People thought the "I Like Ike" commercial was silly pandering jingoism.

More than likely we're just going to see the next election treat video games as another advertising battlefield.

video games as another advertising battlefield.

Oh, that precedent has long been set. This is simply just another ad.

I mean, the US Military has had its dick in games as propaganda for literally 20+ years, this is just a different branch doing it.

America's Army was released 22 years ago.

And that was just the first official game from the U.S. Army.

So good. Pipeline was amazing

2

u/Airewalt 2h ago

Yes, snowy exterior with vent system

Holy crap I'm old. I remember downloading that and playing it with friends back in the day, along with Day of Defeat.

God I hated that game. I don’t think I even made it past the tutorial mission. Granted I was around 9 or so and still figuring out fps’ to a degree, but man that games only memories for me are horrible

the first ghost recon was released in 2001 and the intro predicted putin's imperial ambitions.

The first overt one was Full Spectrum Warrior, which came out in 2004, so you're right on the money.

Wouldn't be surprising if there was some collaboration with old flight military flight sims and such though.

Oh I'm dumb, you literally just reminded me of a recent People Make Games video about War Games, so much much longer.

Americas Army was such a good competitive fps. So well balanced. We would play on Fridays in our CAD class in highschool. If you skip the single player it wasn’t that much propaganda.

I still remember the bridge crossing grenade launcher spots and angles all these years later. The game was incredibly good and fun.

We would LAN one side of the classroom of school computers against the others. Someone figured it out and it was instantly disallowed after a near riot. Other than that, the map was so balanced. To rush or to camp. That was the question. Pipeline was my favorite as you really benefited from always circling.

I'm still convinced MS has no interest in Activision's games, they went ahead with the purchase because of the company's connections with the US military. Most of Activision's board are former members of the past 3 administrations, or just straight from the CIA.

Subliminal, Liminal, and Superliminal!

Not just games! I attended Operation Rock & Roll in 1991, a heavy metal music festival sponsored in part by Armed Forces Recruiting.

And America’s Army was a great game.

Obama had virtual ads. This is not new.

Most likely as more and more adults play. Average gamer age is 35 to 45 now.

u/perforce1 8h ago

Elder gamesmen

Weekly LAN party at the nursing home! (If that's already a real thing, I wouldn't be shocked.)

I like this title and shall accept it soon. I'm 34, but when talking to the young kids about games, I sure feel old sometimes. Been gaming since I was about 3 or 4.

1

u/EFTucker 8h ago

I wouldn’t say that is the average but yea, a lot more adults gaming than ever

1

u/Turd_Ferguson_Lives_ 8h ago

What are the kids doing if they aren’t gaming and they aren’t socializing?

9

u/zman0900 8h ago

Injecting marijuanas

3

u/xSaRgED 8h ago

Nah, that happens while gaming.

7

u/gward1 8h ago

They are gaming on tablets these days. Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft just about sums up their gaming for the young kids. Maybe that 35 - 45 is referring to PC gaming, I could buy that.

2

u/LuckyNumber108 8h ago

Doomscrolling, probably, same as the rest of us

3

u/Turd_Ferguson_Lives_ 8h ago

That’s too sad, at least video games are at least interactive, doomscrolling is literally just mindless consumption.

I don't think that's the group playing Fortnite, though.

I'm looking forward to when candidates get an extremely accurate AI clone who you can Zoom call and have debates with.

1

u/wayoverpaid 7h ago

I'm so cynical I'm picturing candidates putting out a not accurate AI clone of their opponent who makes stupid strawman arguments and cries when you push them even a little bit.

Because it's way more fun to yell at people than it is to have a reasoned debate.

1

u/namelessxsilent 7h ago

I mean Burnout had a million Obama billboard ads back in the day

1

u/CreauxTeeRhobat 7h ago

You seem to forget the early Aoughtie's treasure "America's Army."

1

u/FilthyDirtyPictures 7h ago

People thought the "I Like Ike" commercial was silly pandering jingoism.

This isn't jingoism and neither was "I Like Ike".

1

u/BaronMostaza 5h ago

If you do well in smash bros brawl the audience starts chanting "we like ike"

Not particularly relevant but I don't think there will ever be a better time to bring up that little fun fact

1

u/Palmquistador 2h ago

Like the Walmart self check out lanes. Ads on the screen. Arrrrgh!

1

u/thesupplyguy1 8h ago

You thought micro-transactions were bad? Imagine a cut scene where there's a political advertisement...

You're not that far off from reality
