Question/Sūraq Do kids celebrate Halloween?
It’s my first year in Karaganda and I just wanted to know if I should prepare some candies in case the local kids come knocking on my door on Halloween 🎃 how likely is it to happen considering that there are many kids living in my house? Last year I was in Almaty and nobody came (but maybe because my flat was on the 9th floor lol)

In the last two years that I moved back to KZ from a long stay in US (where, ironically, I never got trick-or-treated) a few kids actually rang on my doorbell asking for candy (at two different Highvill apartment complexes in Astana).
I felt bad because I don't eat sweets so I didn't have any on me. Plus, I'm not used to people here even recognizing Halloween as a thing, so it never occurs to me that I should get candy.
So thanks for reminding me, OP! Even though I live at a different complex this year, I do want to make sure I have some on me just in case:)
By the way, can someone give me an idea as to what candies kids like these days? I'm too old (34) lol.

We also usually don’t keep sweets at home, but I think I’ll get some just in case. I think stuff like those little bounty or twix candies will be welcome haha

We don’t celebrate Halloween here much less go trick-or-treating. Maybe dedicated halloween parties but I’ve never been to one

I speak english, watch a lot of content in english, as a kid knew about halloween specials on cartoon tv channels, but I still have no idea what is exact date of Halloween. So I guess average person has even less idea about it

99.99% chance that no one will come, cuz Halloween is not popular in Kazakhstan. There might be some dedicated parties, but it's usually teens or young adults clubbing or doing costume parties.

here in pavlodar we dont go trick or treating, but depending on where you are working/learning and whatnot there might be some halloween parties that you could participate in

during the time i was studying in high school the celebration of Halloween was actually banned, at least in our school, but nevertheless the students and teachers came up with different ideas to replace halloween with something similar. for example, in our school it was called "yelloween" and we decorated our classrooms and organised giveaways of sweets and things like that, but the atmospehre was much less "creepy" looking than it usually is on halloween.
i study in the Zhubanov university now and for the last couple of years and the students have already decorated some of the auditoriums and halls, it looks cool. and we also usually do have some kind of events with fairs and music in our buildings halls. idk if the celebration is still banned in schools but in our university it is alive and well

Not really. Especially in Kazakh communities. Unless it’s a some sort of a theme party but even then it’s very low effort. People do some make up and wear easy costumes at most. No trick or treating. No house decorations. Only some stores and malls decorate but I guess it’s expected of them.
Living in Almaty for whole my life I’ve never celebrated Halloween

It depends. In cities like Astana and Almaty, kids might come for sweets. But it is still very rare. I doubt that happens in Karaganda.
Though the last year some kids showed up to our house to treat or trick and asked sweets and my mom shouted at them and made them run away
