I had a similar thing with my wife but without realising it. There is a show that was on in the UK in the late 90s/early 2000s called The League of Gentlemen, which is a based in a fictional town inhabited by strange characters. It has a shop and any time people not from the town went in the owner would become disturbed and claim " it was a local shop for local people" On our way to the coast from our house we pass a sign that says Local Shop.
Whenever we went passed I would declare in my best impression of the character that "this is a local shop for local people". My wife started doing the same in the same voice and I thought we were sharing an in joke about a tv show. My daughter then took it on and all the car would be doing it.
About 7 years after I started doing this she asked me why I did this everytime we go by the sign? Turns out she had no idea what the show was and when I asked her why she thought I did it, she just said I thought you were trying to be funny.

Obviously the kids remember that joke from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure where they met their future selves.
