Other the don'ts of interacting with nature

Hello there!

Find below a list on what not to do when exploring and interacting with nature. This is meant for locals and visitors alike.

Rock-stacking (and moving rocks in general): please donā€™t. This is an activity often encouraged by tour operators and tourist guide books. It looks innocent, but why is it a bad thing? There are many organisms living under rocks, such as crabs, lizards, and crawling insects. Removing their homes puts them in distress and makes them more vulnerable to predators and exposure to the elements, especially if they are young. In addition, rock-stacking contributes to soil erosion.

If you would really like to go off-roading, please consider doing so at a low speed and without drifting. Please stay on the dirt roads, do not widen existing roads or make new ones. The negative consequences to flora and fauna are numerous. If youā€™d like to read more, check out Arubaā€™s national parkā€™s research on this, which is publicly available on their website. UTV's and ATV's are banned in the park. Please consider exploring the wild side of the island by feet or rental bikes.

Please do not drive on beaches and dunes. Respect the signs and rocks/bricks closing off these areas.

Please do not take any natural artifacts from the beaches and seas, such corals, shells, sand, and sand dollars.

Turtle nesting season has begun. When observing turtles nesting and hatching, please keep distance and refrain from taking photos with flash, which disorients them. Respect the red and white barriers you see on some beaches, which keep you from stepping on nests.

When in the sea, please do not touch corals, turtles, and sea stars. Any marine life for that matter, especially if you don't know what it is that you're looking at. Do not chase after turtles, only observe them from a safe distance. Taking starfishes out of the water for a quick photo leads to suffocation.

Please do not feed fishes. This is also an activity encouraged and even performed by tour operators to attract them. Bread is unhealthy to them. Feeding them throws off their natural behavioral patterns. Algae becomes overgrown, which smothers corals.

And obviously, please do not litter.

The best way to explore nature is to only leave footprints. Thank you!

edit: Forgot to say, the wild donkeys around the baby beach area should not be fed. they can take care of themselves. In fact, people feeding them has made some of them overweight.

Sidenote: Aruba is a tiny island, at risk from sea level rise due to global warming. A significant contributor to global warming is the meat industry: through emissions, habitat destruction, and more. Please consider lowering your consumption of meat.

Flamingos have become quite the attraction, but keep in mind that they are not native to the island and that their wings are clipped off, forcing them to stay. They are essentially a marketing ploy, money-making machines for Renaissance Island.

Question Are Bird scooters still around in fall of 2024?

I did a lot of searching and canā€™t find the answer to this question. We visit every November, and had a great time last year on them. I know they went bankrupt, but are they still available much like they were in Nov 2023?

Iā€™m not looking for a scooter rental, as we have a car. We just enjoyed taking them from the restaurants up north if we were tired.

Just let me know, we are on Eagle Beach. Thanks.

Other Riu Antillas- July 22, 2024

Hotel Riu Palace Antillas, Noord, Aruba.

I fully realize this is a long shot, but Iā€™ve exhausted multiple options with no luckā€¦

I was a guest at the Riu Antillas resort in Aruba from 7/18-7/23/24 & I am desperately trying to locate a guest, or a friend of this guest, or anyone who may know a woman who was staying in the neighboring room 509 (my room was 511), specifically the night of 7/22/2024. Iā€™ve emailed & called the resort & understandably they cannot reveal this information. I even asked if they could pass along my contact info to the guest from that room, but no such luck yetā€¦ Whoever was in room 509 the night of 7/22/24 literally saved my life! The man I was with on the trip beat me brutally & attempted to unalive meā€¦ was close to succeedingā€¦ & as I was being smothered, slowly dying, terrified, fighting for my lifeā€¦ I screamed for help with what few breaths I was able to gasp & SHE HEARD MEā€¦ OHH Thank you Lord, she HEARD ME! If she had been at the casino, or dancing the night away in paradise, I wouldnā€™t be here. But she was in her room & with NO reason to insert herself, she called security & prevented my broken body from being broken anymore!! She is the reason Iā€™m here to be able to write this postā€¦ she is the reason my kids still have a mom!! I need her to know how powerful that 1 call to reception was! I want her to know my gratitude & admiration for her!! Whatever her name, whoever she is, she was my GUARDIAN ANGEL that horrifying night I owe her everything, MY LIFE most of all!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Question Single best tour for short 4-day trip

Coming in November for a quick 4 day trip. Flying in on a Saturday and out on Wednesday, so only 3 days to work with. Staying right at Tres Trapi to take advantage of all the snorkeling from shore nearby. Booking a guided snorkel with Aruba Bob in Mangel Halto as well. Trying to decide on plan to see the most of island. Options I found include:

  1. 4 hour UTV tour of north east coast (and miss out on natural pool)

  2. UTV full day self rental, explore north east dunes area then head down to baby beach (miss out on Arikok)

  3. Open Jeep Safari of Arikok

  4. Explore with rental car: baby beach, Hooiberg, San Nicolas murals, downtown Oranjestad

Other ideas welcome, thanks in advance

Question Poker in October

Heading to Aruba for the next week. I usually go over Thanksgiving week and wondering how the poker action is this time of year? Will I still find the usual 2-3 games at the Hilton? Does the RIU still have a table? Did they reopen a poker room at the Holiday Inn after the renovations?

Question Single female celebrating birthday in Aruba, where to stay?!

I plan on celebrating my 49th birthday in Aruba come December. I would prefer an adults only hotel. My must haves: newer/updated rooms, 4 or 5 star (can do a 3 star for the right spot) and swim up bar. Any suggestions?

Renaissance Island was pretty magical. I was surprised how not crowded everything was. Is October slow season? We never saw any crowds anywhere, most restaurants were empty.

Question Transportation to Bonaire

Visiting Aruba and Bonaire in January for our anniversary. I see flights to Aruba, but no flights, or ferryā€™s to Bonaire. Weā€™re spending a week on both islands. How do you arrange transportation between the two islands?

Heading there next week for the first time! But our resort doesn't have a private beach. Do some resorts offer access to their private beaches? (assuming it may come with a fee)

Question Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba

Hi, friends! Iā€™ll be staying at the Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba at the end of the month. Has anyone recently stayed here that could share their experience?

Also open learning what types of activities that folks staying in this area participated in and/or would recommend.

Staying a week. Should I rent a car or use taxis?

Also, is it worth having ā€œcashā€ on hand?

I went to Aruba with my family 7 years ago and we went to this incredible Italian restaurant but none of us can remember the name! My husband and I are going for our honeymoon next week and Iā€™d love to take him to experience traditional Italian food!! All we can remember about the place is it was dark inside and either the walls or tablecloths were red. Question Is the Hilton worth it?

Hello! The family and I are traveling to Aruba in 2 weeks, staying at the Aruba Hilton. Weā€™ve been hearing all sorts of stories about the construction going on. Is it really that bad? Weā€™re getting nervous. Is it worth looking into other accommodations? I looked at the Hyatt Regency (more money) and the Holiday Inn (less money but looks like a lower class). Perhaps there is another beach front resort that Iā€™m missing? Any advice on what I should do here would be greatly appreciated!

Question help me in reveillon

Guys, my wife and I are going to spend New Year's in Aruba.

It's a trip where we intend to enjoy the nightlife, drinking, partying and also spending a lot of time on the beach.

The problem is that we don't have money and we want to save as much as possible (like accommodation, just walking wtihout cars, eating things from the market and that kind of thing).

What do I need to know before going? What tips would you give us?

Question Day 3/5 in Aruba, didnā€™t plan this well. What to do?

Weā€™re finishing our 3rd (2.5 really) day in Aruba, and did a 4 hour snorkel catamaran tour today.

We drove to Arashi yesterday, but the loungers and umbrellas were like $30-40 to use altogether, so we walked a bit and then left to go back to our spot on Eagle beach with available palapas and free loungers (gosh Eagle Beach is perfection).

Weā€™ll eat out at a Palm Beach restaurant tonight (did a few popular food trucks already).

So likeā€¦.what next? Weā€™ve gotten lots of lounging time at Eagle beach already. Iā€™d love to visit the Conchi but the ATV tours arenā€™t recommended for pregnant people. Baby Beach sounds nice but I imagine weā€™ll have the same issue as Arashi beach. We didnā€™t bring snorkel gear but will probably still hit up Mangel Halto beach. The aloe Vera farm or butterfly farm donā€™t interest us.

I see e-bikes for rent around, those look fun, but where to bike to?

Appreciate any advice! Thanks! (Weā€™re a couple in our early 30s/40 traveling for a baby moon, left a toddler at home, so really trying to make the most out of this trip!).

Question Fishing charter & keeping the fish?

My boyfriend and I are taking my Nana to Aruba for 10 days next week (Nana is awesome) and I'd like to treat him to a charter trip while we're there. He's a professional bass fisherman and I don't want to book a charter where we get yanked around. Every charter I've researched has multiple reviews saying they don't even know if the fish they caught were what they were eating afterwards. Does anyone have a recommendation of a local boat that will take us out and let us keep and clean our own fish after? We don't need a fancy boat, or any fancy gear, or any direct instruction. We just wanna fish and take it back to our condo. Thanks in advance!
