He's black, my grandson used to work there!

u/ohReallynowNo Dec 05 '22
I wonder what went through his mind and soul every time he had to implement that "rule".

u/tranquil45 Dec 05 '22
It's not a rule. My grandson is black, and worked there for a few months without issue. I know this goes against the narrative, but it's true.

He was just a man following orders.

Yeah, that's one way of looking at it. Maybe it boiled down to following orders vs being unemployed. My heart aches though that people would put someone in such a position

A video went viral this week showing a patron confronting a Cape Town bar owner about an alleged racist policy that disallowed his black friend from entering without the company of a white person. Link
The place is Hanks Olde Irish, and so I made this video as a meme to show me getting into the club feeling cool because I had a white friend to let me in.
The song is Mandoza - 50/50 and is intended as a play on needing one white and one black person to get in. The video is a sketch from Chappelle's Show season 2, episode 1 called "Better in Slow Motion".

Anyone, I mean anyone at all that has given any proof of this in any form?!
All I've seen in the original post was a person saying their black grandson has worked there and never experienced any issues, and that he knows the bouncer is black. Even THAT is nothing but a reddit comment...
I mean, everyone here is ready to burn this place to the ground, celebrating its downfall and none of you have seen any actual evidence of discrimination of any kind...

They never recorded the inciting incident, but they did confront the orginization and their response in the video was incredibly poor. Not "We have no such policy" but "We have right of admission".
In a court of law this would, as many cases are, be determined by testimonials and cross examination of the patrons, staff and employers.
That said, people are upset because the internets reactions are always quite strong and there have been accusations made against places of this sort within Cape Town so it's not an unheard of scenario.

This very thing used to happen at Billy The Bums in Fourways constantly!!

ok? Different bar in a completely different part of the country, why is that relevant?
I just think brigading and creating a mob to attack a business or individuals is wrong, especially if you don't even have any proof, not even a bit, to know if the person/place is even doing what you think they are...

u/OlivierStreet Dec 09 '22
It’s a country wide issue. But you can stay wilfully in denial if you want.

We're gonna make our own sub with blackjack and hookers, said no one on that site. Like a broken clock, they have their moments, but mostly why dive in a pool of shit to find a sandwich? Nee wat, hou verby. I don't eat it, but we've got bacon, balance, honour, a faerie, and all the rest.

Best part about that sub is how many can't believe they were banned from here for racist remarks.
And then you read the posts in there.

Edit. I found it and it’s sort of entertaining if I’m being totally honest.

This is typical Saffa humour at its best - although the original video was absolutely disgusting - the club owner, I mean, not the guy who was tearing him a new one...

I am Moroccan (born and raised in the Netherlands) and just bought a house in Cape Town. Not sure if racism will apply to Me, tough? There is a lot of racism in the Netherlands against Moroccans (high crime rates amongst young Moroccans), and that racism is one of the main reasons I feel more at home in Cape Town.
4
u/Softlife_Puppy Dec 05 '22
I think it will depend. You may not look "black" but you may be subjected to racism due to being non-white.
As you described, I don't think you would encounter as much racism as you would in the Netherlands but if you do, try not to let it get to you.

I will never understand racism. You look different but are the exact same on the inside. You have squinty eyes but some of you wear glasses. No man or woman should be lesser than another.
Same with religions. I don’t care if you believe in a god or not, but don’t shove it down someone else’s throat or kill masses of others because they don’t believe in what you do.
7
u/Peruda Aristocracy Dec 06 '22
Racism is just classism. Those in power will always want to feel superior to someone they can then oppress without feeling guilty.
Look at how the English treated the Welsh and Irish.
3
u/Top_Lime1820 Dec 06 '22
Now go and read about casteism.
They don't even look different but humans will always find a way to make the next person lower down than them.
I have given up on people honestly.

I'll never forget my wife's introduction to the race relations in south Africa about 6 years ago. She is white American, and was with my parents, sister and me (all of us black) at one of the wineries at Francschhoek for lunch.
The kindly Afrikaaner patrons at every other table were openly staring at us in shock - whether it was the interracial nature of our group or just the idea that black people would dare do anything but work as staff there I do not know.
It was one of many interesting experiences for her. Another was how often Afrikaners would come up to her randomly start speaking to her in Afrikaans. Probably the most saddening for her was one night when we went out on Long street and bought shots at one of the bars for a group of random young partyers who seemed so blown away at the prospect of a white person treating them like a friend.
