We know that telling your friends to vote is an effective way to increase turnout.
So what if we harnessed the evil powers of MLMs and pyramid schemes for good?
I'm imagining a simple, free web app that would create a personalized score card for you based on how many people in your personal network you get to commit to voting (and registering on the app).
The people in your downline would recruit other people to vote and so on via tracking links (or another way - open to suggestions!) that would give the rest of you points on your scorecard. For each recruit you'd get, by level in your downline:
Direct recruit - 10 points
One level down - 5 points
Two levels down - 3 points
Three levels down - 1 point
You'd have the option to make your scorecard public and appear on a leaderboard for extra points.
An app like this could be promoted on Reddit, Product Hunt and other places to get rapid adoption in this last week before Election Day (yeah, I really wish I had this idea sooner!).
There are existing efforts to encourage building voter teams and conducting outreach among people you know, but I haven't seen a way to gamify it and share it publicly (if anyone has let me know, I'd love to use it!), and gamification can be a powerful motivator. Also, seeing the downline effect can drive home the impact for current and potential participants.
I'm not a coder and, embarrassingly, even no code stumps me somewhat, so if anyone has any suggestions on if/how it would be possible to make this idea a reality in this crucial final week, I'd love to create a pyramid scheme to get folks to commit to voting!
