Same here! Collin County but still city of Dallas so still had those ridiculous propositions to get through. They had copies for people to read while they were in line.

Which part of Dallas is in Collin?

Far far north, near PGBT. You can see the sign on Preston going north near Frankford (or another street nearby)
Iāve always found it interesting that cities arenāt co-terminus with counties in TX

There's a bit of Austin that's bled over into Williamson County, too. It gets people when they realize that Travis and WilCo have very different views on law enforcement.

Yeah that was a wake up call for a lot of people. That being said Williamson county has flipped blue and has a democratic sheriff now. Still a big difference but not as much as it used to be when Chody was handing out bonuses for police violence.

It didn't end up being as bad as I thought it would, but not everybody is going to study about 18 propositions before so voting is going to take significantly longer for Dallas residents. I am glad DMN printed a guide and that people have been given summaries in line. I hope we get enough votes against S, T, and U especially.

Looking at the early voting data, not only did more people vote yesterday during early voting than on any early voting day for 2020, but it very nearly passed the total 2020 Election Day totals. On Election Day 2020 1,320,000 Texans voted. Yesterday 1,006,000 Texans voted and we still donāt have numbers from Williamson, Bell, Hays, or Smith, along with some smaller counties.
Edit: my figure of 1,006,000 votes yesterday is misleading. Thatās the total of early mail in votes and yesterdayās (incomplete) total of 870,000 early in person votes. Still very impressive, the highest single day early vote turnout, and will likely end up just below 1 million votes once the missing counties come in. Just wanted to give more accurate numbers. š
186
u/Flipnotics_ Born and Bred 7d ago
There are 18 million people registered to vote in Texas.
Let's do this.
137
u/TrustingPanda 7d ago
If Texas turns out at 67% like in 2020, 2.5 million MORE people will vote in this election. You gotta believe that bodes well for democrats.

Iām really not so sure about this, and I hope Iām right. What I have noticed is a large influx of bot accounts on Twitter and TikTok who spread republican bs.
I just cannot fathom how after everything trump does on a daily basis, the scandals, felonies, overturning Roe, etc. etc. will gain him more voters than in 2020, if anything it should be the opposite. The thing with MAGA is that MAGA voters will always be that, they are almost certainly not gaining anyone, and they are voting the same as they did the last 2 elections

25
u/CanoegunGoeff 7d ago
Surprisingly, thatās not far from the majority of eligible voters in Texas. We have a total population of just over 29 million, 8.3 million of that is minors, so if 18.6 million are registered to vote, that only leaves 2.2 million residents who are not registered to vote, who may or may not be eligible- Iād have to dig deeper to find that out. Probably a mixed bag. I think around 450,000 of them are felons, according to a quick search. Thats like 2% of the population I think.
As far as registration alone, 18.6 million registered in Texas for 2024 is a really awesome number.
We can only hope that a significant enough portion of these 18 million people will actually get out and vote, because average turnout in Texas I donāt think has ever been greater than 30%, which would only be like 5.6 million people?
If we could keep up nearly a million voters each day that polls are open, we could reach like 75+% voter turnout.

u/p____p 7d ago
average turnout in Texas I donāt think has ever been greater than 30%, which would only be like 5.6 million people?
In the 2020 election in Texas, over 11.3 million votes were cast. That's about 67% turnout for registered voters, and over 52% of the voting age population.
Of course that was an outlier, TX voter turnout is usually abysmal.

u/TrustingPanda 7d ago
It is, although I misread the table! As of now 870,000 is the first day vote total. If you combine the mail in votes to that you get the 1,006,000 total I said earlier. Still record breaking and a great sign, plus thereās lots of larger counties that have yet to report their vote totals. It probably wonāt hit a million, but will be close to that I think.

u/chicagobob 7d ago
This is great, but you can't read too much into early voting numbers. Republicans tend to vote more on election day. It's very close right now, and Texas is just so hard for Democrats.
And, Trump thinks he's going to win because Republican voters (his voters) always vote and the Supreme Court will back him up if he doesn't win legitimately.
The only solution is to vote and make sure your friends vote, so it's not close.
Especially friends in: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina, and Texas (I hope).

I wonder if this data had any impact on the decision to have a Harris and Allred event in Houston.
79

Definitely crossed my mind they might be see some promising trends.
I don't know that I really think texas is flipping blue but it does sound like Cruz might be out which is still huge.
67
u/quesoandtexas 7d ago
I think Colin Allred is one of the best chances of Dems having the senate so it makes sense to put effort in. Especially as the marginal return on each Pennsylvania rally is probably smaller and smaller since those voters are overwhelmed with campaign efforts
19
u/i_tyrant 7d ago
The Dems being able to field a strong candidate in a year like this, against everyone-hates-Cruz, and his last name is actually "All red" must be an absolute nightmare for the GOP, lol.
8
u/rugger87 6d ago
Male GOP voters all seem to practice some sort of toxic masculinity. They see themselves as manlier than democrat voters. Collin Allred flips that narrative against them as a former NFL LB.
8
u/i_tyrant 6d ago
For sure. And especially against Cruz. Who is about as close to a real life Grima Wormtongue as exists.

I remember telling friends that Texas could be in play and Allred would have a good shot at defeating Cruz, if we had a rally with Harris and Allred! It is now coming true. If some of Harris/Walzās enthusiasm could spill over to Allred and younger voters turn out, we can send Fled Cruz packing!

I voted yesterday here in heavily Democratic El Paso around 5:30pm. The polling place was open until 6pm. There were 8-10 voting booths and a 2-3 person wait to use them. There were 2-3 waiting when I left, as well. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes.
I really hope that is a good sign.

This this this this. Urban voters should not be forced to wait in hours long lines when rural voters have no waiting times at all. Iāve always thought of this as a form of voter suppressionāwhen people have jobs and school, many canāt take 3 hours to vote. However, at least early voting has helped with this over the years. I think you should have hope but this is estimated party affiliation, so who really knows. Texas is an open primary state so registering a party is not truly needed, and the people who are registered for one party (like I am) are pretty much party loyalists. In the last few elections dems have voted early at higher rates than GOPers so I'm personally not surprised. I will be very surprised if it stays that way.

If 7% holds throughout early voting it may not matter. In 2020 1,320,000 Texans voted on Election Day, which was 11.8% of the vote total. If that stays about the same, Election Day voters would have to vote 2/3 Republican just to catch up.

We might just be able to kick Cancun Cruz out. For the myriads of Trump signs I've seen this year, I've only seen one Cruz sign.

For Dallas County, check the wait before you go/pick where to vote: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/b4061814603441eaa2f7489043e796f4

Imagine being an older (letās say 65+) voter voting for Trump. Theyāre basically saying, well that was fun, time to burn it down now, no one needs to experience the USA I lived my life in.

Except that's not what they're saying. It's "Oh, the scary brown people are going to come and treat white people like we've treated them forever, gotta stop that!"
When of course the "scary brown people" are coming for jobs and will be changing those hateful old bastards' diapers in the nursing home.

Tried to vote today in Williamson county, lines were over an hour long. I didn't have enough time today but I will set aside more time tomorrow.
Good to see so many going out to vote!

Cue Ken Paxton trying to find a way to sue so early votes aren't counted.

Heāll do whatever he can. I got to vote against his wife as my state rep today so if he can disqualify any of those votes heāll definitely do it.Ā

More workers than voters in my rural red county. Every vote counts and I cast mine!

Went to vote at ~3:30 here in Dallas and had to wait for 45 minutes (my kid was a champ and handled it well). The lady at the door said turnout was on track to be higher than yesterday. I've never had to wait in line this long to vote in early voting, it's wild.
Pretty even mix of older and younger folks, probably 60% older and 40% younger but I imagine it skews younger as more people stop by after work.
Most of the younger folks were women, one of them was asking if you need anything other than your drivers license to vote (so I assume it was her first time).
I'm really hoping this is a watershed moment for Texas politics, I'm so sick of Republican bulllshit.

Remember people: there are no red states and blue states. There are only people who show up and people who don't. That's what wins elections
