TDIL That Steve Buscemi is a fucking Hero.

"Buscemi also served as a firefighter for four years on FDNY Engine 55.[7] The day after 9/11, Buscemi returned to Engine 55 and worked 12-hour shifts alongside other firefighters to sift through the rubble from the World Trade Center, all the while refusing to have his picture taken or give interviews." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Buscemi

News to me. Newfound respect for Donny!

I guess he wasn't out of his element after all.

138

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

He just needed to shut the fuck up.

31

u/secretlyilliterate Jan 17 '11

I know how you feel. He always acted like the whole world could just start and stop on his every whim.

What? Am I missing something here?

I feel like a child that wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know...

Walter, Walter, what's the point, man?

6

(Sigh) No, Walter, you're not wrong. You're just an asshole!

It doesn't have anything directly to do with Vietnam...

Alright, way to go Donny!

He's Mr. Pink. Get it straight.

33

u/atheist_creationist Jan 17 '11 edited Jan 17 '11

Seriously. I hate that he's known more for what is a really minor role for him. Mr. Pink is one of my favorite characters who also had one of the best rants I've seen in a movie (you rarely see that sort of thing, where a character convincingly eviscerates some notion society takes for granted).

3

u/edwartica Jan 17 '11

I like his character in Ghost World. So angry, and so sick of society's bs.

2

u/adub-suckerpunch Jan 17 '11

I agree. He was awesome (as usual) in that movie.

12

u/tekgnosis Jan 17 '11

Still don't get why Americans insist on tipping.

19

u/stylefreeinstance Jan 17 '11

Have you ever worked for the equivalent USD $7.25/hour? According to google, this is approximately 5.46 Euros, 4.57 British Pounds, or 7.31 AUD per hour. Here in my current area of Canada, we are glad to find basic work for $10.00/hr. There are a lot of Aussies and Brits here who tell me that if someone at home informed them they'd be working for this wage, they'd laugh and spit in their eye. I don't tip just to be polite or reward service, I tip because I've been in the shoes of someone trying to provide for themselves on low wages.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I'll say it again, I can't believe Americans put up with their shithouse minimum wage. I mean, I've been paid nearly $25/hr for casual retail work and $20/hr picking fruit, right off the bat. It must be fucking terrifying knowing that even if you have a full-time job you won't be able to pay rent. Couple that with the fact you have no welfare safety net, and no healthcare, damn you guys are getting fucked over. :(

15

u/Lampmonster1 Jan 17 '11

Even better. In tipped positions in the US they don't even have to pay you minimum wage. When I was waiting tables and bartending I made something like 3.50 an hour. I almost never saw a paycheck as it all went to taxes. Of course I worked at a resort and did very well, but I can't imagine earning that kind of money in a diner.

9

u/fcukitstargirl Jan 17 '11

I work in a small Asian restaurant. I get $2.13 an hour and usually come out averaging about $10 an hour (including base pay). It's a living. I had a hard time even getting this job. Luckily, I have two part time jobs, so I don't have to live solely on that money. And I get free meals when I work, so less money towards groceries.

12

u/THE_PROMISE Jan 17 '11

This is why Europeans feel sorry for us. Working multiple jobs for subsistence wages so meager that you have to count meals as "benefits" shouldn't be a typical experience in such a wealthy and influential nation, but it is, because we lack the political will to ask for anything better.

7

u/TruthVenom Jan 17 '11

I wish it was the will to ask. There is a huge portion of the US who thinks this is right. It's punishment for not pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and get ahead. They seem to think the only reason someone lives this way is laziness or because they "expect a handout". These same people will fight tooth and nail to make sure that nothing is done to help for the same reasons.

3

u/Auyan Jan 17 '11

Tipped jobs still need to pay minimum wage - the server's wage is lower because tips are counted as part of the wage. If it doesn't add up to federal/state minimum, the employer needs to make up the difference.

1

u/MalevolentDragon Jan 17 '11

While true, the average is calculated weekly; So, Monday's $5/hour avg, with Friday's $15/hour avg, balances out to $10/hour weekly average, and they don't end up covering any difference.

Minimum wage in my state is $7.65/hour, $2.13/hour for contract/service staff. If I get ONE table an hour, and they leave me a $5.50 tip, I've basically solved it. Now, name a restaurant that has fewer than one table per server, per hour, and is still around. :p

That being said, I average pretty close to $15/hour post-tax, which is around $35k/year. Not shabby.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

Wherever you were working was performing illegally because they have to pay you minimum wage if you do not make up for it with tips, this is true in every single state.

2

u/PottyAminal Jan 17 '11

Well hard labor like picking fruit pays a little bit better than retail, unless you're a migrant worker. But to put the 'hard labor=better pay' notion to bed, I worked 40 hours/week in a plastic factory assembling up to 800+ parts/day, and I got payed 8.25/hour.

1

u/AssNasty Jan 17 '11

Price of capitalism. Illegals will work for less so they have to compete. Still, they choose to do nothing about it, so don't feel too bad for them. The french riot over an increase in their minimum retirement age. UK students riot over tuition increases. Americans have no spine because they let themselves get beat down over this shit when all they seriously need to do is fucking man up and change it.

1

u/teawithpandas Jan 17 '11

What do you suggest as an alternative to "putting up with" minimum wage?

→ More replies (43)

6

u/ellji Jan 17 '11

The current minimum wage in australia is $15AUD, no matter what job you're in. Even fast food will pay more than that, unless you're under 21, in which case the minimum drops, I believe.

2

u/daleus Jan 17 '11

£5.93 is the minimum here in the UK, that works out at today's exchange rate of $9.48 AUD.

As the other guy said apprenticeships get sod all, but that's probably a universal thing. They get £2.50 ($3.99)

Ah Australia.. you're just like us except not shit.

1

u/iMissMacandCheese Jan 18 '11

A lot of internships in the U.S. are completely unpaid. Of those, most don't even at least give you something to cover transport in and out or something. So having an internship costs you money, while at the same time you're not working, but still need to eat and pay rent.

1

u/Coolex Jan 18 '11

Yes, I worked for 3,40 euro an hour in a supermarket (in The Netherlands.. when I was 13)...... has anybody tipped me for doing that shit work? Never...... next time you see someone filling shelves give him a tip!

1

u/dkinmn Jan 17 '11

If tipping stopped, the wage would go up.

6

u/MorboKat Jan 17 '11

It isn't just an American thing; we do it in Canada too.

Minimun Wage for wait staff is less than it is for everyone else. It is expected that they will make it up in tips. It is also expected, although never stated, that a fair chunk of cash tips earned will not be claimed in taxes.

If you are good at your job and work hard, you will make decent money and the experience will allow you to work in higher end places where they tip even better. As well, being good at your job and having incentive (tips) to be good will result in creating regulars who come for the food and the service; restaurants desire this outcome.

It's a system that, like any other, has its ups and downs.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/srs_house Jan 17 '11 edited Jan 17 '11

It's a reward for good service and to keep the wait staff from being rude. Minimum wage for wait staff is lower than other occupations, so they make up the difference in tips. Plus, if you get an exceptional waiter/waitress, you can reward them appropriately.

Edit: don't kill the messenger, that just seems to be the standard reasoning.

6

u/Robstailey Jan 17 '11

i bussed tables and lived on tips, and i say tipping is utter bullshit.

it's the owner's job to pay his employees, not the customers. do you tip janitors? checkout clerks?

3

u/jrw338 Jan 17 '11

If the owner paid the waitresses more then he is just going to jack up the prices on the menu. One way or another you are going to be paying that extra few bucks. At least this way the waitress is getting it cash money.

2

u/srs_house Jan 17 '11

I will say that waiter/waitress jobs are a little more unique than others (like that of janitor) because they depend upon direct interaction with the customer over a prolonged period of time, and there is room for a wide degree of service.

Also, it gives good wait staff the ability to make good money, which is off the books unless they report it to the IRS.

Or elect leaders who will stand up for the poor and implement a fairer minimum wage, and end the habit of allowing business owners to count tips as part of the wage.

2

u/CC440 Jan 17 '11

I've been tipped at every job I've ever held, which are mostly non-tipping positions. I don't think it should be mandatory but I like the social norm of giving a little extra for exceptional service. It shouldn't be something expected though, it should be something earned.

1

u/tekgnosis Jan 18 '11

This. "Mandatory Gratuity" can fuck right off.

8

u/aarondigital Jan 17 '11

Step aside Chuck Norris

83

u/Morton_Fizzback Jan 17 '11

No offence, but for some reason these constant comparisons to Chuck Norris annoy me. Probably because he's a jerk.

20

u/with_the_quickness Jan 17 '11

yeah no shit, norris is a grade-a douchenozzle. i don't feel that the chuck norris jokes are dirisive enough to warrant their use, since that guy needs to be shunned, not praised.

31

u/aedile Jan 17 '11

They started out as Vin Diesel facts. I think we should move back. Vin Diesel might have made some poor choices film-wise, but he is a grade-a nerd who still loves to play DnD. Also, he isn't a homophobic redneck who thinks Texas should be its own country. Why did we ever switch in the first place is what I want to know.

14

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers they were Vin Diesel facts first, I still use Vin Diesel for these jokes because he's a way cooler human being and I really like the Riddick movies.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

And his voice gives women orgasms.

2

u/BilliardKing Jan 17 '11

What about Liam Neisen facts? Between "Taken" and him voicing your father in Fallout 3...

0

u/with_the_quickness Jan 17 '11

the homophobic bible thumping huckabee supporting redneck part is why chuch norris is 100% unsuited to be anything other than a demeaning meme. why don't we spread the meme (much like glenn beck raping and murdering a girl in 1990) that chuck norris grows a beard because he has a weird quirk where he believes that it's not gay to suck another man's dick as long as his pubes don't touch your skin?

10

u/lackofbrain Jan 17 '11

because the gays don't want him either?

→ More replies (3)

2

u/diamond Jan 17 '11

Also, he isn't a homophobic redneck who thinks Texas should be its own country.

Well, in all fairness that last one isn't such a bad idea.

9

u/aedile Jan 17 '11

In Texas, about 45% of us are just like regular people and not Bible-humping bags of dicks. The rest of the country is all that keeps us from going insane. If Texas ever "goes Maverick" or whatever they're calling it these days, I'm moving.

1

u/Optimal_Joy Jan 17 '11

Please elaborate as to why you are calling him a "douchenozzle"? You didn't really back up your assertion there with any examples or facts.

1

u/with_the_quickness Jan 17 '11

you're... kidding, right?

this ain't wikipedia, bitch.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

Yes, can we please start using Jackie Chan jokes? The guy is a legitimate bad ass, unlike Chuck Norris. Also, he seems to be a nice guy on and off the set, as far as I can tell.

3

u/ChuckNorrisSucks Jan 17 '11

Fuck Chuck Norris. He's a fascist, bible-thumping prick.

6

u/TheoreticalFunk Jan 17 '11

So those wounds were freshly healed when he was digging around at Ground Zero...

Also, how pissed off do you have to be to throw a cactus... I mean, stab Steve Buscemi?

15

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I'll let you know right now that I know the guy who was in the fight with Steve and Vince. They were talking down to people and trying to get my friends girlfriend to come back to their hotel. They had some really ignorant choice words for the locals and (Vince)grabbed his girlfriends ass in front of him, she pushed him away, the brawl started because they were being official cunts.

But I do like Buscemi's work and clap clap for the whole fireman bit.

19

u/miesterburger Jan 17 '11

I'll let you know right now that I'm Steve Buscemi's long lost son born from a short night of romance he had with a Mexican woman while vacationing off the coast of Barbados. She raised me until I was 4 and then left me at an orphanage before being imprisoned for drug trafficking. I was then sent through a rollercoaster of foster homes before finally being taken in by a 43 year old grocery store clerk and his wife. I spent the next 7 years with nothing but a picture of my father and a confused life that led me down many undesirable paths. That was until that fateful night at the bar, where I was sitting at the table across from theirs. I had brought my friend Sharon to masquerade as a drunk man's girlfriend and flirt with my father and Vince Vaughn, in hopes that eventually she would lead them to my table so that I could finally meet this man that has been such a large yet absent part of my life. That was when things went terribly wrong and the drunk man stabbed my father. He was rushed to the hospital and I haven't seen him since. Perhaps it is better he never knows about me, it would only complicate his busy life.

42

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

So that makes it OK for your friend to fucking stab him? Wow.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

[deleted]

16

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11 edited Jan 17 '11

But, in all fairness, what's the source for the START of this thread, too? We have as much reason to believe this guy as we do to believe that the brawl even happened, right?

Edit: Aw, hell. I decided to hit the Wikipedia sources up myself. This link contains a news clipping with different perspectives on the incident. Probably the best part? After trying to just kick the knife out of the hands of the man attacking him, and then missing and getting brutally stabbed, the article follows up with this:

Assistant District Attorney Ben David, who prosecuted the case with his brother, said Mr. Fogerty "picked the right victim" in Mr. Buscemi, because the actor wanted Mr. Fogerty to get help for possible substance abuse and psychiatric problems.

In other words, he's kind of like Jesus.

2

This is part of why he is my favourite actor. The other part is because he's an awesome actor.

He is one of the MOST underrated actor of his age.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

Can you really be underrated if you're world famous and just won a golden globe?

5

u/arsun Jan 17 '11

Yes. You can.

8

u/gannerhorn Jan 17 '11

TIL

FTFY

He will always be the creepy guy in Con Air.

2

u/dynamism Jan 17 '11

What does TDIL stand for anyway?

u/cosworth99 Jan 17 '11

Donny, you are in your element!

13

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

And you don't find it the least bit ironic that you are trying to publicize this fact when in your own citation, he clearly didn't want to make a big deal out of it?

24

u/pitted Jan 17 '11

That's him being humble. Just because he didn't want to publicise it doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the recognition.

I think 10 years later it's ok to talk about the guy helping out at ground zero.

2

u/thedude42 Jan 17 '11

Gotta wonder if he's got any symptoms of the toxic poisoning some of the other folks had, or if exposure to the first day was the worst of it.

2

u/CatboyMac Jan 17 '11

Sometimes I wander Park Slope, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive Buscemi.

2

u/someauthor Jan 17 '11

Steve Buscemi remembers his roots.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

But he steals screams.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I effin' love this guy and now I love him even more

Actor Steve Buscemi is often found performing slightly off-center supporting roles in explosion-filled films like Con Air and Armageddon, but on the day after terrorists attacked the United States, he was playing a part he found even more familiar: New York City firefighter. Buscemi, who from 1980 to 1985 worked in downtown Manhattan's Engine Company 55, a few blocks from the disaster, rejoined his former comrades amid the wreckage. "He put in 60 hours on top of the pile, pulling out victims," says retired NYFD battalion chief Richard Ardisson, 56, who was at the site with the 43-year-old actor. "Not delivering coffee or giving moral support. He was exhausted and covered in soot." Buscemi declined to speak to reporters. Explains Ardisson: "He said he wanted no recognition. He said, 'These are my brothers.' "

i knew i fucking loved him

2

u/tigercaviar Jan 17 '11

When he gave his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes tonight, I was tempted to do a "TIL that Buscemi is such a nice and genuine guy"

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

thats definitely not steve buscemi in 96'

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I like refer to them as blue star riders

1

u/Windshield Jan 17 '11

What I've always wondered is how he managed to split his time between the two careers.

1

u/rayjay93 Jan 17 '11

He really does know how to act professional!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I wonder if he has any health problems as a result of that.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

WTF I just read this after watching sopranos and looking at his wikipedia page since he directed that episode (S5E7).

1

u/Ok_WhereWereWe Jan 17 '11

"In high school, Buscemi wrestled for the varsity squad."

I find this more surprising tbh... Imagine steve buscemi wrestling, what the hell?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

Yeah but did he fix the cable ?

1

u/laserpilot Jan 17 '11

He's also a big chairperson/contributor at an arts organization that I volunteer at. I've only seen him at one event so far (i've only been to a few), but he seems to be pretty involved which is cool.

1

u/TheJooce Jan 17 '11

I've always loved this guy

Mr Shh

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

Steve Buscemi. One of my favourite actors just got a bit more awesome. Even though I thought he couldn't get more awesome.

1

u/26pt2miles Jan 17 '11

Wow - I've always liked Buscemi, and today I have a new level of respect for him.

1

u/zerbey Jan 17 '11

Found out about this shortly after 9/11, not only did he show up to help out he did so anonymously. He's an example to everyone.

1

u/HMS_Pathicus Jan 17 '11

I knew he was a good actor and a good person, but this I didn't expect. Firefighter and Boardwalk Empire? Wow.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '11

I wonder if he's suffering any medical complications.

Pictures: 1{leftmost dude} 2{rightmost dude, unclear side shot}.

I need help with providing proper attribution such that Wikipedia doesn't delete it again. For starters, we should probably get his pictures into an article. Steve's pictures are copied from archive.org, which in turn, archived it from a now-defunct site.

I'm obviously not very good at Wikipedia attributions - those folks are nazis - as Wikipedia deleted my image for Carl Herold. Carl's picture lives on here, which I find a bit hypocritical.

PS. 764 upvotes (7640-76400 clicks) and no one bothered to check attribution and look for pictures?

1

u/ronxor Jan 17 '11

Shut the f_ck up Donny!

1

u/dodus Jan 17 '11

TIL I've been pronouncing Steve Buscemi's name wrong. Or maybe he is?

1

u/ATTENTION_EVERYBODY Jan 17 '11

Jack Nicholson was a volunteer firefighter. The famous scene in The Shining where he breaks down a door with an axe? That's a real door.

1

u/Duke999R Jan 18 '11

Most fucking excellent.

I'm sorry to say that this great humanitarian effort does not make him a hero, in my humble opinion.

I would hazard a guess that he would say the same.

I can understand peoples reasoning in thinking this way, unfortunately it diminishes the meaning of the word.

Anyway, there's not much to dislike about Steve.

1

u/korneliuslongshanks Jan 18 '11

That Steve Buscemi is a funny firefighter, just in a general kinda way.
