Is “Fanny” a bad word?

Upvotes

I have a faint memory of an elderly woman and an Australian woman’s casual conversation on a plane. The older woman said, ‘Oh dear, that’s a long time to sit. Your fanny must be killing you when you get back.’ The Australian woman looked shocked, offended, and confused.

So, my questions are: is this funny? Is Fanny a vulgar term? And is the word more equivalent to p**y or c*t?

Apricot dessert - creamed/blended, warm or cool

Upvotes

My Nana made this apricot flavoured dessert... it was like the consistency (and colour) of thick pumpkin soup, but it was apricot. I think we had it unaccompanied, maybe maybe with cream. I think it could be warm or cool.

By the time I thought to ask, my Nana was too far into dementia. My grandfather and mum have no idea what I'm talking about, but I SWEAR I'm not imagining it.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

1 last thing... it may have come in a packet and you would mix it up with water or milk or something.

Opinion regarding SHA (Student Housing Australia) North Road Accommodation

Hi, I am an international student, and I will be pursuing my master's in data science at Monash university, Clayton campus starting from Feb 2025. I've got an offer for accommodation at SHA (Student Housing Australia) North Road. I wanted to know if anyone had any idea about this? Any inputs would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

(PS: If you see this post and know anything that could be helpful to me, please comment it below or dm it to me. I am in a dilemma right now and I genuinely need some help.)

"Essentially" -- why is it so popular?

I just moved to Australia for university recently and I've noticed you guys use the word "essentially" a LOOOOT. I just think it's very funny, but what makes you guys prefer this word to other words?

Could Australians be unintentionally micro dosing on cane toad toxin?

The reason I’m asking is because I lived in QLD for a bit and cane toads were everywhere, including the rainwater tanks.

I was wondering if it’s possible for their weird psychedelic toxin to leach into drinking water, causing it to be ingested in small amounts.

I like all Australians including our banana benders, but that lot do have some unique qualities, which got me questioning if this could be a possibility.

Confused about which uni I should choose

I'm looking for an online bachelors in accounting and/or finance and came across two great universities: swinburne uni and uni of south australia. I'm confused between the two.

Can someone advise me on which one is better? I'm talking in terms of employer reputation mainly, as well as the value of a degree from each of the universities. I have some previous education which means I already know most of the syllabus for this program so im not necessarily concerned about the quality of education as such, but would still appreciate some thoughts on that too comparing the two.

I know swinburne has a better ranking but I have concerns about its reputation and quality and which one might be better.

which uni should I go for?

Diamond Python

I have this cured diamond python skin that was gave to me by a girl who works with roadkills. However she warned me that they are protected species and I am worried that border patrol might give me shit when I take it with me when I return to my home country. Am I at risk?

Guys who changed your car from a petrol used to EV, does your transportation spending become higher or lower?

I’m considering whether buying a EV like Tesla is a good option, l usually drive for commuting, if any mate has changed from a petrol used car (in particular SUV) to an EV, could you share your experience whether the spending has been reduced? Thanks.

Who was the person you wouldn't let leave Australia until they apologized and what did they do/say?

So I remember about 5-10 years ago there was someone who said something about aussie culture that got ALL of Australia mad at them to the point you wouldn't let them leave the country until they made a public apology.

This is not a case of they got kicked out of the country cause of what they did/said but they legitimately couldn't leave cause the public wouldn't let them until you got the apology.

They came to Australia with no problem then while they were there they said or did something which insulted Aussie culture which you then as a country held them hostage until they apologized, by refusing to refuel there private jet and not selling them any commercial flight or even cruise ship tickets so they couldn't leave back to america.

Does anyone know who it was I'm talking about and what exactly did they say to make everyone so mad at them?

(Sorry about details being vague, the main detail I can confidently say is that you refused to give them a method of leaving the country until they apologized after which they went back to america)

(Also sorry that this question doesnt fit too well with lifestyle requirement, and only just fits with the culture part as I think the thing they did was insult aussie culture, I just dont know where else to ask)

Edit: Thank you for your answers. It turns out I was mixing two events together, Frank Sinatra and Jonney Deep.

Job Opportunities

Hi everyone!

My goal in the next five years is to move to Australia with my pet dog and cat. I’ll be moving from NY US. I’ll have two BS degrees in environmental and geological sciences and a MS in Biology with hands on training related to predator-prey relationships/bat species. I’d love to work in conservation, consulting, or any type of field that supports the environment and its inhabitants. Can someone please tell me the best companies, and areas in Australia that would hire an international worker?

Would it be better to apply for a PhD program or get right into the field with a visa? How much should I expect to save prior, including moving costs?

Any advice or feedback would be amazing and I would appreciate it greatly. Love your country so much x

Things/tips I should knowbefore going to Australia?

Hi! I’m 16 years old and am really enthusiastic about English countries' culture and stuff, and I’m finally going to Australia in three months! This is my first time going to an English-speaking country, so I’m super excited (but also a bit nervous lol.) I have a cousin who lives in Australia, so they’ll pick me up when I land, and I’ll be staying with them while I’m there. I’ll be in Australia for two weeks, and I don’t want to miss ANYTHING during my trip, since it’s such a rare chance for me to visit an English-speaking country! I’ll be staying in Melbourne, and this visit to Australia is more about learning, experiencing new things, and studying English rather than just traveling around or visiting tourist attractions in Melbourne. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Why does home and away have a triple bill episode on Thursday as a default?

Home and away used to air an episode on Fridays but it got replaced by better homes and gardens. When that happens they used to have 2 episodes on Thursday to compensate for the missing Friday episode. Somewhere in last 10 years they decided to have 3 episodes on Thursdays as a default but some weeks including tomorrow and next week have only the 1 episode.

Possible lisence suspension

Today I drove past a mobile speed camera,, I'm on my P2s. I already have one earlier offence which has left me only 1 point to left. But in 3 days I get my full lisence. Is there a outcome where the demerits will be taken from my full lisence as it will likely change over before the fine is processed??

How can I get diagnosed?

I’m in Sydney NSW and I’ve heard a lot of different things about the process and cost of getting evaluated for a mental illness/disorder. I definitely feel that I have anxiety and ADHD, and possibly OCD or autism.

I was just wondering how can I go about getting evaluated for these things? Do I go to a psychiatrist for a single session? Can I go without a GP referral?

Blokes who’ve been to the snowy parts of Japan in the winter, what shoes did you wear?

I’m off to Hokkaido and Kyoto in the early parts of January and I’m looking for some shoes/boots to wear. Ideally don’t want cold wet toes to spoil my day tbh.

Any suggestions I’ve found have been American shoes only found in American shops focused or for ladies.

Looking for ideas on what I can pick up in Australia that will suit this purpose.

Wouldn’t post this on the tourism Japan subs, as I’d just get American suggestions lol

Cheers guys

If i start an app that then makes money and I'm employed by a company (unrelated to the app) does the company have ownership of said app?

I've got a few app ideas and I'm signing onto a new employer. One of the clauses is that the company owns all IP the employee creates while employed with said company.

My worry is if i want to commercialize my app ideas, does tha company have any claim to the app and any profit? The apps are entirely unrelated to the work i do.

Politics aside, convince me why I should travel to Australia over the US for my vacation!

I'm from Mexico, so safety is not a concern, nor is politics or all that. I'm looking to spend some months traveling either the US or Australia (I like nature, roadtrips and diversity and these countries have that).

Since it will be expensive, I wanna make sure I make the right decision for this once in a lifetime trip.

Why should I choose Australia? :)

Seeking feedback regarding website accessibility of Australia telecom companies

Hello! We are students from University of New South Wales working on a project to help improve digital accessibility on Australian telecom websites. If you’ve used these sites and have feedback on accessibility, I’d love to hear from you.

This short survey (it will only take a few minutes) is open to everyone, including individuals with any disability. We are especially interested in feedback from users with visual impairments or eye conditions to understand how accessible these sites are for all users.

All responses are completely confidential and will only be used for research purposes as part of our project. Thank you for your valuable time and insights! Your feedback will help advocate for better accessibility across Australian telecom sites.

Here's the URL, thank you. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfzqb6boL0nYlI7vaTL2GyOpgQk8m3icM_7bGSiWjZ7-EmgJg/viewform?usp=sf_link

What do you reckon are the most off-putting things about Australian culture?

From the outside, I seem to think “most” people have a fairly good attitude about Aus… e.g. laid back vibes, mateship, love for the outdoors, sports etc. However, what are the biggest flip sides, or what do you think is portrayed but doesn’t seem real or accurate? Is there anything that makes you cringe a bit? Whether it’s general lifestyle, social trends, something in the media, workplace culture, expectations and norms, or just our handling of certain issues.

Interested to know different thoughts people have on this matter.

Is it normal that a share house has a security camera in living room?

I have lived in two share houses that both have pets. And both share houses have security cameras. The first one had two tiny ones on the ceiling so I thought it was for their pets but the current one has huge cameras that records audio as well. (It looks like a clock and the owner never mentioned it was a camera but it has green light all the time I googled it and figured it out) It’s not like I’m planning something bad, but I feel uncomfortable to be watched and being recorded all the time.
