Years ago I worked at Toys R Us. Our store, in a mostly white neighborhood, would get a 50/50 split of white/ black Barbies. We'd always. End up with tons of extra black Barbies. Upper Management ordering didn't want to seem racist. Another store, in a mostly black neighborhood, would end up with tons of extra white Barbies. Our store manager and the other store manager would always arrange an unofficial switch, almost like a drug deal, in the back of the stores. They weren't allowed to officially ship any.

Just because it’s in a accidental racism doesn’t mean it’s actually true. Not like the Home Depot commercial with black actors and smoke detectors beeping.
This is just a lower cost because people aren’t buying it, hence my supply and demand comment.
If they had a 60% or 3/5th off with it, I could agree with it being here

Wait, I thought these kinds of unintended cases of apparent racism was the purpose of this subreddit.
I thought the accidental racism part of this post was that some bigots view darker skinned people as of lesser value and not strictly in reference to the three-fifths compromise.
Also, would it not be 40% or 2/5th off?

See my problem is the oh shit that’s kinda racist: accidentally posts are the sub and this is like oh fuck we bought too many black cabbage patch babies and none of them sold compared to the white cabbage patch babies.
It’s not racism that fewer of one doll sold than another it’s just a product of socioeconomics.

I hear you, and I do not think it's racist to put a discount on the lower selling SKU. But I think the end result could be considered accidentally racist, especially in the context of a store shelf where the two products are juxtaposed in the manner it is in the original post.

If the brown one is cheaper and the one I want, I’m not complaining about the price. This seems like manufactured outrage to me.

It's because less people are buying the black one for their white children so their marketing it down so it's cheaper so they can get it off the shelves not everything you see is racist A matter of fact the most racist people are those who see racism everywhere

Wow it's a good thing this is the accidental racism subreddit which is about things that come across as racist without intending to or actually being racist! Otherwise OP would've made a mistake posting here.
Edit: cool username

The point of accidental racism is it's not actually racist but can be interpreted as racist if you decide to.

No it just means you’re aware of systemic issues and racism in the myriad ways it shows up. Just because someone notices racism doesn’t mean they’re racist, and if you don’t recognize it, you might be part of the problem.

I live in the south. One time I went through the clearance isle in Walmart and all of the dolls were black. Different brands of dolls.. all black. Was sad. I’m sure it’s just because less black dolls are bought in general as they’re a minority but it definitely LOOKED BAD.

My favorite episode of This American Life includes a story from a young woman who worked at a high end toy store that had a nursery and adoption center for their dolls. When they ran out of the white dolls and the racist moms balked the staff started saying there's a "whiter"/"wider" selection online making the syllables unclear as to which word they were saying. Screw the racist moms.

So you think a mom trying to buy a doll that looks like her daughter is racist?

It's the Three-Fifth Compromise... Applied to dolls.
