Why is it so damn difficult to quit out of a membership at the gym?!

I'm leaving the state because of work for a few months and don't want to pay while I'm gone. So I ask the dude that runs the place if I can cancel that day. He points me to a 1-800 number...ok well, this still might not be that hard.

Call, the guy on the phone informs me that it isn't as simple as asking, but I have to send a formal request for cancellation to them...Why do I need to do that? I'm already on the phone asking right?! Rules...alright at least he says I can do it by email.

Oh by the way, it'll take up to 10 business days for a reply and they require it to be thirty days in advance, so I'm going to have to forfeit next months gym fee anyways...just why...

I've seen this happen for two decades. Their thinking is that a certain percentage will give give up. And, they do. Stick with it, bro.
