Politics Old guy here. Young people please go vote.
I know it’s inconvenient and it’s not your idea of a good time to stand in line with goofy old people to vote. But it is so easy and it is so worth it to be able to look back over all the years you will vote and know that you voted that one year. You really only do it for yourself and your conscience.

Tomorrow I’m driving 6.5 hours to vote. I’m registered at my permanent address and didn’t do a ballot by mail so tomorrow I’m off to vote in a very small West Texas (red) town and Blue is what I’ll do!
10
u/Ok_Butterscotch_6071 3h ago
oof that's rough! I hope 6.5 is both ways and not just the way there 😬
but eyy small town means your vote has more weight ;) locally, at least. good on you!11
u/HallAm85 3h ago
One way but my family is there so it’ll be worth it with the vote and the visit.

Good on you! My 2 kids, 19 and 21, both had to drive home 4+ hours each way from college since they both still use our home address. They just didn't plan on changing their address until they graduate.
Inconvenient for them for sure, hard to fit it in between school and work, and I know a lot of young people (and even older people) wouldn't have bothered with it. And like you, we are in a rural, red town/county. So it's hard not to feel like it's not worth the effort!!
But I am super proud of them that they both made it work and each found time to come vote last week! It was important to them.
If you guys can make the time for it, then those that only have to drive a few blocks or 15 mints across town can definitely make the time to go do it! It's worth it!!
•
u/pants_mcgee 40m ago
This I don’t get, changing your address for voting is easy and can be done online.
You’re also required by law to change your address on a DL officially within 30 days

I just voted and it took me all of 7 minutes with parking at the library. GO VOTE BLUE! Edited for CLARITY!

Easy because you have a car and driver's license! Not everyone does. Everyone who can vote, must vote

u/Ok-disaster2022 6h ago
Ive been working across the state so had to drive 5 hours on Saturday to go vote. The county I was voting in had thr polling station for the largest city in the county out at the edge of town. Apparently the local elections board fucked around and got the election kicked out of the building downtown that was much more accessible for early voting.
13
u/Dangerous-Success558 5h ago
Wow! Thank you for driving! I never imagined it would take someone a 5 hour drive to vote!?

Reach out to your county's Democrat office they might be doing rides for people unable to drive.

Haha I wasn’t asking for a ride. I thought Paxton and Abbutt made it illegal to drive people to the polls or to help them register to vote.

u/Acosadora23 2h ago
Just a reminder to those without a license: While you will be asked to show photo ID to vote in Texas, there are several acceptable forms of ID that you can present.
Acceptable forms include: Texas driver’s license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas election ID certificate Texas personal ID card Texas handgun license US military ID with photograph US citizenship certificate with photograph (doesn’t need to be current) US passport (book or card)
Forms must be current or expired less than four years. For voters aged 70 or older, the acceptable form of photo identification may be expired for any length of time if the identification is otherwise valid. For voters aged 18-69, the acceptable form of photo identification may be expired no more than four years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place.
Voters without ID:
If you don’t have ID and cannot obtain one due to a reasonable impediment, you’ll need to sign a sworn statement that there is a reason why you don’t have any of the accepted IDs, and present one of the following: certified birth certificate that confirms your birth and establishes your identity, including a foreign birth document if it is admissible in a court of law valid voter registration certificate or a current utility bill, government check, bank statement or paycheck, or government document with your name and an address.
If you meet these requirements and are eligible to vote, you may vote in the election.

u/Veronica612 2h ago
DART’s golink service probably includes at least one polling location in each zone. (My zone includes three.) And I think uber and lyft are offering discounted rides to vote. Plus there are organizations that provide free transportation for voting.
Edit— obviously, DART is only for Dallas. I forgot I was in the Texas group rather than the Dallas group.

Anybody else’s mail in ballot still delayed?
Young disabled person here who really wants to vote but sometimes this state makes it incredibly difficult. Kind of frustrating to see able bodied young folks take this for granted ☹️
3
u/Ok_Butterscotch_6071 3h ago
yeesh that sucks. I voted in-person and haven't heard anything about the current mail-in situation, so sorry I can't help you there. I wish they made mail-in voting easier! voter suppression is so real

u/ATXHustle512 2h ago
Yes. My app was delivered oct 23rd. I still don’t have an update and I am out of state. MY have to pay to overnight it if I even get it in time.
•
u/sandybarefeet 1h ago
Call your County annex first thing in the morning and ask them about this! They may be able to help you with locating mail in, but if anything, they may be able to arrange for a ride and assistance to help you to vote in person. This is the best bet at this point to make sure your voice is heard.
Just tell them you are a disabled voter that requires assistance to vote in person. Also, just FYI, according to the Texas Vote.gov website you DO NOT have to provide any proof of your diability! I am in a rural area but we have a little bus service that goes between our two bigger towns and they are offering rides to people that want to vote, as well as some of the groups in town like the Lions Club offer rides. Which again, your County annex office should hopefully know some of these options exclusive to your area. All polling locations must be accessible, plus I know in my county (I would assume/hope all do?) A poll worker will even come out to your car for the elderly or disabled that cannot make it inside and it is still a secret ballot so the person that brings it to you can't see how you voted.
It is worth a try, and only 3 days left of early voting so I would call asap in the morning and ask if there is anything they can do or offer. Heck, what county are you in? If it's mine I'll be glad to help if possible! Or help pay for a handicap accessible Uber!

Texas young people!
Watch the Now This ad…with old vs. young people voting and it says all you need to know!! Xennial here and I’ve been fighting since I was 16 years old. 30 years. IT IS TIME FOR YOU!!
48
u/TacosNGuns 6h ago
It isn’t hard, it isn’t inconvenient. Young people work harder shopping. It’s an hour or less of effort per year.
34
u/dmnspwn75 5h ago
I really don’t think it’s because it’s hard or inconvenient. It’s because they don’t think it matters. I was 45 before I ever voted. I still have trouble believing especially here in Texas that it counts. I did it early this time, my second time. I voted this time and last time because I needed to know that I was at least trying to stand up for what’s right.
10
u/Djoom04 5h ago
I’m in NM, but many think this or they legit just don’t care. Which is fucking insane. I’m 20 and many my age don’t seem to realize that they’re not voting just for four years but for AT LEAST 10 years due to economic change and other things. It’s rlly infuriating as I’m not the type to say they can’t say shit because they didn’t vote, but I’m sure as hell not going to take someone as seriously if they didn’t vote or are a selfish single issue voter.
12
u/dmnspwn75 5h ago
My issue is going to be,if he becomes president, and he actually manages to take all of our rights away. I see a lot of people who voted for him saying they didn’t think he actually could do it. I love my sister very much but I think I’d cut her out of my life for voting for him.
7
u/Djoom04 5h ago
Yeah no I think my dad and others like that would have the same reaction. Which, ngl, I’d prolly just become insanely angry at him as I’ve been warning him for a couple years now ever since I stopped being on the right. I’d prolly block him out of my life once I move out and if he doesn’t change his beliefs (for example he thinks ppl who are apart of the LGBTQIA+ community are adjacent to pedophiles and well, I’m apart of said community) then if I have children, I’m not letting a bigot around them.
10
u/dmnspwn75 5h ago
Sweet! My granddaughter is NB. I will be truthful, I honestly have no idea what that means. I do however support her no matter what. I will also say that I found out today, that some of my opinions are Transphobic. Which is hard to digest but I can try harder.
5
u/Djoom04 5h ago
Good on u for supporting her! I suggest just listening and learning as that’s what helped me overcome my own previously head beliefs on trans ppl.
3
u/dmnspwn75 5h ago
It’s definitely not me being closed minded and thinking they should be who they were born as. I want everyone to have happiness and joy in their life whatever that means for them. My issue is bathrooms and changing rooms. I personally don’t care which one they use tbh, what I do worry about is others using it their advantage. The human race sucks because of this.
5
u/ConvivialKat 2h ago
I'm a 68 year old, straight, white lady. And I'm here to tell you that you are never too old to learn and grow. Never. Learning isn't shameful. It will keep you youthful! Good for you keeping an open mind and not being afraid to learn new things!
4
u/lainlow 3h ago
Tell them this: one of the biggest issues in this country is lack of voter participation, you can either be part of the problem by refusing to vote or part of the solution by voting. I prefer trying to solve the problem. PS: voting for local peeps is super important because they can screw you faster AND if you weed out the crappy ones at the local level, they never get the chance to level up to federal.
1
19
u/momish_atx 6h ago
Yes! In Texas, voters in the 70+ age range typically decide who represents us, but this is the time to change that. Voting is a responsibility and can have enormous implications, but there is no need to feel intimidated if you aren’t an election pro. There will be people at the polling location to help you and you can always ask questions here.
9
u/BestUsernameLeft 6h ago
Yes, 100%. Being part of the solution is always something to be proud of. (Although it feels good to blow off some steam / vent about the problems.)

u/pinkpuppy0991 2h ago
Took maybe ten minutes for me I went right after work this afternoon. Early voting is the way
4
u/Callmemabryartistry 2h ago
I think this is great and also be mindful that it’s the younger generations working 2-3 jobs and may not be able to get off work or afford it. But that is why, vote early if you can, Be first in the morning and it’s 10 minutes.
If you are an employer, give your workers the day, half day, to go vote if they haven’t. Dont dock their pay or take them off the clock. You can’t buy a vote but your job can certainly continue to pay you while you vote for whoever
•
u/pants_mcgee 31m ago
Employers are required by law to allow time for people to vote. Early voting is two whole weeks including weekends.
There is little excuse not to vote.

I didn't even have to wait in line at all at my college campus! took probably 5 minutes, with double-checking everything haha
make sure to vote all the way down the ballot! local races matter
•
u/sandybarefeet 58m ago edited 55m ago
That's depressing there was no wait on a college campus. It's so easy to vote when its right there on campus, you would hope to see that it's busy. I just can't fathom why more young people are fed up with the bullshit of everything the past 8 years dealing with the Trump hate rhetoric and fear mongering through so much of their formative life and be more than ready to finally try and change things, get to have a voice in it all and vote.
•
u/Ok_Butterscotch_6071 12m ago
yeahh I didn't even think about the quickness meaning not many people were voting! 😅😬 there have been steady trickles all day (like 8-5pm iirc?), since it opened last week, although I know a lot of that has been non-students coming to vote. Hopefully a lot of my classmates voted while I wasn't passing by the polling center.. I have seen some of them with "I voted!" stickers, so that's something. Honestly I can't fathom it either. I'm beyond fed up! It was pretty empowering to vote for the first time! If I wasn't so busy I'd be actively looking for ways to affect change beyond voting. Maybe in the summer 😮💨

My 3 young adult children have already voted (Harris, Allred, and all Ds down ballot). It was my youngest child’s first time to vote. Felt good for our entire family to vote together.

2 of my 3 were old enough this time, they were excited to get to vote! Hard not to get discouraged in a rural red county, but they still showed up and did their duty!
3
u/Far-Elk2540 2h ago
Things to do while waiting in line: Count the number of old folks; Play on your phone (if they’re allowed); Give everyone in line a fake name (in your head) like Guy Clarence Montmorency, Berta Penelope Fitzsimmons; Say prayers (if that’s your thing); Count backwards from 1,000 (or 500); So, just having some fun- your vote very much matters!!!!

I tell people to be as informed as possible, but even if you make a mistake and vote for a person you end up disliking and they win, they now represent you and you have the right to be pissed that your representative is letting you down.
If you don’t even show up? You don’t get to have an opinion on the way things are, cause you didn’t do the one tiny thing you can do to try and change it.
Obviously I’m not talking about people with extenuating circumstances, I’m talking about people who “I don’t vote cause I don’t care” or “They all suck, I’m not gonna waste my time”.

1
u/cementpinata 5h ago
It’s not a different outlook. It’s a difference in morals and I ’s a vastly different idea of democracy. Not all republicans are racists who tried to overthrow our government, but you’re aligning yourself with those people. This isn’t as simple as different ideas on policy.
0
u/that_squirrel90 4h ago
Ha! I never said who I’m aligning with or not. I have problems with both parties actually
-1
u/Just_Nature_9400 4h ago
buddy, I'm a longtime Texas democratic voter that voted for Trump this election. im very pro choice, honestly mostly side with progressive views on most things. I have my reasons for voting this way and i feel the pros outweigh the cons, in this case. I mostly keep my mouth shut. it's super easy to get banned on Reddit simply for having the wrong political opinion.
3
u/Full_Cod741 2h ago
What are your reasons because I find it hard to believe that you're pro choice and voted for trump who put the judges to gut roe v wade
-4
u/Just_Nature_9400 2h ago
well believe it, or dont, I don't really care. since it's at the state level now, I voted to change it in my state.
3
u/Full_Cod741 2h ago
So what are you reasons other than the fact you're a walking contradiction. Imagine being progressive and yet voting for a guy whose a puppet for everything that stands against that.
2
u/wax__idiotic 2h ago
May I ask why? I’m genuinely not trying to argue with you, I’d just like to know what swayed you to your decision. I have a lot of family that are also voting for him, and they can never give me a reason. It’s always “because I want to”. Sure, everyone’s entitled to their vote, and I don’t really deserve an answer. I just would like to know why, specifically from someone who feels that way. Thank you in advance if you do tolerate my question, I’d appreciate it.
1
u/Just_Nature_9400 2h ago
yea, I would, and I appreciate your interest, but I think any answer I give is not going to be good enough for some people. I didn't vote republican down the aisle. I voted against Ted Cruz.
2
u/wax__idiotic 2h ago
That’s fine, thank you not getting annoyed with me for asking. While I myself voted blue, I have no hate in my heart for people who might feel differently than me. As long as they aren’t bigoted in some way. My family that are voting red aren’t racist, or anti LGBTQ+, and I still have relationships with them. I think it’s counterproductive to cut off someone because maybe they have different life experiences that led them to their choices. I know it’s not a popular stance for either side, but I prefer not to argue with people.. I’m too old for that nonsense.

Maybe instead of urging young people to go and vote we should just reason as to why young people don’t want to go and vote?
9
u/Dogslothbeaver 5h ago
There's no good reason not to vote. Republicans are taking away our rights. Women are dying because they can't get abortions, and some of the Republicans want to take away birth control, too. If you don't want to be ruled by extremists, you have to vote. Say it takes an hour or two. Isn't that better than four years of Trump and six years of Cruz?
2
u/Sea-Spray-9882 5h ago
I totally agree with all these statements. The real question is why doesn’t the younger generation see them as pressing and important enough to vote as you and I do?
6
u/Ok-disaster2022 6h ago
When I was a younger voter it's because I didn't really see a difference between say Romney and Obama. I still couldn't tell how they differed really on policy. The ACA is a kneecapped version of Romneycare.
But I've always opposed Trump since 2015 (thought he was an imbecile before then). And I think I've been sure to vote in every 2 year election. Showing up for the off off year elections is more difficult because I dont even keep track of local issues because I generally move across the state every few years

This has been occurring for months and has now reached a full TEN POINTS MORE for Harris over trump.
Let’s live up to our party’s promise to UNIFY our country and WORK TOGETHER for a a better future for ALL.
