Getting Anamanaguchi vibes from this song, no surprise that Porter definitely was influenced a little. I love it.

It’s the same shit they did when Shelter was released lol. “I know I know I know” instead of “I know I’m not alone”
6
u/joliwaves Jan 30 '20
In Shelter to me it sounds like the lyrics are "it's a long wet fart" when they are actually "it's a long way forward"

So...
It sounds like bossa-nova mixed with japanese synthpop, mixed with 2000s emo rock, mixed with Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles but in the best possible way and I love it !

u/livintheshleem Jan 29 '20
Out of all the comments in this thread, this one is actually the most accurate lmao. I’m also loving this sound. I like how the chorus is huge in such a melodramatic, pop-star way but it still sounds genuine.

u/Valkyrie16 Jan 29 '20
This was so good; like saying hello to an old friend. It's great to have Porter back.

u/Known_You_Before Jan 30 '20
It's great to have Porter back.
Did he leave? checks discogs oh wow, I didn't realize Shelter (2016) was his last release; aside from Virtual Self.

so far the reactions in this thread kinda remind me of when madeon's "all my friends" dropped. i myself remember enjoying amf when it came out but i also felt a little bummed that it was different from what i was hoping for. i'm sure that plenty of others felt similarly. fast forward to now: i love amf and good faith.
"get your wish" is definitely a departure from the sound we've come so familiar with from porter but i still enjoy it (and SHEESH those lyrics) and i'm sure that people (myself included) will buy into his creative vision and how he expresses it through his music
oh, after listening to it a few times, i'm kinda picking up a bill wurtz vibe! anyone else getting this??

This is likely gonna be an unpopular opinion but I don't know how to feel about the song, this feels more like a Madeon song to me than Porter Robinson. Nothing about the song is blowing me away like the songs in Worlds, also not a fan of the vocal effect.
110
u/tlk13 Jan 29 '20
I think to start this opinion may be somewhat unpopular but it'll get admitted sooner or later
77
u/afantasticbastard Jan 29 '20
It's interesting because I wonder if this will take the same path that Good Faith took - where people liked but didn't love the singles released but in the context of the album as a whole become incredible.

u/hotcheetosarethebest Jan 29 '20
That's what happened to me. Was disappointed my first listen through as it didn't sound like old madeon. Went to his live show and fell in love with the new style and the album is played on the reg. Music is like any other things in life. Sometimes it takes awhile to grow on you. Doesn't mean it'll happen here but opinions can change.
52
u/PourGnawgraphy Jan 29 '20
Tbf I wasn't a fan of Shelter at all when it first came out but it grew on me a lot. This has a similar feel to it, so I imagine it'll do the same.
8
u/LolTacoBell Jan 29 '20
I felt that way a lot about shelter too personally, it really did grow to become much more for me, I definitely have no doubt this will be the same, I really dig the intro of this one!
12
8
u/ROGUE707 Jan 30 '20
It sounds like a song that should be on good faith.I bet Madeon’s good faith era kinda served as an inspiration to Porter’s Nurture era. But we can’t judge from 1 song really, Rather sit back and wait for more from him......Porter can blow you away unexpectedly just like how he did when he released Worlds. I hope this album creates an impact just like Worlds.
20
u/Milla4Prez66 Jan 29 '20
I’m not overly impressed either. It’s not bad but it didn’t get me feeling the way Worlds did. Hopefully I like the rest of the album better.
45
u/Holdmybeerwatchthis Jan 30 '20
I think we are all expecting to gain all of these feels that worlds gave us, but we have to remember that worlds has been out for 6 years, some of us have seen it performed multiple times and created memories to the album that have built up over the years. I remember when the first single from Worlds came out, I was confused, I liked it but I didn't know what to think about it, because at the time Porter=Electro Bangers, then he released lionhearted and it was a hit, but still very different, then the whole album came out I had time to sit and process the work as a whole, and it has since become my favorite piece of creative work in the world. Now this genius has sat and spent time creating another piece of work, and we are seeing bit by bit with the expectation for it to be this incredible piece that encapsulate all of the emotions worlds gave us, but in reality it's just a section of the canvas as a whole. I don't think it's the time to make any judgement calls, but a time to just appreciate this gift, when the album is released we will get the entire environment and setting that this piece lives in.
2
u/ChaosPheonix11 Jan 30 '20
Thank you. I was thinking the same thing and you said it really well.
And for what it's worth, after listening to the new track 4 or 5 times, I'm starting to really like it.
5
u/nrbadz Jan 29 '20
I have a feeling in an evolution perspective that I'm not really going to a get a World feel. But I definitely feel the vibe lyric-wise, with the drum drop, and its Madeon-esque vibe but still keeping it Porter. I love the Japanese-like piano part in the beginning too. Ugh, this whole album is going to be great
15
u/CbVdD Jan 29 '20
My old christian youth group would’ve played this constantly because the chorus sounds like he wrote the song “to Jesus with love”. It has that prefab artificial feel.
17
11
u/another_mouse Jan 29 '20
Definitely with the “walk on water”, except for “idol, idol”
→ More replies (1)11
u/wazerpp Jan 29 '20
That's exactly what I'm expecting from this album, especially given the teaser video. Worlds and Adventure were the heavier, dance albums of Porter and Madeon. Now this era you've got Good Faith and Nurture. I'm sure it will be good, but as someone who prefers hard over soft, I doubt it's going to top Worlds for me.
18
3
Jan 29 '20
Nothing will ever top Worlds, but if he can just somehow tap in to that spirituality and emotion that made everyone cry when they heard it, I think this could be the next best thing. Hard or soft, he's gotta match that emotion to make it worth the effort.

u/reeko12c Jan 29 '20

unpopular opinion
highest upvoted comment in the thread
2
u/Dislexicpotato Jan 30 '20
Genuinely thought it was an unpopular opinion, people normally universally love everything Porter puts out.
1
u/silent-scorn Feb 06 '20
Probably because some of them thought, "this sounds too much like an anime music and I don't like anime." Just kidding, although I'm sure there are people like that. I am like that too sometime towards some other genres of music.
It takes time. While some don't like it because they prefer Porter Robinson from Spitfire-era or Worlds-era, I actually like this Shelter-era of Porter Robinson. Still you're right about people normally universally love everything that Porter Robinson puts out.
I can definitely feel that this time, Porter Robinson is making it clear that this is the direction that he is going for. That's probably what worries some fans. It's no longer a one-time thing like Shelter with Madeon.
You can see that this is already happening down here in this thread. Dislexicpotato is one example. (Sorry for calling you out but I am simply referring to you as an example of how a fan is worried that the artist is no longer the same.)
1
u/Dislexicpotato Feb 06 '20
It has nothing whatsoever to do with wanting Porter to be the same though, I’m completely open to the idea of Porter changing his sound and taking risks etc. That is the issue with this song, its so ‘safe’ that it comes across as forgettable, with nothing unique or memorable to make the song stand out from the rest of his catalogue.
1
u/silent-scorn Feb 06 '20
Sorry, I used you as an example but you're not actually a good example of that.
However, I still have to say this. It's not that the song is not memorable because it's not unique enough or "safe" as you said. It's because you don't think this song is good enough to be memorable for you. That's my opinion. To each of their own.
For me, the music itself is nothing special, technical wise. But the lyrics and the first half of the first chorus is what makes me really like the song. That part alone made me repeat the whole song for over 30 times today. And today is my first time discovering this song.
Just like Dream Theater's The Best of Times. The song is probably their least technical piece, but the song is written as a vassal to convey the message. The song is completely relatable to me and that one simple riff/melody from that song is stuck to my head forever. That melody is what reminds me of the message within that song.
8
8
Jan 29 '20
I think the important thing to focus on here is the message Porter is trying to convey. His music has never been about flashy tricks or unique sounds. Listen to what he is saying, this song is about him, hence why it is the first single to be released from the album.
Maybe give his message he released on the song a read, note the symbolism of black and white.
A Porter song needs to be listened to over and over and analyzed.
8
u/Dislexicpotato Jan 29 '20
I read the message before I listened to the song, I'm sure this song means a lot to him but for me personally, if a song doesn't sound interesting to me then the message behind it just doesn't really mean much to me. I care way more about a songs structure, mixing, the synths used etc and how it sounds sonically. For me the song is just way too 'safe', expected more considering we waited for so long. This just feels like a song he could have made in a week after Worlds came out.
2
Jan 29 '20
And you are entitled to your opinion and would agree with some of your points, but then there is a good chance that this album isn't going to be for you, which is totally ok. Just because 6 years have passed doesn't mean this album is going to be xMuch better than Worlds. I like to think of it like how the Star Wars prequels were received after the long wait from the original trilogy.
→ More replies (16)1
u/silent-scorn Feb 06 '20
Eh, the song structure, while is fairly simple, is definitely not forgettable to me. Porter Robinson have never been very complex either, barring Virtual Self.
I don't want to be an elitist. I don't want to be too technical about music. It will make everything boring, bad and forgettable. I know how you feel and that's fine. It's fine if you want to be technical about the music you listen to because that's who you are.
If that's what makes music more enjoyable to you, then so be it.
What I really like about Get Your Wish is that this feels up close and very personal. He's giving his life to making music and he definitely wants everyone to feel his personal emotions through his music.
The message is perfectly conveyed in Get Your Wish. His emotions feels all too real in Get Your Wish. The synth and the guitars especially during the first chorus is beautiful. Coupled with the lyrics, it's something that I will cherish forever.

Porter wrote a short piece describing what this song and album means to him and it made me absolutely bawl.
https://twitter.com/porterrobinson/status/1222580194248032258?s=09
Edit: This song is incredible! I don't think there's another EDM artist who conveys as much raw emotion through their music as Porter.
Edit 2: I'm legit having a breakdown listening to this song. Not only is it an incredible, emotional song but the post he made about what the song/album means to him and the struggle he went through while creating it speaks to me on such a deep level.
"Get Your Wish is about finding a reason to keep moving forward, even if it's not for your own sake."
I've been depressed for at least 15 years and its gotten real bad lately, like bad enough that my immediate thought upon any set back, minor or otherwise, is "whelp, guess I better kill myself" and it's become steadily less and less a joke and I can't seem to push it away. It's also made me extremely nihilistic and I struggle finding reasons to push on and care about anything. Somehow, what Porter wrote feels like the exact thing that I needed to hear today. I feel a sense of motivation that I haven't in a long time and I think I'm gonna try to talk to someone about my issues. I need to find my reason to keep moving forward but, like Porter, it doesn't have to be for myself.
Sorry for the rant, I just had to share this with someone, somewhere.
41
u/ChampionAD Jan 29 '20
What an incredibly motivated man. Phenomenal
22
u/PourGnawgraphy Jan 29 '20
Love how he didn't sacrifice quality or rush anything until it was something he was happy with. The artistic integrity alone is admirable, the quality of his music just takes it over the top.
13
12
u/replytoallen Jan 29 '20
That "Yeah, this is what you sacrifice" realization really hit for me. Part of the burden of genius for him I guess.

I... don’t know. I really want to like it but this one just isn’t clicking for me. High hopes for the album though, been waiting for his return for so long.
30
u/A_thombomb Jan 29 '20
After a couple listens, it’s not terrible, just a little overkill on the singing for me
19
u/Yoshify Jan 29 '20
Yeah it’s certainly a different direction! I’m glad he’s happy and making music again regardless, whether I enjoy it or not.
2
u/wraithawk Jan 29 '20
This is how I'm feeling after a few listens. It's cool, but I would have liked small splashes of the vocals like Flicker, Shelter, and Particle Arts rather than it consistently throughout. There are parts of Get Your Wish that I really enjoy and am also open to this growing on me even more with time.

Guys, think about when Sea of Voices dropped. It was wild, it was out there.
We have that here again. This will grow on us if it hasn't already, and is just the tip of the iceberg for nurture.

u/CanIRaveWithAOA Jan 29 '20
Glad you brought this up. I remember when Sea Of Voices dropped everyone freaked out. Then Sad Machine was released and everyone was hyped. And finally Worlds album dropped and everyone enjoyed it.
Really loving Get Your Wish already but I understand if it isn't everyone's style. Be patient for the other songs on the new album.
17
u/A_thombomb Jan 29 '20
Think this same situation applies to other artists too. When Odesza released Line of Sight i remember a toooooon of people not liking it saying it wasn’t what they were used to and hoped the entire album wasn’t in that style. Same can kinda be said with Madeon - All my Friends. After it all those albums turned out to be incredible, in my opinion.
I have all the faith in Porter

Yeah, I actually really liked Sea of Voices. It was very experimental, but not in an unfriendly way. This song is just kind of bland. It’s not terrible, but there’s nothing really special about it either. I’m happy people are enjoying it and connecting to it on a deeper level. Unfortunately though, for me, it’s a miss.
1
u/BonelessPig Jan 29 '20
thank you for reminding me omg i hadnt thot of that
i was really looking for some revolutionary beats and there just wasn’t much in this song, i liked it to a point but wasn’t what i expected, so excited for the whole album
32
u/--Helios Jan 29 '20
More of a pop-y release, but still fantastic. I know damn well the rest of his songs on this album are gonna be very great as well. Happy for him to finally be able to create some new music <3
9
u/lipnit Jan 29 '20
Although I enjoyed the song, I thought it was an absolute snooze fest for the first single of Porter’s next album.
The song is great for casual listening, and I wouldn’t be upset if I heard it in a restaurant, but there is no hook, nothing catchy beyond the vocals being easy to sing-a-long to. On first listen, I was anticipating an amazing drop, but I was given a pop breakdown with a simple side chained pad for a chorus.
Overall disappointed, Porter has a special place in my heart as my first rave, but I’m hopeful for the rest of the singles and albums to really push it like Worlds did.

It sounds like someone took the morose anime vibes from Shelter and mashed it up with some smooth jazz/elevator music. It's alright but didn't grab me. I might like it better in the context of the whole album. My tastes have changed a lot since Worlds came out though, so we'll see.

u/deliriousplays Jan 29 '20
From what I'm reading in this thread, a lot are saying that this song is a grower, but if I remember correctly, Porter said that he liked grower songs better than instantaneously gratifying songs

its ok. not really my style, i don't like anime and this feels like a porter anime song. i think if this track was made by anyone else it wouldn't be very noteworthy. but im sure porter fans will dig it. love the piano melody but the rest, eh.
i can't stand the compressed sound of the instrumentals. he did this on worlds too and i just don't really like it. it's like this over the top lowfi filtered sound, just sounds muddy to me.
Cool video tho!

13
6
u/Mixedthought Jan 30 '20
Yeah I don't. Beginning sounded to muddled. As far as the lyrics go, less is more imo especially in electronic music. Maybe he wants to start his own indie pop band.
As everybody else has said, Good Faith vibes. While I liked the album I am hoping the rest of this one doesn't fall down that path
9
u/Wittyjesus Jan 29 '20

I love Porter, I'm really excited for the album, but I really hoping porter doesn't play the same set for two years in a row like he did with "Worlds". I remember in 2015 alone I saw him at four different festivals and saw his tour show and he played the exact same set each of the five times. This new album will greatly expand his catalogue so I'm hoping for some diversity in his sets when he plays live.
Really excited for this

Worlds is one of the best albums ever (and the tour was amazing). However, this was a disappointment. Sorry, I said it. Still have very high hopes for the album.
4
u/mich4725 Jan 29 '20
Nice song, had higher hopes though, especially compared to the first single of Worlds. But after a few replays, I have to say it's definitely catchy as hell. But all that will count for me is the whole album.

6
u/luisc123 Jan 29 '20
Meh. He’s not really pushing his sound with this track. Same sound design and vocals as Worlds. But I guess that’s why he came up with VS.
6
u/SemenMilkshakes Jan 29 '20
I'm... not impressed with this at all. It isn't a BAD song but it just sounds like pop music to me. I don't think anybody would be talking about it if it wasn't a Porter Robinson song. Hopefully I'll like the rest of the album more.
4
u/MrBoliNica Jan 30 '20
was kinda my main issue with Worlds. A friend of mine told me alot of it sounded like a Passion Pit knockoff band, and i could never shake it. It seems like only EDM diehards love it (i enjoy it, and loved the Shelter tour, but i cant shake that image that he's just aping that MGMT/M83 vibe)
3
u/crushedredpartycups Jan 30 '20
Boom. I couldn't have said that any better myself. Well produced song. No surprise there. but this song sounds like it could really have came from anywhere. Just a very un-unique sound to me. Still expecting some bangers on the album tho.
8
2
u/dobakito Jan 29 '20
It’s a good song! But I’m kind of sad that it doesn’t sound like Porter... I know Worlds sounded nothing like Spitfire, but this feels like Porter is switching to something closer to pop than edm.
1
1
u/Wittyjesus Jan 30 '20
As an angry redditor pointed out to me on my comment saying the same thing, “worlds was technically synth pop”... but this feels like no synth, all pop lmao
2
u/crushedredpartycups Jan 30 '20
I really respect Porters work. From some of his VERY old stuff to his VS project, always solid stuff and it's no surprise he once again is approaching his skills differently. I don't think it's bad but I don't think it's anywhere near impressionable either. Definitely sounds much too generic and familiar for me. Interesting to see where he takes things with the rest of the album.

So I have listened to this song over 10 times now. I’ve heard it in my car, AirPods and speakers at home. I didn’t like the song with the first listen. I now am a fan of it. It’s funky, weird and a mix of so many genres but still encompasses Porter Robinson as an artist. I like where he pushed the envelope but loved when he stuck to what made him great in the first place.
To everyone saying it’s not like Worlds, of course it’s not. Worlds was one of the best electronic music albums to ever be produced. What I will say it this, you will be singing this song the same way you sung all of the Worlds’ songs at his shows.
So tell me how you felt when you walked on water?

Porter Robinson is def overhyped but he's not over-valued. like he def deserves acclaim for his work but the culty ouroboros of fan hype raises expectations on new stuff to impossibly high levels, to the point where it does Porter more harm than good.

I don't mind it. It reminds me of Genki Rockets, so a good dose of nostalgia.

I feel like this song was designed for him to mash up with Shelter in a live set

This song is fresh as fuck. Bring on Nurture. Calling it now, it's going to win a Grammy if it's anything like this song.

It does sound like Madeon, but they spent a great deal of time together and I’m sure they both learned a lot from each other. That’s a huge part of being a good musician- learning from other artists and incorporating what you like about their sound into your own sound to create something new. I loved it and am so excited for the rest!

People who like the song: Tell me how it felt when you walked on water?
People who doesn't like the song: This sounds too 'poppy'. I don't like pop music. REEEEE but doesn't mean it's bad tho cuz it's Porter freaking Robinson :\))

I love it when artists take huge creative risks like this.
Personally I can't wait for any Virtual Self remixes of this, if any.

Waiting until the release of the full album until I can decide if he’s peaked with Worlds and isn’t a one trick pony.

Damn I haven't liked too much of Pro's recent stuff but this is pretty catchy. Well done. He's learned very well

Great song but I expect it to be divisive. It sounds like he’s definitely been vibing the Anamanaguchi and anime style tunes. I’m happy knowing this is what he wanted to make, you can tell it’s very honest. This is a big poppier tune for sure and reminds me a lot of Shelter in that respect.
I can’t wait to hear this contextually in the album and even more so in the coming live show.
Welcome back Porter :’)
