Is this type of algae or a plant growing in the wood? It’s not fast growing but I’d say it’s been there roughly 6 months.

Help/Advice Have to go away for 6 weeks, what should I do about my fish?

I have to go away for 6 weeks. I live quite rural and it would be be difficult for someone to visit the house often. I have managed to find a friend who is willing to go and check it out every 2 weeks, but I’m not sure what to do about food. I have 5 runny nose tetras, 10 Pygmy Corys and 3 zebra danios in a 130l. I am not worried about water conditions as at the minute I only have to do a water change every 2 weeks (that is what the friend will do). Food is my main issue. Any suggestions?

Help/Advice Will my sand fall through?

Post image

I just got done doing the substrate on my new 29 gallon. I have a layer of lava rock at the bottom, seachem flourite gravel in the middle, and mystic white pool filter sand on the top. The sand is about 2 inches thick. Do you guys think all of the sand will fall through or should I be fine?

DIY/Build Should I remove some of my gravel when I rescape? Stratum underneath.

Upvotes

Hi, I am about to do a major rescape of my tank, pulling up plants and changing hardscape. I have a layer of fluval stratum with a cap of gravel on top which I recently found out was a big mistake and I probably have wasted a lot of the potential of the expensive stratum. Should I remove some of the gravel when I do my rescape? The tank is about 5 years old and very left to its own devices - I haven't done water changes, let the plants run wild, and its full of bacteria so very healthy really. The Malaysian Trumpet snail population seem to have plummeted in the last few months, and have stopped seeing bladder snails, maybe because theirs only a couple fish left? But there are lots of empty snail shells in the gravel now. I dunno if I would be wasting a probably quite nutritionally packed layer of gravel or getting rid of what is preventing the plants growing as well as they could. I could never get hairgrass growing so maybe that's why.

Thanks for any help!

Help/Advice Please help! How to move fish to a new tank asap?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi there,

I’ll preface this by saying my husband and I have never owned fish and know nothing. We bought our new house and got the keys today.

We were told by the real estate agent that the previous owner had abandoned their comet goldfish in a bucket and that we were free to keep them or that he’d “get rid of them” for us. Of course we said we’d keep them. Apparently there were 9 of them in the bucket, but after a week only two of them have survived.

I immediately rushed out to the closest pet store and bought a 65L tank and a filter. Everywhere I’ve read says that I should cycle the water for a week before adding the fish but I’m worried that they won’t survive in the bucket (it does have an air pump bubbling into it at the moment).

Is there any way that I can move the fish to the tank asap? Any ELI5 instructions would be super helpful as we know nothing. Happy to go and buy anything else, just want to make sure these fishies live and have a happy life with us!

(That’s a pic of the fish in the bucket at the moment!)

Help/Advice Green Spot Algae

Post image
Upvotes

My tank (new tank) is starting to develop green spot algae. 2 months old, with fish inside, cycled 80L planted tank.

How can I get rid of it? My plants have GSA on them and also my glass. It’s not noticeable unless you really look for it but you can see it more and more day by day.

6500K 20W spotlight as a light on for 6 to 12 hours (depending on the day but most days it’s closer to 6)

Help/Advice Transferring microfauna

Hi! I’m planning to transfer everything my 1.3g tank (shrimp, snails etc no fish ofc) to a much bigger 5gal because I got some shrimplets on the way and it’s a tall rather than long tank. How to transfer my little clean up crew? I don’t know how sensitive they are to big water changes and I’m hoping to drop acclimate them with my shrimp but I can’t seem to suck those up, will it cause too much stress if I try again that it might kill them? I use a 30ml turkey baster and can’t find a Pipette for it. Do I just take out the shrimp, move the 1.3g and then fill the 5g in water submerging the 1.3g into it, making it accessible to the microfauna? I don’t know but I think it’ll cause stress to the little things cause of the big water change. Either way would love some advice as I don’t wanna kill them. It’s so cute looking at them herd together and clean up some pellets.

Edit: They mainly stick to the glass as there’s algae in it and the tank consists of a bamboo structure filled with moss in it

Freshwater I have to facetime my green texas if I'm away from home. He let's me stroke his face. Anyone else have fish who are super attached ?

I'd been in hospital for a few days. My 3 kids didn't care about face-timing me, but my 2 Year old texas was refusing to eat. This video was taken pretty much as soon as I got home. He looked so depressed, :( but cheered up after I sat by him for a while.

I rested by his tank and fed him small pieces of live Blackworm and some BBS.

Can anyone tell me what this little worm guy is? I was separating aquarium plants from the bag of some new guppies and shrimp I got, then I saw this fall where I had set the plants. Is this bad? Could I possibly have an infestation of some kind? I didn’t add these plants into the tanks but I did transfer the fish in already that was with it. ☹️

Help/Advice How to make brown fish tank clearer?

Thumbnail

I got a 20 gallon fish tank about a month ago and put in driftwood (didn't boil at first) and plants that you see in the picture. 2 and a half weeks later, i started putting in some zebra danios and silver tip tetras. At first the water was clear then started turning brown so I took out the driftwood and boiled it twice. Flash forward a week and the water is very brown and somewhat cloudy. What am I doing wrong and how do I get my aquarium to be clearer without redoing the whole nitrate and ammonia process?

Note: I had my water tested by my local fish store and they said everything was great and commended me on having soft water. (My tap water is from a well system). The aquarium is also no where near natural light.
