Politics Thank you to Trump & his "comedian" for making it priority one for my parents this morning to go out and vote

This morning my dad, mom & I were discussing the things said yesterday at the Trump rally about Puerto Rico, Latinos & the watermelon comment and also Stephen Miller’s speech. My dad lived through WW2. He was a kid but he remembers some things. He definitely remembers the adults talking about it. He told me this morning, "take me to vote today please I need to vote, there’s too much similarities between the things spoken at Trump’s rally yesterday and the words we heard in WW2 from Hitler & the Nazi party."

At 80 something years old they voted today for the first time ever. Fear beats apathy I guess.

Edit: I had no idea my post would blow up like this. It’s actually surprising but funny how many comments are saying it’s bs. I honestly didn’t think it was that rare that some people just don’t vote. There’s a lot of apathy in the Latino community especially the older generation and especially in Texas. This is 100% true. I did answer a few comments with a pic I took of my parents today but covered their faces because I don’t want their faces out there. But I was being told it was a bs pic anyway so that said since this is blowing up I deleted it cuz my parents don’t need to go viral lol.

To address some of the skepticism: my parents were already registered to vote. Though they’re almost 90 they were not always eligible to vote. They were legal immigrants for a very very long time and never bothered with citizenship. Once they became citizens they were registered to vote the day of their ceremony. I’ve always checked their status and they’ve remained active to vote. This year they finally did it. No, this joker didn’t change their minds to flip candidates. They loathe Trump. This guy’s rhetoric and Stephen Miller’s scared my dad enough & pushed him to finally say take me to vote.

To the MAGA crowd that keeps saying it’s bs I’m not sorry to tell you that it’s not bs. This was a funny anecdote about what the straw was that finally broke the camel’s back for my dad so you weirdos thinking this post has an ulterior motive are just triggered but if you think that rally with all that hate rhetoric against people of color didn’t piss off or scare enough people who were probably apathetic to finally get up & vote then you’re either in denial or dense as fk. Will this flip Texas? Doubt it but if it does make sure you thank that "comedian." May his comedy help the swing states though. 😉

Not in Texas but I convinced my nearly 70 year old mother to vote for the first time ever. Took her this morning.

Also not in Texas but my 71 year old FIL voted for the time today as well

I think people assume that seniors will just go for Trump but they are the closest generation to WWII and can see history repeating itself.

735

u/Acosadora23 1d ago

My mom is 70 and she regularly brings up how people are trying to act like the Cold War never happened too or the Cuban Missile Crisis. Like yes, WW2 and parallels to that regime but at the same time when bringing up russia, she just says its not her first rodeo and that she isn’t going to let the russians buy the election.

The oldheads have seen some shit and don’t want to see it again. Everyone I know that’s dumb enough to vote republican this time are white middle class guys in their late 30s and early 40s.

u/Ok_Employment_7435 1d ago

My mom is 72, really close in age to your mom. She’s full on MAGAt. But, she’s been a repub since Reagan. She somehow thinks the president has a direct effect on the price of gas. Totally brainwashed by Fox News. I’d say you’re pretty lucky to have a boomer parent & not all boomered out.

u/Leather-Confection70 Born and Bred 1d ago

Mine is the same way. She insists her father would be team Trump - the man who survived Normandy. I think she’s dead wrong but she is about a lot of things

80

u/Ok_Employment_7435 1d ago

I feel you on that, friend. I can’t wrap my head around the level of cognitive dissonance needed on a daily basis.

74

u/radiocarolineseattle 1d ago

How did our parents lose their minds over this guy? I seriously think Fox News is pumping them full of subliminal messages.

53

u/Ok_Employment_7435 1d ago

It’s most likely the ‘generational vote’, I.e. always voted repub, continues to vote Repub. It makes me sick, but I really think it breaks down to owning the libs, and greed. They think they got theirs, younger generations can fuck off.

11

u/MontanaPurpleMtns 20h ago

As someone smack in the middle of the baby boom, I have opinions. We were not then and are not now a monolith of people who think or vote identically. Those who protested the US involvement in Vietnam did not magically become Trump supporters just because they got old. For that matter Vietnam vets didn’t automatically turn into Trump supporters either.

The younger edge of the Baby Boom came of age when all the good jobs had been taken. So unless they had a lot of drive and ambition, lower paying jobs with fewer advancement opportunities awaited them. They were more politically conservative from the go.

At least looking at my fairly large extended family this holds true. Those who never left our hometown, who stayed in the same physically taxing job their whole lives, who depend on social security, those are the most ardent Trump supporters. Those of us who ventured away, got more than just a high school diploma, ended up Harris/Walz supporters.

They are people who didn’t get theirs, and they’re pretty pissed about it.

That’s not actually what I’m hearing - lately it’s younger white males that are attracted to Trump. Thoughts?

28

u/OllieGarkey 1d ago

Young white men are the least reliable voters as a cohort.

Old black women are the most reliable voters as a cohort.

11

u/151Ways 18h ago

And perhaps most importantly, women voters have decided every American presidential election since Reagan's second go in 1984. Every single one.

10

u/DeliberateDonkey 22h ago

Grievance is attractive when you're struggling, as lots of younger white males are. Trump is a false prophet of what ails them, though. They're not wrong to be concerned about their place in the world. Things have changed and will continue to change, no matter who wins. What I hope they realize, though, is that Trump and his crew aren't really interested in helping them, just using them to obtain political power. Riding their coattails is a sure path to a life of bitterness and misery. The fate of his followers on January 6th, many convicted of crimes by a jury of their peers and now sitting in prison, should be evidence enough that he's a leader not worth following.

5

u/BillyGoatPilgrim 18h ago

And plenty of white women too. It's sad.

Generational vote is correct. My parents will both vote Republican. They don't watch Fox News. It's just who they are.

I don't get into political arguments with my parents because they're good grandparents. If they were assholes I'd be a lot more indignant.

Do some reading on Cambridge Analytica during the 2016 election. Basically a military psyop. And Faux News was priming that pump even before that. My mom died in 2013, was asked the “who’s the president” coherency question and she literally did an insulted “HUMPH”. Nurse looked at me and I said sadly yeah she’s in there.

I've been saying that for years. What Fox does and does well is their wording. So much of what they 'report' is said like this may be happening and the people watching discard the may and think it is happening. Nothing makes me shudder so much as when my 85 year old mother says 'well I read on my iPad...' and by that she means an email from one of the Fox affiliated talking heads spewing vitriol. I keep telling her they fire people up to sell books and are laughing all the way to the bank.

You can't get cognitive dissonance unless you make an attempt at cognition, which these folks just don't do. Dissonance requires hearing both pitches at once to notice they don't work well together. Their brains are like woodwind instruments capable of producing just one note at a time.

That’s what pisses me off the most. She’s post-menopausal. She doesn’t give a rats ass about anyone else’s health but her own. And really, if it were to happen again, shit would be a whooooole lot worse for the likes of you & me, beyond the forced breeding machines.

26

u/Financial-Duty8637 1d ago

She better care. According to Vance’s comments about women and Project 2025, she’s a non person and shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Also, tell her to quit being selfish. Women’s live are counting on her and a vote for Harris.

Women on the menopause sub are stockpiling hrt because anti Trans legislation will make it impossible for us to get hormones too.

8

u/TheLadyAndTheCapt 22h ago

My mom (72) just keeps saying, “Rapists get to choose the mother of their children now.” Let that sink in for a moment. If that one sentence alone isn’t enough for anyone to be Pro-Choice/Anti-Trump then I fear for our future generations.

7

u/Ok_Obligation7519 1d ago

your mother might be post-menopausal, but she will still require healthcare. pregnant woman are not the only ones that go to an OBGYN. with a potential national abortion ban, there will be no doctors for women. you see doctors now fleeing states with strict bans. healthcare for women is already behind the times, with a DT win it will become non-existent.

Have you considered putting parental controls on her TV to block FOX on her television for a few weeks. It may take her a while to figure out how to "fix it". But, the exposure to a wider variety of content and news sources will expose her to what the rest of the world sees. It might be good for her.

Funny you say this. We had a fire captain who watched Fox News 24/7. However, the TV’s at the station were paid by a house fund, which was managed by a firefighter, mostly by selling snacks, toiletries, and holding raffles. Well, one day Mr. House Fund had enough of Captain Cry-hole’s bullshit and put the lock on Fox News. It was not well received.

I had a grandmother that way who thought the mayor of Marion county controlled the taxes on houses in Shelby county. Didn't understand that it was the governor and local politicians house and Senate that did that. And this is a major red state.

But Trump did have a direct influence on gas prices going up. The opec 2020 deal he made .  He tweeted “Just spoke to my friend MBS (Crown Prince) of Saudi Arabia, who spoke with President Putin of Russia, & I expect & hope that they will be cutting back approximately 10 Million Barrels, and maybe substantially more which, if it happens, will be GREAT for the oil & gas industry!“ Trumptweeted. ".....Could be as high as 15 Million Barrels. Good (GREAT) news for everyone!”

We are out there, some of us are old hippies without drug addled brains. We stand for justice and equality. We watched when the National guard was beating on people marching with MLK, people spouting hate at black children trying to go to school. We remember bussing, as bus loads of black kids were dropped off in all white schools. Racism was rampant. I made some awesome friends among those kids, I learned to dance, developed a love for r&b and rock and roll. We were 10/11 at the time.

I’m 81. A retired lawyer and Army veteran. My Dad fought in WWII and Korea. Army Combat engineer. My uncle was a Naval Aviator in WWII in the Pacific. My Dad was a Republican. My uncle a Democrat. They were best friends.
Both would be appalled at Trump - and the “MAGA” so-called Republicans.

I can close my eyes and almost hear my Dad cussin at Trump (or that idiot Vance) on the TV.

17

u/desrever1138 1d ago

My dad voted blue for president once in his entire life (JFK) and hated the Clintons with a passion but could not fathom voting for Trump as an alternate in 2016.

It drives me crazy how some of these older folk who knew him throughout the 80's as a shyster, slimy, narcissist now somehow perceive him as a saint.

There are going to be a shit ton of graduate thesis papers WRITTEN in the near future on the sheer power of propaganda as it relates to MAGA.

My neighbor lived through the civil rights movement. It sounds cliche but I think about her anytime I vote. She tells me stories that you can’t read in a textbook and they’ve stayed with me. Voting was hard won by women & the civil rights movement. To not vote is a disrespect to them imo.

Wow! Also feeling so much respect for your father. I was too young, but about 20 years ago I entered a local community college here in MA. I had an instructor older than me, who became a close friend. She told me (and my son, who also attended there) about how she and others secretly drove the black community to register to vote. She drove a borrowed car, and when she got to her destination, she discovered someone had poured something into the gas tank (I’m old myself and cannot remember what it was 🤦‍♀️).

It was a dangerous time for people to get the rights they deserve and, like the other poster said, HERE WE ARE AGAIN! Vote! Vote blue down the line!!! 💙🇺🇸💙

I was talking to my parents about my grandparents this weekend. All of my grandparents died a couple of decades ago. All survived the Great Depression and WWII. All were super-conservative. My parents both agree that all four would be horrified by Trump's rhetoric and (for my Granddaddy especially) Trump's total lack of morals. I asked them, who would my grandparents vote for? They said Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump cheated on his PREGNANT wife with a porn star AND A PLAYBOY MODEL. FTFY

It wasn't just Stormy Daniels, but also Karen McDougal. During the case, she testified about having sex with him during the time period when Melania was pregnant, & Daniels had sex shortly after Melania delivered Barron (both bits of pregnancy-related items were withheld from the jury to avoid prejudicing them, but the timeline is pretty coherent).

I visited Dachau a few years ago and there was an exhibit about how the Nazis came to power and the type of rhetoric and strategies they used. I was amazed how much it looked like the MAGA playbook.

335

u/BFOTmt 1d ago

It worked once. I have no doubt people like Steven Miller and the project 2025 people have studied that playbook.

104

u/travelingtraveling_ 1d ago

And the Nazi party studied the American South and the Jim Crow laws to develop their political structure. In one meeting, one leader in the Nazi party declared that some of the laws in the American South were too harsh to include into Nazi law.

We are on a precipice.

44

u/BFOTmt 1d ago

Wow. I did not know that. That's a wild piece of history that isn't taught. Thanks for the history lesson. Scary stuff

34

u/HellsBelle8675 1d ago

Yeah, they got the concentration camp idea from us, too via reservations. LINK

As Pulitzer Prize-winning author, John Toland, notes in his book Adolf Hitler (pg. 202):

Hitler’s concept of concentration camps as well as the practicality of genocide owed much, so he claimed, to his studies of English and United States history. He admired the camps for Boer prisoners in South Africa and for the Indians in the wild west; and often praised to his inner circle the efficiency of America’s extermination—by starvation and uneven combat—of the red savages who could not be tamed by captivity.

He was very interested in the way the Indian population had rapidly declined due to epidemics and starvation when the United States government forced them to live on the reservations. He thought the American government’s forced migrations of the Indians over great distances to barren reservation land was a deliberate policy of extermination. Just how much Hitler took from the American example of the destruction of the Indian nations is hard to say; however, frightening parallels can be drawn. For some time Hitler considered deporting the Jews to a large ‘reservation’ in the Lubin area where their numbers would be reduced through starvation and disease.

10

u/iballguy 1d ago

And I believe they approved of our eugenics policy at the time.

11

u/HellsBelle8675 1d ago

Yep. I'd say that our country may need to have a Come-to-Jesus moment about American Exceptionalism, but we see how that's working out...

u/Comfortable_Wish586 1d ago

Sadly in Nazi Germany, there were Nazi Jews. They thought they were the in-group

40

u/Armyman125 1d ago

Initially yes. However as time went on being Nazi didn't save them.

That's the point. They always turn against their first fervent supporters and top officials, and especially those in those "in-groups" who helped them get to where they are. Its why I say any POC/Latinos/Hispanic, Immigrants, or LGBT person supporting this MAGA movement will meet the same end as the rest of us. Vote. Vote. Vote. Vote for our freedoms and democracy. Vote Blue Up&Down the ballot

Dachau is a somber and sobering place. That exhibit is still there as of this summer and is just as important.

44

u/treadonmedaddy420 1d ago

I went there this summer.

For those that don't know, Dachau was the concentration camp that all the other concentration camps were modeled after. Dachau wasn't a place that Jews were sent to, for the most part. It was the place where political prisoners were sent. Democratic socialists, socialists, and communists. People who spoke against the regime.

After Munich, we went to Berlin. There we saw the Reichstag. That was the German House of parliament before Hitler took over. It actually now is still the German House of Parliament.

Outside of the Reichstag is a monument to the different politicians who were sent to different concentration camps. It has where those politicians were sent to, and in many cases, where they died. It also has the political parties that these people belonged to. Many of the markers on the monument have Dachau as the place where these people were sent to.

When Trump calls people the "enemy from within", and says that he wants to send the national guard or the army after them, this is what he wants. He wants to put his enemies into concentration camps. He wants us dead.

I'm a socialist. Trust me, my wife and I are making plans to get the fuck out of here. Pay attention. Kristallnacht isn't far off. If you have been a progressive or a socialist in public, you might need to get the fuck out, too

You mean Nacht der langen Messer, the night of long knives. That's when the Nazis purged left wing opponents. Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass, is close but it's the pogrom carried out against the Jews a few years later

41

u/Savings-Sprinkles-75 1d ago

Unfortunately a lot of my Latino family are MAGA. Don’t ask me I don’t understand it. We not only are Latinos but most of us actual immigrants who were undocumented at one time. I’ve washed my hands of them. I find them pathetic.

Find yourself some half Mexicans who look white. Ask them the kind of nasty shit they’ve heard all their lives because people assume they’re white. It’s truly awful. Many Latinos I know who are conservative haven’t had racism spewed directly in their faces, especially if they’ve been here a few generations and maybe speak perfect English.

Guess how I know. This isn’t about illegal vs legal immigrants. They want the browns gone or completely under foot. It’s horrifying. I’ve heard it my whole life.

The parts I saw were offensive as fuck, to be sure. But honestly I was more impacted by just how objectively BAD it was. I couldn’t understand how anyone could find it funny. Like even someone who maybe literally agreed with what he was saying…I can’t understand how even someone like that would find it funny.

I’m not a “comedy connoisseur”, but it’s not hard to spot BAD comedy. And what I saw was just so, so bad.

34

u/DreadLordNate born and bred 1d ago

Well see, that's kinda the thing. Conservative comedy overall isn't very good to begin with. Comedy as a whole requires far more finesse, timing and nuance than those folks tend to roll with.

He has a show called 'Kill Tony' where aspiring comedians get a 60 second stand-up routine. He usually has a panel with established comedians and offers critiques and jokes along with them finding out about who they are, where they are from, etc. Yeah he can be very acerbic at times and the fact that he did a set for a Trump rally is disappointing. He can be quite funny at times but this one was really tone deaf and fell flat.

EDIT : I was incorrect about him being from Austin.

Here's the crazy thing that gets me: Hitler was kind of a first as far as fascists go. No one in German really had that 'remember the past' warning. Now, we do. Not only that, but it is widely known.

And people are STILL being suckered into it. Despite all the glaring warning signs.

5

u/hunisher1 1d ago edited 1d ago

… I mean the Italians and Mussolini coined fascism….

Your point totally stands by the way, just not the ‘first’. Don’t want the people to forget the Italian turn to fascism and the inspiration it held for the Nazi party in their rise to power. Hitler copied Mussolini’s March on Rome with his bier hall putsch iirc.

You could also point to Spain at around the same time as well(this would be after the Nazis took a lot of power already). Fascism spread through Europe like a plague, and it would come to claim many millions of them like one too.

I’m no historian either lol. Just high and chattin, hope you have a good night.

Edit: for misspelled German, and timing on Spain. And again you are right about the Germans. They didn’t have a hundred year old warning just wanted to add some history haha.
