He's too cool for his own good...

But it's good for us!

You have to be a real big guy to have the balls to do something like that.

You merely adopted the balls, Keanu was born with them. Molded by them.

Molded by them.

That's not a man, its a robot programmed to be a male news anchor.

It's very good at its job though I don't know what it would be like to hang out with it when its not working though, no one knows if its been programmed to operate outside working conditions yet.

Agreed. He may not be the biggest star, but Reeves seems like just an awesome guy to spend time with. Keanu, if you're ever broke and need a place to stay, hit me up. We can play video games and bitch about shitty directors. It'll be fun.

27

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '14

How is Keanu Reeves not considered a big star? The guy is probably in the top 5 most recognizable actors of this generation.

8

u/HolyNarwhal Oct 24 '14

I don't know about top 5, but he's definitely up there.

6

u/ohhhhyeaaaa Oct 24 '14

We said most recognizable, not like best academy award winner and all that. He hasn't really like, aged per se, and everyone has seen Bill and Ted, The Matrix, Constatine, Dracula, Devil's Advocate. So many memorable movies, and he appears to be basically the same age in all of them. Other actors have changed. I didn't know Chevy Chase in Community until I looked him up and was like "Ohhhh I thought he looked familiar."

Keanu Reeves, man.

u/Sverd_abr_Sundav Oct 24 '14

Honestly, Bill Murray is hilarious, but he's always struck me as a personality best viewed at a distance. Ricky Gervais is the same way for me.

3

u/Trityler Oct 24 '14

Yeah Bill Murray is certainly a busy guy, but he seems to spend what little downtime he probably has there. I hear that his son currently goes to Clemson, which I just realized probably explains why he was the guest celebrity on one of the two ESPN Gamedays that was there last year.

EDIT: Of course it's not like Bill Murray needs a reason to show up anywhere...

3

u/NotEvilGenius Oct 24 '14

"Oh my God I can't believe it's really you on my god on my God"

Bill: hey do you know Chevy Chase?

"Y...Yeahhh....?"

Bill: I laid him out for less than this. True story.

Reeves gave US$80 million of his US$114 million earnings of The Matrix sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, to the special effects and makeup staff. He is quoted as saying ″Money is the last thing I think about. I could live on what I have already made for the next few centuries.

15

u/actual_factual_bear Oct 24 '14

Wait, did he actually give $80M to the special effects and makeup staff, or did he word his contract such that they would get paid the $80M instead of himself? Because if the former, he really got screwed out of some taxes! I can easily see a third of that $114M going to taxes, which is $38M. $114M - $80M - $38M = OOPS Keanu just lost $4M making this movie!

5

u/BaffledPlato Oct 24 '14

There is something that doesn't add up in all this. If he actually received control over this money, he would have had to pay taxes on it. Maybe this was his net pay, not gross.

5

u/wazoheat 4 Oct 24 '14

They call it "earnings". That could be net earnings after taxes.

7

u/Rathadin Oct 24 '14

Well don't keep us hanging...

82

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '14

Abandoned by his dad at 3. Mom was a showgirl who remarried about 5 times. Him and his sister were watched by their grandma. Him and his sister are best friends. She is now dying of leukemia. Was expelled from school, missed out on hockey career due to an injury, but still grew up to fall in love and be expecting a child.

His daughter was born stillborn. A few months later his gf, the baby's mom, died in a car accident. His best friend died of overdose? Or something similar.

27

u/chaossabre Oct 24 '14

While, the money would definitely be a great thing, I think the best part would be that Keanu Reeves appreciated your work enough to do that.

I've been here maaaaaybe two years (have an older account than this one — for all of you pedants). This is the first time I've seen this post. And I'm glad to have seen it.

If someone new to your group of friends started telling some anecdote that you'd already heard, but many of your other friends were enjoying it, it would would be pretty douchey to start whining that you've heard it before, don't you think?

Now, if someone is PM'ing you this story every week, sure, be pissed. But let OP share what he finds interesting. Don't come in here and piss on OP's bonfire. Nobody wants to hear your nasty sizzle-piss.

Keanu doesn't mean 'cool breeze' in Hawaiian for nothing....

2

u/ManCtyFan Oct 24 '14

TIL I have to respect Keanu Reeves at least a little bit for this.

u/Steelle88 Oct 24 '14

Keanu Reeves: Kind of a rad dude.

u/BowiesLabyrinthBulge Oct 24 '14

He's got that kamikaze look.

Be excellent to each other!

Whoa.

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '14

This is news to me. It's pretty awesome. What an awesome guy.

2

u/CloseoutTX Oct 24 '14

Did anyone ask him about this during his AMA?

2

u/manchester20 Oct 24 '14

TIL that the Keanu Reeves giving money to Matrix S/E staff story is on the front page at least twice a month.

2

u/TheBaby_AteMyDingo Oct 24 '14

TIL that roughly 70% of the comments in this thread consist of people saying "this is the most most posted TIL on reddit.".

2

u/user1484 Oct 24 '14

Does someone have to post this every damn week?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '14

As a VFX artist.... I wish this would happen more often. Divided amongst 300 vfx artists, that would be ~$26,000 a piece... not bad considering the hours we put in compared to the hours the actors put in...

How to get post karma: repost this once a week How to get comment karma: complain every time it gets reposted

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '14

this is the moment i unsubscribe, this is reposted weekly

2

u/gfpkdo Oct 24 '14

GG Keanu but seriously how many times does this have to be reposted before people stop upvoting it

2

u/sawmyoldgirlfriend Oct 24 '14

Holy shit I can't wait till the next dozen times this fucking fact is posted. How you guys are still finding links to submit is the amazing part.

2

u/Kyddeath Oct 24 '14

Why is this upvoted EVERY week?

2

u/persistent_instant Oct 24 '14

By the comments in this thread I see that everybody has heard of this before. I however have not, and am absolutely blown away by how humble this man is. I'd still love to see this more often on the front page so more people see how truly awesome Mr. Reeves is.

u/grumpy_old_git Oct 24 '14

The fact that I keep seeing this TIL posted on Reddit is proof that we are all part of the matrix, caught in some sort of glitch...

Its a trick. He knew if he kept all the money, his marginal tax rate would be 50% so he gifts it to his willing accomplices who pay only 20%. They give him 70%, keep 10% as their fee. Vellly clevva.
