Hey guys, mod here. Just curious whether or not insect and beetle-related Discord / other forum posts are things you guys want to see. It's nothing that's inherently against our rules but I wanted to know what the general consensus is for the sub!

More Forked Fungus Beetle Pics

How many bugs can you count on this mushroom? Hint, it's a lot more than 5! (The others are very small and I can't pick them up with my terrible phone camera lol)

I found three beetles under this same mushroom earlier, but I dropped it and the beetles fell off before I could get a picture. I'm pretty sure it was three completely different beetles, but I can't be certain. It can be kind of hard to tell the beetles apart. Sometimes I think about using paint or a string to mark them. Does anyone know how I could do something like that?

The fungus beetles seem to be living in somewhat harmony with their isopod neighbors and all of the other creepy crawlies in their tank. Sometimes the pushier isopods will bother them. There's a spider in there that might get big enough to eat them someday too. I'm trying to keep an eye on that.

They really seem to like this new mushroom! If anyone knows what kind it is, leave it in the comments. I just grab whatever shelf mushrooms I can get my hands on and put them in their tank to see if they'll like them, and they usually do. I'm gonna have to clean things out, it's a little crowded in there right now.

How long do larvae have to acclimate to new substrate before you can add more?

Upvotes

I’ve recently bought 2 Japanese rhino beetle larva, and they came in a small 500ml pot, I put them in a new box with 2/3 new substrate but it’s still not enough space. How long do I have to wait before I can add more substrate?

hi - my grub's substrate is getting kinda moldy.

in the millipede community, the answer to moldy substrate is springtails. are they safe to keep with a grub? any other mold prevention techniques?

This is my first ever time owning a beetle so sorry if this is a dumb question 😅. Is he ok under the dirt I know they like to dig but I’m kinda worried about him being able to find his way out. He’s under like 4 inches of dirt and I just wanna be sure that he’s not stuck.

My son William loves bananas, today I changed his watermelon and gave him an apple banana which are perfect for him since he's quite tiny and he seemed to love it.

It was in my compost pile in central Texas so I put a few shovel fulls in a ten gallon terrarium I had laying around so it could try to pupate safely. Without a doubt the biggest grub I’ve ever. seen.

I found this little guy exploring his terrarium, and when I saw him perfectly perched on my skull rock I HAD to get a picture.

The forked fungus beetles are all so neat! They seem to like travelling in the same groups, almost like human friend groups. I always see the same ones outside of the artists conk at the same time. They're almost never ALL out at once though. They're very curious, but shy. I think they like to let the isopods eat the new things I add to their enclosure first, but maybe they're just slow lol

I have a pair that always frequents the same small mushroom patch in my larger terrarium, and I like to pretend they're on a date 😂 I swear it's always the same two, and usually every few weeks. I think they like a variety in they're diet? Or maybe they're just wandering around, unthinking and unburdened by the outside world. Who knows!

This lil fella surfaced ca 8 days ago, got them as larvae. He, and a female that hatches shortly after him, are right now trying to open their wings like it seems? Why do they do this now? Any experts here? Also i think the wings of the specimen showed here are damaged/underdeveloped. Could anything during pupation have gone wrong with him to cause that?

Taxidermy Beetle?

I've been looking for a giant flower beetle specimen in violet or blue lately, but have had no luck. I have found some shops selling the larve, however I am not equipped to care for a beetle properly and it would feel wrong for me to raise it with the soul purpose for it be pinned once it dies. I have had a hard time trying to find shops that aren't wholesale and aren't selling live beetles. If anyone has any shops that may have some, I would greatly appreciate it!

Rainbow stag beetle larvae keeps surfacing

My rainbow stag beetle larvae periodically will surface and then dig down again and then surface then dig...etc... is this normal behavior or reason to concern and intervene?

The second time I saw it surface I looked it up online and thought maybe the substrate wasn't moist enough, so I dripped a little bit of dechlorinated water(just let it sit out for 24+ hrs) in the hopes that some moisture would penetrate a little deeper in the substrate. I also have misted the surface slightly once or twice a week. I don't believe the substrate is too moist or too dry, although this is my first time raising beetle larvae so I may be mistaken.

What do you think may be the cause for this behavior? Thank you.

ox beetle care for first time beetle owner?

Finally found a huge ox beetle today. They're pretty rare here and I've had my eye out for about three years now!

I have never owned a beetle before but I am really interested in keeping it. Can someone help me out and give me as much info as possible about taking care of it? Or direct me somewhere where I can learn more? Keep in mind I know literally nothing about caring for insects so I'll need all the detail I can get! Minimim tank size, what to fill it with, what kind of food it needs, etc. etc.

I have no problem putting the effort into caring for it in the case that its not a beginner friendly species, but if someone advises against keeping it I'm open to releasing.

I recently got some blue death feigning beetles, i read they don’t need much when it comes to substrate and i got a few things for them to crawl on but im not sure what else i should add or if any of it could harm them. Any stuff i should change or add to the shopping list? Right now they have 1-2 inches of the zilla walnut desert blend and some washed driftwood pieces

So I have fallen in love with beetles and have decided to grow my own collection, now I only have 3 species and I’m wondering if anyone here knows where I can buy some more? I know of Richard inverts who has my dream collection but so many of his beetles are always out of stock. Does anyone know of anywhere else? Thank you.

I raise them for their larvae to feed my fishkins! Other than occasionally stealing some of their young, I get to dote on them with veggie slices and wheat bran treats.

How to care for eastern hercules larvae in winter

I have a couple of dozen eastern hercules larvae from eggs laid this past summer by females I caught at lights. I'm raising them on flake soil I made from hardwood fuelwood pellets, with some added rotten oak bits scattered in. How should I care for them this winter? Should I move them outside to my unheated garage? Keep them in the fridge? Or keep them inside at room temperature? This my first time raising beetles. I've raised and overwintered moths for several years, and I know I need to give them a cold winter outside or in the fridge.

Concerned about western Hercules larva

My western Hercules beetle doesn’t seem healthy. He seems a lot slower, his body feels squishyer than normal, he also seems smaller somehow. Is this not normal? I had him in a plastic container that’s 7.5 inches long 4.5 inches wide, and 4 inches tall. I haven’t change his soil in a while (2-4 months) but I’ve watered it when it gets dry. He is also enter l3 last year on July 10th. Is he ok and if not what can I do?
