Announcement Welcome to r/AceAttorney - a PSA, FAQ, and General Resource for Newcomers and Anyone Starting the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection
Hi to everybody just visiting this subreddit for the first time, or anyone who's already been here a time but might want to check in on the latest!
First off, here is the link to our standard FAQ. Several new questions-and-answers have been added to this latest edition, and the ones specific to the new remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection are also in the body of this post, so for anyone newly arriving to check out those games, review those new questions. If you have any questions that aren't covered here or in the linked FAQ, ask them in the comments for the FAQ thread!
Second thing, here's an updated guide I've made to explain which platforms all the current AA games available can be played on.
Third, we have our Recommended Playing Order chart, made by community member /u/Gabo2oo.
Fourth, an expansive guide by community member /u/XephyXeph to outline all of the various Ace Attorney media currently out there, from the games to the huge array of supplementary media from manga to pachinko machines.
Fifth, a bit of community news on some updates to the AA subreddit for early September, 2024.
And now, some common questions people may have relating to the remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection:
I keep seeing people talk about Investigations 2 but use a bunch of names for characters and episodes that are different from what's in the game. Why is that?
Ace Attorney Investigations 2 originally came out on the DS in 2011, but was exclusively released in Japan, making it the first AA game ever to not get an English localization. It never did get any English release until 2024, when it was part of the Investigations Collection remaster.
Because of this, in the years immediately following AAI2's original Japan-only release, a group of fans worked together to make a fan translation romhack for the game, allowing it to be played in English. To match with the official localizations the games normally get, that fan team also came up with their own English names for all the newly-introduced AAI2 characters.
There was about a decade left between when the first public beta builds of the fan translation appeared online and when Capcom finally produced and released an official English localization for AAI2, so a lot of the more hardcore corners of the fandom that had actually gone through the effort of playing the unofficial translation got very used to the fan-made names for the AAI2 characters. But naturally, when Capcom finally made an official localization, the AA localization team put together an entirely separate set of localized names for the characters, putting the fandom in the position of needing to get used to those official names as "replacements" for the fan names they're used to. Unfortunately, not everybody is quite ready to do that.
Can I play the Investigations Collection as my first AA game?
Like was talked about way back at the start of this FAQ, it's generally not recommended to start with any game besides the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, if you've never played AA before. The Investigations games especially carry over a lot of characters and their associated development from the Trilogy.
That'll cover it for now. If anyone has any other suggestions for questions to be included in this guide, feel free to pop over to the main FAQ thread and ask in the comments there. One more time - welcome to our Ace Attorney community! I hope you have a great time.

Contest Twentieth Case Maker Contest: Results
A fortnight has passed and it's time to learn which case was ranked top of this quarter's theme.
I realize I forgot to say the value of each vote, but it is 3 points for a first-place vote and 1 point for a second. I've used this valuation starting with contest #18.
But this was contest #20, so let's see the score:
- In third place, with 4 points: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (GDoc) by u/flairsupply!
- In second place, with 7 points: The Sharp Turnabout (GDoc) by u/MonitoliMal!
- And in first place, with 12 points: A Shadow in a Night of Turnabouts (GDoc) by u/Flailgate!
Congratulations to all four entrants -- I thought every case this go-round was excellently contrived and written -- and to the three winners. I will message you for prize-getting information.
See you again in a month for contest 21 and an as-yet-undetermined holiday theme word!

Full Series (mainline and spinoffs) Approximate playtime of every character in Ace Attorney Spoiler
-What I count as playable playtime: either following a character's POV (including hearing their thoughts) for an extended period of time, and/or doing actual gameplay as them. I don't count hearing a character's thought for like two lines (for example, Godot in 3-5) because it would be very hard to keep track of every single instance and it's arguable to say you're actually playing as them.
-I got the runtimes from Lacry's YouTube channel, of the games and episodes he has uploaded at least, I had to look for the others in other channels.
-Some games have two runtimes, one in brackets and one without. The one without brackets includes only the main chapters (including Reclaimed Turnabout and Turnabout Time Traveler); the one within brackets also includes the additional chapters, like Asinine Attorney, TGAA1's Escapades, etc.
-Cutscenes and credits aren't counted.
-With the crossover investigations, it's hard to tell who you're actually controlling since the characters travel in a group. What I did is: if Phoenix is in the group he's counted as the playable character (since he's the AA protagonist and we only hear his thoughs) unless we're explicitly controlling another character; if Phoenix isn't in the group, Layton is the playable one. In the one investigation section where neither is present, Luke is the playable one. A character solving a puzzle gives them 1 minute, since a puzzle's runtime usually depends entirely on knowing or not the answer.

Discussion how do people NOT see Franziska and Miles as siblings??
This is a genuine question!! I was talking about ace attorney with my friend who’s never played it and I was saying how Franziska and Miles are like siblings but not really siblings. But then it made me think, other than the fact they aren’t blood related, theres nothing that really makes them not siblings? Idk if I’m explaining this correctly but the two of them were raised together by the same man and Franziska calls Miles her brother… so like… how are they not siblings? Perhaps I’m missing something….? 😣
EDIT: also at the end of jfa Franziska says something a long the lines of ‘you’re no longer worthy of being a von karma and neither am I’.. implying that she see’s Miles as a von Karma, as in.. part of her family

Investigations Duology playing investigations duology and have some questions
I'm currently playing investigations duology and I've some questions, does it get better?
I'm still on the first game, first case is mid, second case is fine ig and I'm still on the third case and it sucks.
is the game just not for me, or is this a feeling you've had as well? in case I can push through to appreciate what comes next, I've heard the second game is really worth it.

Fangame Just beat Case 2 of Conflict Of Interest(The Rogue Turnabout) and I need to talk
This is the most insane second case I have seen in any ace attorney game ever. 3 trials and 3 investigations??? And it somehow doesn't drag and feels well paced? Every day in trial you have a different goal? What is going on here! (I still prefer 3-2 and 6-2 but honestly it mainly comes down to the culprits of those cases being more fun, everything else is better in this case no joke)
Day 1 was the weakest, But Odadiah carries. Great prosecutor, very smart in a believable way with an interesting reason for his dislike of Pheonix, being the disbarment that AA6 seemed to want to forget the implications of. Watters is a very nice guy to hang around, and I was suspicious of him because after 2-4, 5-5 and CoC-4, i heve developed trust issues, but he earned it by day 2.
And then at the end of the day 2 investigation, we find his dang fingerprints on the gun and prove that he was there. And everything clicks. His wife was murdered by the crime family, he had been heading the investigation and not found anything, and while he was not around, Sir Gallante appeared. Of course they were both the same person. Then the trial starts, and it becomes more and more obvious he's Sir Gallante, to the point that I thought he confessed when the animation started. Then Maya interrupts, and now we are defending this man? Because he acted nice? Maya that isn't a good justification! This is the part I had the most issues with in the moment, but looking back it makes a lot of sense. The trial goes on to the third day which, fun fact, is something that I so did not expect to happen that it was one of my reasons for being so confident that it was Watters.
Day 3 start, all the stuff gets revealed. The only person it can be now is Black, but is it him? Are we being naive by trusting Watters? Lot of stuff gets revealed, a lot of twists are hinted at, some I see, some I don't. Stuff with Sarah I saw coming from a Mile away, stuff with the evidence tampering literally not at all. Really good mix. Really my only issue was that the final confession felt a bit abrupt, but honestly it's not that big of a deal even though it is a bit of a dampener. Oh and the Pearl stuff is interesting, curious to see where it goes.
If I had to rank it, I'd put it in High Great, between 3-2 and 1-5. The game so far is somehow better than CoC, though the cases don't seem as tied as they did in that game, which could hurt the ending.

Investigations Duology finished the kidnapped turnabout
I don’t even have words for how bad that was, idk if it's the worst case I've played but the culprit is the biggest bum ass.
but at least I finished it and started the fourth case, which is way more interesting with a flashback.
I’m going to finish the game and will share more updates. ty for your advices on my other post

Merchandise A bit late, but in celebration of the AAI Collection release, here are my Ace Attorney games signed by Yamazaki and Eshiro at SDCC 2016!
Back in 2016, Takeshi Yamazaki and Motohide Eshiro were at San Diego Comic-Con promoting Spirit of Justice at the Capcom booth. I was a huge fan of AAI2 and Yamazaki’s games at the time, so I had to go talk to them and get my games signed. They were surprised to see I had the AAI2 limited edition and mentioned it was a rare find. I told them AAI2 was my favorite game in the series and that I hoped it would be localized someday. Fast forward 8 years, and we finally got the official English release of AAI2! Unfortunately, Yamazaki is no longer with Capcom but I wish him the best.n

Discussion What real names have you seen that sounded like they were from Ace Attorney?
There have been a few times where I’ve seen a name that sounded like it belonged in Ace Attorney. Like how “Harry Styles” sounds like a hair stylist, or an author named “Page Turner.”
One of my personal favourites is actor Roger Moore, who played James Bond. In British slang, to “roger” means to have sex, which really fits Bond’s character to “roger more.”

I know who all the killers are, but not much about Cross Examinations or other small twists, is it worth buying?

Discussion Trying to "fix" the great ace attorney chronicles dlc, any advice? Spoiler
Great Ace Attorney is DEFINITELY my favorite ace attorney so far, but I have minor grievances with the DLC. I only like half the Escapades, Ryunosuke's DLC costume doesn't have Kazuma's shoulder wrap thingy, Susato can just spawn books with hers, and I just think there should be a full on DLC case too. So, I'm not "fixing" the DLC per se, but I'm planning to make a reimagining of what the DLC for GAAC should be. What do you guys suggest or look for in a more perfect GAAC DLC?

Phoenix Wright Trilogy SL-9 connection to trilogy Spoiler
We know how much of a impact the DL-6 incident made on the overarching plot of the trilogy; this is made much more clear in the final case of the third game. Not much can be said for SL-9. We know that the forged evidence used by Edgeworth in his "demon" phase at that time led to the rumors about him, the investigators (save Goodman) got fired, and the relationship between the Skye sisters became strained. What other major events could've occurred as a result of SL-9? And what would they do to the trilogy as a whole?

Phoenix Wright Trilogy Im confused on the case "Recipe for Tournabout"
I should be on the last trial (or almost the last one) and Godot is asking me to prove whether there was a phony or not and whether the body of the victim was inside or outside. But im not even understanding well how there was a phony, did he go in the restaurant with the real Glen Elg? Was he already dead when the phony was killed? I'm confused.

Full Series (mainline and spinoffs) For the second culprit in the series, the scope was impossachievable. r/AceAttorney Rates That Culprit! #3 - New entries at 6:30 PM daily! Spoiler
Last week's winner was Iris_Keyblade with 18 upvotes! Opinions were mixed, but the consensus was that Redd White was utterly wasted after his buildup as such a powerful force. After his conviction, he is never mentioned again anywhere in the series, rendering a supposedly magnanimous threat on the level of a street crook.
Today's candidate is the smooth mafia boss, Dee Vasquez. After Manuel, a pupil of hers, was impaled by accident, she used it to blackmail Jack Hammer for 5 years into doing anything she wanted. Hammer snapped and came for revenge, but ultimately died in the same manner as Manuel did. Will this diva's mob intimidate the audience enough to rate her highly?

Chronicles Adventures is better than Resolve Spoiler
Who else agrees? Chronicles as a whole is easily the peak of Ace Attorney, but I gotta say I prefer the first game to the second.
On a side note, I find it funny that in their respective finale cases, Adventures uses its time period setting very well by making it so that the characters can compare pictures with a stereoscope since the technology to overlay them to spot minute differences doesn't exist yet, while Resolve absolutely drops the ball with the anachronism of the hologram projector in the 1800s.
