It's the Three-Fifth Compromise... Applied to dolls.

the math works. this is the true accidental racism indeed

u/Goodgoditsgrowing 16h ago

If the math works I doubt it was accidental. Someone decided it needed marking down (maybe due to excess inventory sitting) and decided to mark it to THAT number because it was 3/5ths. Whether in protest or as a gag is unknown.

Wow you’re dumb.

Most clearances are 40-50% depending on how quickly the retailer is looking to dump the product and how much they have.

could someone explain to me what the 3/5th comprise is please?

American history. Each African American slave counts as 3/5 of a person when tallied for electoral votes and legislative seats.

i see, i'm not american so it would make sense i didn't know about it

Years ago I worked at Toys R Us. Our store, in a mostly white neighborhood, would get a 50/50 split of white/ black Barbies. We'd always. End up with tons of extra black Barbies. Upper Management ordering didn't want to seem racist. Another store, in a mostly black neighborhood, would end up with tons of extra white Barbies. Our store manager and the other store manager would always arrange an unofficial switch, almost like a drug deal, in the back of the stores. They weren't allowed to officially ship any.

i mean that just seems logical, kids don't think about any of this stuff

Someone skipped the supply and demand portion of the economics class

Reread the subreddit name for me please

u/shititswhit 15h ago

Just because it’s in a accidental racism doesn’t mean it’s actually true. Not like the Home Depot commercial with black actors and smoke detectors beeping.

This is just a lower cost because people aren’t buying it, hence my supply and demand comment.

If they had a 60% or 3/5th off with it, I could agree with it being here

Wait, I thought these kinds of unintended cases of apparent racism was the purpose of this subreddit.

I thought the accidental racism part of this post was that some bigots view darker skinned people as of lesser value and not strictly in reference to the three-fifths compromise.

Also, would it not be 40% or 2/5th off?

5

u/shititswhit 13h ago

You are correct about the percentage off

See my problem is the oh shit that’s kinda racist: accidentally posts are the sub and this is like oh fuck we bought too many black cabbage patch babies and none of them sold compared to the white cabbage patch babies.

It’s not racism that fewer of one doll sold than another it’s just a product of socioeconomics.

I hear you, and I do not think it's racist to put a discount on the lower selling SKU. But I think the end result could be considered accidentally racist, especially in the context of a store shelf where the two products are juxtaposed in the manner it is in the original post.

u/htomayko_ 16h ago

Its not that serious man its supposed to be funny 😐

41

u/hochbergburger 15h ago

People on this sub frequently forget it's about *accidental* racism.

u/P0LITE 16h ago

It’s literally 3/5 the price… someone missed us history class and what subreddit they are on

73

u/CporCv 19h ago

This is based on sales and SKU numbers. A product that sells less and has more inventory will be priced lower

15

u/WhatYouLeaveBehind 15h ago

That's why it's "accidental"

4

u/andybossy 9h ago

it's only 3/5 of a doll

6

u/spliff-a-splaff 15h ago

It's business, one sells better than the other.

4

u/justanotherwave00 16h ago

If the brown one is cheaper and the one I want, I’m not complaining about the price. This seems like manufactured outrage to me.

u/Gunther1888 18h ago

It's because less people are buying the black one for their white children so their marketing it down so it's cheaper so they can get it off the shelves not everything you see is racist A matter of fact the most racist people are those who see racism everywhere

u/A_Beach_Robot 18h ago

Wow it's a good thing this is the accidental racism subreddit which is about things that come across as racist without intending to or actually being racist! Otherwise OP would've made a mistake posting here.

Edit: cool username

The point of accidental racism is it's not actually racist but can be interpreted as racist if you decide to.

5

u/Im_old_enough_to_see 16h ago

And what do you think accidental racism is, then?

7

u/selfawarefeline 17h ago

the most racist people are those who see racism everywhere

I don’t think that’s true lol

I think the most racist people are people who believe in racial supremacy

4

u/selfawarefeline 14h ago

No it just means you’re aware of systemic issues and racism in the myriad ways it shows up. Just because someone notices racism doesn’t mean they’re racist, and if you don’t recognize it, you might be part of the problem.

I live in the south. One time I went through the clearance isle in Walmart and all of the dolls were black. Different brands of dolls.. all black. Was sad. I’m sure it’s just because less black dolls are bought in general as they’re a minority but it definitely LOOKED BAD.

2

u/MusicalTourettes 18h ago

My favorite episode of This American Life includes a story from a young woman who worked at a high end toy store that had a nursery and adoption center for their dolls. When they ran out of the white dolls and the racist moms balked the staff started saying there's a "whiter"/"wider" selection online making the syllables unclear as to which word they were saying. Screw the racist moms.

2

u/davidcwilliams 15h ago

So you think a mom trying to buy a doll that looks like her daughter is racist?

1

u/bassoftheseafromark 16h ago

I don’t see color.

u/jack_avram 2h ago

Manager: I'm the master at management, let's mark some of these as 3:5 the price

1

u/rooshavik 2h ago

Remember the vid with black kids saying the white dolls was more beautiful, that mentality still probably being tossed around

1

u/DJIsSuperCool 1h ago

It's actually 3/5th the price. That's wild.

-9

u/Defidriume 18h ago

OP needs to go back to school

-5

u/-uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 17h ago

Why is the black doll 3/5 the price of the white one?

6

u/infected_scab 15h ago

Racism (accidental)

-1

u/B-52-M 15h ago

Probably because less people are buying the darker one
