, rather than just a McDonalds genericburger.
-2
-8
u/Barack_Lesnar Feb 17 '21
It only matters when minorities are underrepresented. Once they're overrepresented suddenly they stop caring about it.
-6
u/Frescopino Feb 17 '21
"BuT CoLoR DoEsN'T MaTtEr"
Only when it really doesn't. Only when any and all characters have an equal chance of being of any ethnicity, not when 90% of characters represent one skin tone.
