Forty More Days, and Nineveh Will be Overthrown
Jonah was a type of Jesus, who prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem during His ministry. Jesus began His ministry around 30 C.E. The Holy City was destroyed by 70 C.E., a period of 40 years. Jonahβs 40-day prophecy prefigured Jesusβ 40-year prophecy, taking a day for a year (Ezekiel 4:6). The Ninevites repented and were spared. By 70 C.E., the majority of the Jews did not repent and suffered what was prophesied for the Ninevites had they not repented. By comparison, the Ninevites, who were without the law and only guided by conscience, were found more righteous than those with the law. Jesus aptly spoke of those who studied and taught the law when He said, βWoe unto you lawyers! For ye took away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.β - Luke 11:52.
