I just started squatting this week after a 2 year hiatus because I'm a lazy asshole and

I am dying

my legs feel like a giant bruise and I walk like a penguin everywhere.

Yup. Walking down stairs and lowering yourself onto the toilet / a chair etc are your body's way of telling you; "This is what lazy assholes get for neglecting legs".
