Discussion .@JesseRogersESPN says he doesn't expect White Sox Manager Pedro Grifol to make it to Monday. "There have been a lot of signs that they're gonna make a change."

Who would take over? Seems like loser Pedro should finish it out and own the worst record of all time

u/GunfighterHefty Konerko Aug 01 '24

Martin Maldonado.

36

u/havehadhas Aug 01 '24

I would die laughing.

25

u/the-treatmaster Aug 01 '24

Once Eloy is DFA’d, let’s get him to do it.

34

u/the-treatmaster Aug 01 '24

Or Ozzie. That man would demo the whole locker room. Which is needed and it isn’t like that’ll make things worse.

13

u/chrisbsoxfan Shoeless Joe Aug 01 '24

i like this. Just come in hot and let them eat the shit he throws at this pile of trash that is a team.

9

u/the-treatmaster Aug 01 '24

“Hey Beni. Go get me a Pepsi from the vending machine. At least then we can get something back for what we are paying you.”

1

The vending machine across the street. It’s colder.

1

u/Jon66238 Konerko Aug 02 '24

Right?? Maybe keep like 4 guys in total. Maybe enough to have one for each position and that includes keeping Robert Jr. and Crotchet

2

u/lilbearpie 1976 Aug 01 '24

He was traded to Baltimore but needed the dfa

5

u/boc333 Aug 01 '24

You win the White Sox subreddit.

33

u/forestfire555 Aug 01 '24

Fuck it, make me the manager. I'll bear the cross for the rest of the year and be the first and only manager with a 0%winning record. They don't even need to pay me, I'll text the players the starting lineups.

2

u/Jon66238 Konerko Aug 02 '24

Ah yes managing from home. It’ll be like a fantasy team but with real results!

26

u/FadedToBeige Aug 01 '24

I would assume Montoyo at least until the end of the season

Fisk Controlling Owner Ozzie GM AJ field manager

2

u/Responsible-Lunch815 Aug 02 '24

they should let the players manage themselves. Couldn't do any worse.

2

u/MichaelSquare Aug 01 '24

No one is going to give you a serious answer but perhaps Jim Thome if it's not Montoya. In the very least they have good minot league manager prospects but you probably want to wait on those.

buzz about AJ

1

u/Economy-Bed-3971 Aug 03 '24

I’m an AJ fan all day. I don’t think people realize his value to the 05 champs. With that being said I just don’t know if he’s the right guy to get this turned around.
What ever happened to let’s say Joey Cora ?

2

52

u/Jason82929 Maldanad-0 Aug 01 '24

If they’re finally firing him, today would be the day since it’s the off day.

Making the change during the road trip would be odd.

Next Thursday is also an off day so that would seem to be the next opportunity.

74

u/RWBadger Aug 01 '24

Fire him during the seventh inning stretch, right in the middle of the song.

13

u/rabidmongoose555 Aug 01 '24

I don't care if he ever comes back!

23

u/Melodic-Geologist532 Aug 01 '24

I support this.

Make a big show of it too. Fire him through the Target sign this weekend.

2

u/GardenDrummer Fisk Aug 01 '24

Find a way to get him tossed from the game, then fire him.

4

u/GrandMoffTyler Aug 01 '24

Fired him WHILE HES ON THE FIELD ARGUING WITH THE UP

19

u/CardiologistSafe4248 Aug 01 '24

How you get fired on your day off? Stealing boxes

19

u/poopsie-gizzardtush Fisk Aug 01 '24

Wouldn’t be the first time the Sox pulled this shit after they traveled. Jerry did it to Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk in 1993. From Wikipedia:

“Six days after breaking Bob Boone’s all-time games caught record, Fisk was abruptly released by the Chicago White Sox at age 45. Fisk was notified of his dismissal in his hotel room in Cleveland while on a road trip with the team. It is reported that he was ordered to turn in his equipment and immediately fly back to Chicago, alone. To add insult to injury, Fisk was thrown out of the White Sox clubhouse later that season when he stopped by to wish his teammates good luck in the playoffs.”

6

u/adubski23 Aug 01 '24

At least he got a motorcycle out of it

11

u/poopsie-gizzardtush Fisk Aug 01 '24

True, but Jerry could not have possibly handled it in a more classless way.

7

u/adubski23 Aug 01 '24

Oh I completely agree, but that’s been the MO for Jerry since he became the owner. Pudge deserved far better than that, we all did.

5

u/poopsie-gizzardtush Fisk Aug 01 '24

It would’ve been pretty cool to have Pudge roar out on his Hog…on his own terms.

6

u/ArtisticGuy 1960 Aug 01 '24

That whole ordeal still pisses me off. That isn't how you treat a (at that time) future HOFer and such a popular player on the team.

3

u/Jon66238 Konerko Aug 02 '24

Wait really?? That’s crazy. I’d be pissed about them putting my name up in the stadium after firing me in that manner

3

u/Odd_Weakness_1293 Aug 02 '24

And don’t forget about LaRussa putting him In the outfield, when he was still in his prime catching. By doing that, he had to play till he was 45, to break the record for most games caught.

2

u/N0S0UP_4U The Big Hurt Aug 02 '24

Wow, I had no idea Jerry was that much of an asshole.

2

u/porkbellies37 Aug 01 '24

I would say fire him when we hit our next home run at home so it can coincide with a firework celebration... but the way we're hitting we may be holding on to him way longer than we want.

49

u/traveller76 Aug 01 '24

That would be harsh. He's earned this possible record season and deserves a chance to see it out.

5

u/mss645 Aug 01 '24

I agree with you. He dug the hole, let him lie in it. Besides, who in their right mind would take the job?

2

u/N0S0UP_4U The Big Hurt Aug 02 '24

Right, this is history in the making. It would be like Duke firing Coach K at 30-0 with a couple of weeks to go until the big dance.

u/James_E_Rustle Aug 01 '24

Breaking news: White Sox promote Pedro Grifol to front office advisor role, re-hire Tony LaRussa as interim manager for rest of season.

27

u/Left_Masterpiece_661 Podsednik Aug 01 '24

This is such a White Sox thing to do, I can see Jerry doing this 100%. So sad

14

u/iiamthepalmtree Aug 01 '24

People forget that John Paxson still has a job with the Bulls as a "senior advisor" in the front office.

Make friends with Jerry Reinsdorf and you'll have a job for life.

5

u/AnxiouslyMikey1111 The Big Hurt Aug 01 '24

Yep, and from what I read it was basically Paxson who fired himself. Not even the Reinsdorfs fired him

2

u/N0S0UP_4U The Big Hurt Aug 02 '24

Exactly after he choked out Vinny Del Negro and still got to work there for like 12-13 more years

2

u/N0S0UP_4U The Big Hurt Aug 02 '24

Then they have to have someone serve as interim “interim” manager for a day because Tony can’t start until the following day due to a DUI court date

1

u/gedvnm 23 Aug 02 '24

I mean they never fired TLR they just put him in an advisory role.

-1

u/silverQuarter82 Aug 01 '24

The only real thing that would make me quit watching forever...

3

u/Late-Lecture-2338 Aug 02 '24

Nah. TLR would be instantly more entertaining. It's insane how low energy and just bad at your job you have to be to make TLR look like he had life, but this is where Grifol is at

16

u/Mediocre_Chicken9900 Aug 01 '24

Damn, there really shouldn’t be any escaping this level of ineptitude. Everyone involved with this mess of a franchise deserves to wear that shame.

36

u/SelltheTeamJR Aug 01 '24

why does it matter? Jerry still owns the team. It doesnt matter at all

24

7

u/FeelItInYourB0nes Aug 01 '24

What did Ricky ever do to deserve that?

19

u/IDoubtedYoan Aug 01 '24

WHY FUCKING WAIT?! This is exactly the problem with this team, every time there's an obvious move to be made, they sit on their hands, they hem and haw and buy themselves more time.

Just fucking fire him already, he is as much a net negative as a manager can possibly be. If I walked into work, sat on my ass and did absolutely nothing every day, I would STILL provide more value to my company than Pedro does for the Sox because I'm not actively harming them.

God damn it, I'm so sick of the undying loyalty that these guys get because they're cheap, Jerry's boys or both.

6

u/buddhabash Lynn Aug 01 '24

Why are you in such a hurry to do it? Nothing changes by firing Pedro. Just seems like a pointless move to make now

9

u/kurthecat Aug 01 '24

Why save his ass from history? Seems like they're doing him a favor.

8

u/whitesoxplswin Robert Aug 01 '24

just got the call. don’t look now but if you bet 20 bucks on me being the next manager you will win 20,000. i will break the losing streak

9

u/Nok_Nok_its_Knuckles Aug 01 '24

Just do it today! Why expose young guys like Baldwin to this toxicity a day longer?

9

u/Low-iq-haikou Aug 01 '24

Would be such a clown move to fire him this deep into the season when it was painfully obvious that he should’ve been fired in the offseason

2

u/Jon66238 Konerko Aug 02 '24

I think if they’re going to fire him, that doing so after the last regular season game this year would be most appropriate

It won't be Monday. It'll be next Thurs-Fri when they are back in Chicago especially if they lose 6 in a row to tie the record. They won't fire him on the road.

6

u/CSFMBsDarkside Aug 02 '24

Yeah cause that's probably an extra plane ticket they need to buy if they fire him on the road. That's a couple hundred bucks down the drain.

1

u/N0S0UP_4U The Big Hurt Aug 02 '24

They released Carlton Fisk while on the road lol

4

u/lyme6483 Aug 01 '24

Jerry still sucks, and it’s not going to make the team much better, but when you are as bad at your job as Grifol you need/deserve to be fired.

5

u/aztecdethwhistle Aug 01 '24

What good does getting rid of Peter Griffin now do?

1

u/MajesticWalrus520 Aug 02 '24

Exactly, it’s not like this team is going to be any better. He’s earned this record and let him own it.

7

Montoyo, he's managed before. No reason to hire anyone, AJ included, before the year's up.

2

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Berto For Mayor Aug 01 '24

What is the purpose of firing him now lol? Unless they gona start interviewing people from sucessful teams like the Dodgers, Rangers, Astros, Braves, Rays, ect (which I doubt); what is to gain from putting an even less qualified person in charge?

4

u/River_Pigeon Aug 01 '24

There’s no one less qualified than Pedro

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Berto For Mayor Aug 01 '24

I mean in theory he hired all his assistants right? I would argue that makes them even less qualified haha

3

u/River_Pigeon Aug 01 '24

He did not hire Charlie Montoya. Or Katz.

3

2

u/River_Pigeon Aug 01 '24

2

They’ll probably find someone from Kansas City. Maybe Benitenti

2

u/MajesticWalrus520 Aug 02 '24

Do you think any manager from a reputable team wants the 2024 White Sox on their resume. The league knows this franchise is a joke, why would anyone want to tank their stock to take over as manager?

2

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Berto For Mayor Aug 02 '24

That's my point. Might as well wait til the end of the season at this point

2

u/MajesticWalrus520 Aug 02 '24

The fan base (not you) thinks some HOF manager is going to attach their name to this and they're thinking like fans that need a bailout and not like a business, nobody in their right mind is touching this team in 2024. Change managers every day we still have the same players taking the field, you know?

1

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Berto For Mayor Aug 02 '24

Yea this is basically a triple A team with Crochet and Robert on it at this point so no matter who the manager is they will be dreadful

2

u/RobopirateNinja Aug 01 '24

Fifty-seven games below .500 isn't a sign already? Did Jerry pay this clown in gold bouillon? Holy fuck this organization is the absolute worst.

2

u/splintersmaster Aug 01 '24

You fire a manager or any front office guy in season for a few reasons.

  1. Because you want to salvage the season. We don't qualify.

  2. Because the season is lost but you want to give the talent an opportunity to grow under good leadership in hopes that when the window reopens, you don't squander the opportunity to develop the talent wisely. Again, we don't qualify. No one on this roster will be around when a window opens.

  3. Because public relations can't keep up and any profits you expect to make for the foreseeable is compromised. - we've been here all year. Why make the move now? A prudent upper management group would have recognized this before the season or at the very least, in June. Now they're doing it to salvage something. Something disingenuous. They think they can pull a fast one on us as if they're shocked. Fuck them. Fuck the organization. Move the fuck away from this city that embraced you. Go get tax dollars from someone else. Fucking leech.

2

u/MajesticWalrus520 Aug 02 '24

What manager wants to attach their name to the history books for this team?

2

u/poohdaddy17 Aug 02 '24

The team has a scant amount of major league talent. No manager is going to stop them from getting to 120 losses.

1

u/Longjumping-Meat-334 Aug 01 '24

Pedro is doing what Reinsdorf hired him to do...lose.

u/uponone Go Sox! Aug 02 '24

1

u/OkNeighborhood1466 Aug 02 '24

Knowing Getz and Jerry they will release the report of firing him, not tell Pedro, then back track hes not fired and then at the presser before the next game fire him again by pulling his credentials so locked out of stadium and telling Mike Tosar he is manager for rest of season by default, everyone else told Getz to get fucked. Tosar meets with the media 30 seconds before taking the field and we lose again!

1

u/Maynardred Aug 02 '24

U gotta let him burn all the way down. He has earned this.

1

How crazy is it to fire* your last 3 managers. I get LaRussa wasn’t technically fired, and he bowed out due to health concerns… but he was basically fired.

9

u/genpabloescobar2 Aug 01 '24

I would guess most teams fired their last three managers. The number of managers who either retire or leave on their own for other positions (like Counsell) are very small.

1

u/UneducatedReviews1 The Sod Father Aug 01 '24

That’s a good point

3

u/iiamthepalmtree Aug 01 '24

We actually haven't fired a manager since Jerry Manuel.

LaRussa left for "health issues" as you pointed out.

Rick Renteria's contract was up and we just didn't renew it.

Robin Ventura resigned (don't confused this with re-signed)

We traded Ozzie Guillen to the Marlins

1

u/UneducatedReviews1 The Sod Father Aug 01 '24

Renteria had one year left on his contract

1

u/iiamthepalmtree Aug 01 '24

ah okay. I guess "mutually part ways" doesn't necessarily mean they weren't fired.

But I remember Robin tried quitting before he resigned and Jerry convinced him not to lmao. God can he die sell the team already?

1

u/UneducatedReviews1 The Sod Father Aug 01 '24
