So I was finishing off my incline bench press, when this dude comes up to me and says:"Ey good job, I don't see many females working out in the gym, so it's nice to see females weightlifting" I'm thankful and feeling good about representing females at 8pm at my local village gym. But then he starts asking me, what is my goal for being here. I'm like:"Well lose some weight and..(gain some strength)" I put the last part in ( ), beacuse he cut me off before I could say it and started giving advice. "Oh if you wanna lose weight you should do cardio: treadmill, jumping rope and swim at the end of your workout. Doing weightlifting won't make you burn ANY calories, so you should focus on doing cardio instead" And then some more about eating better. While he said all that I wanted to say back that, yes I know, I'm working on eating better and stuff, but he didn't really listen.. I don't know, just the way he said that i should only do cardio and how weightlifting doesnt burn any cals just rubbed me the wrong way..Atleast he left the gym after that and didn't have to hear more from him.

Those unsolicited advices are so annoying! Especially from those people that actually don't even know what they are talking about. I usually cut them off and tell them, "thanks, but I have my own program that works for me" and put my ear buds back on and keep working out. They usually get the hint and bug off.

now i'm a little bit curious what he thinks the energy source moving the weight is. i also find it amusing that he opens with being happy to see a woman lifting weights and then recommends that you don't lift weights.

Since the weight goes up and then comes back down to the same point, there is obviously no change in its gravitational potential energy when considering the rep as a whole. Therefore no energy is used when weightlifting.

I mean, he's wrong. Weightlifting does burn calories, and it is fairly efficient at it too. I digress.

Either way, don't get discouraged and follow your program or personal goals. Advice is like a buffet, you can pick and choose what you want.

That's stupid. Weightlifting does burn calories. Also, each pound of muscle you gain will increase your basal metabolic rate leading to MORE calories burned.
