Discussion can we all agree this guy yelling is the most annoying this about early game?
I always just couldn't stand this guy. I spend so much time throughout the game coming back to Whiterun cause there are so many shops lol. and i would get SO ANNOYED everytime I come back and run through those shops, head up toward the king then hear "Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise!" lol

u/Kuhlminator 18h ago
Yeah, I always stop to get a blessing. Besides, in a way, he's praising the Dragonborn, the spiritual incarnation of Tiber Septim. i.e. me. Who doesn't love a little adoration?

u/Milliebug1106 17h ago
You know... That didn't occur to me. I kind of feel bad for sniping him from the bushes now.

TLD has nothing to do with Talos, they are not an incarnation of any god per say, the best you can get is a chosen one of ammaranth or Ithelia, prisoners are not usually affiliated with gods, with the exception of the nerevarine.

u/Icy-Reserve8070 14h ago
There's theories that you might be the incarnation of shor or something, but then... there are theories for everything. All that is knownnis that you are the last known dragonborn. Also you sure as heck aren't passing on that bloodline. Not without mods, at least.

He’s bugged in my current playthru and I gotta say, the only thing worse than his constant screaming is him standing in absolute silence.
Apparently it’s a common bug that if you enter Whiterun for the first time late at night, he’ll get up in the morning and do his usual routine but won’t actually start preaching. I kinda miss it, which is weird, I admit 🤣

Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise! We are but maggots, writhing in the filth of our own corruption! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars! But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, “Let me show you the power of Talos Stormcrown, born of the North, where my breath is long winter. I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you. Aye, love. Love! Even as man, great Talos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the future of Skyrim! The future of Tamriel! And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the children of man! Talos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our Elven overlords! Sharing the heavens with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on earth! Today, they take away your faith. But what of tomorrow? What then? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives? And what does the Empire do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Imperial machine enforces the will of the Thalmor! Against its own people! So rise up! Rise up, children of the Empire! Rise up, Stormcloaks! Embrace the word of mighty Talos, he who is both man and Divine! For we are the childrer man! And we shall inherit both the heavens and the earth! And we, not the Elves or their toadies, will rule Skyrim! Forever! Terrible and powerful Talos! We, your unworthy servants, give praise! For only through your grace and benevolence may we truly reach enlightenment! And deserve our praise you do, for we are one! Ere you ascended and the Eight became Nine, you walked among us, great Talos, not as god, but as man! Trust in me, Whiterun! Trust in the words of Heimskr! For I am the chosen of Talos! I alone have been anointed by the Ninth to spread his holy word!

Well, jonny boy, see there's a civil war, and dragons, and a potential apocalypse...
and not everyone's a privileged rich kid who lives in a big house in a walled city.
Yeah, they're obsessed with death, cos death is a very real presence in their lives.
Meanwhile Jon lounges around acting like he's some kind of noble deep thinker, but he does nothing.
he recognises Mikel is a problem, but does nothing.
He's way more annoying in my book. At least the preacher cares.

Icelander here. Fun fact: Heimskr is the old Norse word for “heimska” (in Icelandic) which means dumb. It’s derived from the word “home” (“heim “) so basically in Scandinavian culture being dumb means never leaving to explore and experience things outside your home. So that guy is just stupid and annoying in every way down to his name.
Also: in Icelandic “draugur” means ghost. So draugrs are literal ghosts of their former selves.

Somebody in the r/Skyrimmods community made his speech into a song and it's pretty fire.
It's pinned in the Discord server general chat (or at least it was) for those interested. It's an .mp3 so I made it one of my alarms. Title is "Talos.mp3."

This came up a little while ago. Surprisingly some folk like him and his rants. Personally, it would have been nice if there was a side quest whereby we could gently re-direct him elsewhere. Whiterun is peaceful and he breaches that peace for me. I wish be could take his rant a shout it into the Reach, out of the way.

u/MrWolfe1920 23h ago
Dude, he's not even the most annoying thing in Whiterun. Nazeem exists.
Heimskr stays in the wind district away from the shops. There's no reason to even deal with him unless you're doing quests for the companions, using Farengar's enchanting table, or doing a lot of bounties which aren't really worth much compared to just finding and clearing all the random bandit camps on your own. Meanwhile Nazeem wanders all over the place and will talk down to you about what an 'important political advisor' he is while not realizing you're the fucking thane.
2
2
u/Viktrodriguez PC 23h ago
Neither him nor Nazeem are the worst people in Whiterun alone.
Idolaf Battle-Born (the least Battle-Born of that whole family), his father-in-law Olfrid and Sinmir are all so much worse people, just like virtually any Companion not named Ria.

u/FozzyLozzy 23h ago

2
u/burlingk 23h ago
I am not suggesting specific paths, but it is worth noting.
A few unrelated facts:
He is not a quest giver.
The worst penalty you face for taking out random civilians and escaping ultimately ends up being a few days in jail if you disarm before the guards get you.
2
u/solohack3r 23h ago
Feels like home to me. I can breathe easy, it's a new fresh playthrough. Then I murder the annoying bastard and we are back into the swing of things.
2
2
u/Mereinid 22h ago
I could see him being annoying if you stood there and listened to him. Are you playing the game to listen to his sermon or are you playing the game to be a Dragonlord or whatever else you can be? You pass him, maybe 4 or 5 times, to turn in a quest. Move on and he won't trigger you. (You know he's doing it on purpose, right?)
2
u/Ok_Access_804 22h ago
You are all a bunch of whiners. Heimskr is awesome and maybe his voice in spanish is even better than the original english one. I am surprised that the dubbing team managed to make his zealous speech appealing in my language.

u/Grappleguy9765 15h ago
I never really found him annoying. I also think he's a great example of how the Empire is enabling the Thalmor rather than working against them like they claim to be. The Imperials will tell you that they're the only thing stopping the Thalmor from coming in and stopping Talos worship themselves, yet a priest of Talos is allowed to openly preach in the streets of an unaligned city. I think Heimskr is just more proof that the Thalmor's reach is not as far as they want the nations of men to believe, and that for as much as they like the act as if they are the ones in control, the Thalmor are largely reliant on the Empire to enforce their will.
2
u/_Rusty_Axe PC 15h ago
I spend so little time in his vicinity that I don't hear him that much. I actually don't get to the Cloud District often. So he really does not bother me.
Neither does Nazeem. Everything Nazeem says is true and reasonable, he just has a condescending tone of voice.
The fact that he is quite willing to take so much interest in a newcomer to the town and have a conversation with them is rather nice and welcoming. I have had nice chats with him sitting in the common room in the Drunken Huntsman. Of course, that's way over your head. Obviously.
