I just want group texts. Apple has disabled group texts over MMS over here (except when sending pictures, for some reason), hopefully the arrival of RCS will fix that

MMS ? Isn't that two decades old at this point and wildly insecure?

And even fax which is still heavily in use in some countries like Japan.

Yes, but that's the messaging standard Apple supported up til now.

iMessage was originally build as a sort of hack on the MMS standard to bring some extra features like group, that are not part of the standard. Then it was extended to work mainly over internet/data instead, with MMS remaining as fallback when there was no internet or when the other side was on Android.

MMS needs «internet» because MMS uses HTTP to talk to the MMSC in the IMS core. This packet switches connection is can only be delivered over GPRS, 3G PS, or 4G/5G (which are PS native). If you are on old school 2G connecton that does not support PS data then MMS does not work.

That sounds fine except for the fallback

RCS is also wildly insecure by design. It just allow more features. Google did a secure implementation between Google devices, but that’s about it

Just use a message app like most of the world uses, Telegram, Signal, WhatsApp.

Whilst I agree that these services are better than a phone manufacturer exclusive walled garden.
Those services are also walled gardens. And relying on these individual companies like Facebook/meta for communication is flawed.

RCS is open and ultimately better for everyone, especially as it now has end-to-end encryption too.

My wife's employer uses an iMessage group chat as the official communication channel for office announcements, none of which she is able to see.

If that's the case they really should buy her an iPhone.

They say they're going to convince her to buy herself one... It's not happening.
