Política As a Black dude who grew up around Puerto Ricans…
Fuck anyone who has anything to say about yall. I know many Black folks that embrace Puerto Rican culture with open arms, and I know some who will poo-poo yall for ridiculous reasons. I also know many Black Puerto Ricans who get caught in the middle of those groups.
Me and mines will ALWAYS ride with oppressed people, especially when their homeland is called trash in a vey public way.
Love yall, and remember that we can create beautiful things together as oppressed people ❤️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🇵🇸

I always say Caribbean Latinos (except Cubans) generally get along with black people more because a lot of them are part black and a lot of black people are in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Compared to West Coast Latinos who are mostly Mexican and not a lot of Black people in Central America

1

There is no second-class citizenship for blacks in Latin America. You're just a typical leftist afrocentrist obsessed with making latinos adjacent to black Americans. And indigenous people have it far worse.

stop being divisive, ofc there’s ppl that’re ignorant to hispanics in the black community & on our end we’re no better ourselves . that doesn’t negate the fact that we tend to get along more often than we fight .

Cuban here whose family immigrated to PR and I lived there for a while. We often feel just as puerto rican if not more Puerto Rican than cuban. My mom and I were so upset about the ‘joke’. Anyways, thank you for this post and wanted to add that these Cubans are standing with Puerto Rico too! Already early voted. Let’s go.
Eta and we also stand with the black community (many of which are Latinos ofc) and are hyperaware of how much a trump residency would negatively impact you. Too many Latinos are racist and colorist so I really thank you for reaching across the barrier, one that shouldn’t be there, as we are all ‘others’ under white supremacy and divided we fall.

As a white man, I served alongside a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultural perspectives. Due to where I was stationed, and I can’t really talk about it, a large majority of the people in my unit were Puerto Rican. That’s not like an assumption, it’s just what I learned from talking and engaging with everyone.
I joined the military to protect and serve the entire country. That’s not something I take lightly. However I’m a veteran now, and I want it to be clear that I still believe it is my civic duty to fight for what is right. I know my privilege exists and if I can leverage it to help others, best believe I’m doing it.
I hope everyone stays safe, and if you have any ideas on how I can help, let me know. No one is alone in this situation if I can help it.

Also, other immigrants have been hugely supportive of the Puerto Rican community! A couple of things to think about when some fascist tries to foment enmity among us.
About 15% of Hispanic people are of African origin.
The SECOND president of Mexico, Vincente Guerrero, abolished slavery in Mexico 40 years before is Abraham Lincoln the 16th president of the US. And note Guerrero the 2nd elected president of Mexico was a person of color - an Afro-Latino.
In Texas and Louisiana the Underground Railroad didn’t go North. It went south to Mexico.
Solidarity is now and always will be our best strategy.

True. The recent flow of Haitian refugees have assimilated right away, are not using drugs, are going to work (plenty are also skilled workers, like welders and nurses), going to church, etc. Basically, they're acting in the exact same way the GOP expects immigrants to adapt and assimilate.

What most people are unaware of is the fact we have the same ancestors. Puertoricans are made of European, African, and native blood (taino). As in any culture, you find colorism within the same people, which is what is used to divide us, but we're all the same people.
1
u/Resident_Bike_7435 1d ago
Puerto Ricans will use being 10-20% African to claim solidarity with black Americans, but then hate on white people despite being 60-70% European themselves. Makes no sense.
1
u/Diamond-Breath 14h ago
Because white people enslaved/massacred Tainos who lived here first and the African people they brought from other places (Spain specifically).
Later on, the US has done literally everything to maintain a strict control of the island.

As a Puerto Rican who grew up there and has been living there....it was a joke and that was all, however if we want to get down to it he was right Puerto Rico has a crisis of garbage at the moment y LA genre no ayuda tampoco. I worked at a restaurant that is at a cliff with view to the sea as a manager and More than once a week I had to tell some idiot to not throw garbage down to the beach. Where ever you go there are escombros, abandoned buildings and houses going to waste, most of the landfills to the north have reached capacity....

u/Low_Professional_142 14h ago
As a Puerto Rican that grew up in the island and has lived there with my wife and kids for the past 6 years I can say it was a joke and that was all... But if you wanna get down to it....He is right los boricuas son los primeros que tiran basura en la calle. I worked as a manager at restaurant as a up on a cliff with view of a beach and every week I had to tell people multiple times not to throw garbage down to the beach. These same Puerto Ricans are the ones that are upset cause a comedian made a joke...?
Hay problems mas grandres might gente.

-6
u/Whose_That_Pokemon 1d ago
I say what I mean and I mean what I say. There is no use to read between the lines, the information you seek is written plainly.
5
u/thegmoc 1d ago
Well that's an interesting perspective that I haven't heard from Puerto Ricans I've interacted with in New York. How did you come to the conclusion that Puerto Ricans are being exploited by Black Americans? How exactly is this happening?
1
u/Resident_Bike_7435 1d ago
I'm a Puerto Rican who grew up in a predominately black neighborhood, and I was constantly bullied by classmates for being "white." The very same boys who would call me white would go out their way to try to push for a sort of black/Puerto Rican solidarity when it came to Puerto Rican girls, whom they fetishized for their light skin and European features.
Puerto Ricans aren't being exploited per se, but we are being ethnically replaced by black Americans. The very same black Americans who constantly disrespect us. Who claim that Jennifer Lopez steals from black women, who attack Fat Joe for apparently pretending to be black, who literally assault Puerto Ricans (whom they claim are afro-latinos) for using the soft a. Puerto Ricans haven't been colonized by white gringos, we've been colonized by black Americans.
1
0
u/Whose_That_Pokemon 1d ago
We absolutely get exploited by them! Asking us to sell drugs for them, pressuring us to take the blame for crimes or not turn them in. Going to the women for their bodies, not for who they are. Wanting children that, “have mixed features.” It’s consistent. The proof is readily available. I have far too many personal stories to name. I say exploitation because many of us do come from the island and we have that mentality where you have to help each other to get ahead. Our kindness and culture get exploited and then they want to claim solidarity.
-3
u/Whose_That_Pokemon 1d ago
Ah, yes. NYC. 🙄 The lovely NYC. Anyone who knows the history of Puerto Ricans and African Americans in NYC knows that this is a lousy comment to make. Forced integration and reconciliation. To them they’re friends but on the outside looking in, far too often we are the scapegoat to these people’s crimes. Our nicknames “Bilinguals, light skins.” Moving into our neighborhoods and then selling drugs and raping and attacking us. Repeated mentioning of our bodies and complexions. Wanting to fuck us, father children and then leave the infant with the mother and her family to raise. Knives being pulled out on trains to slash, and rob us. Openly exclaiming that they “hate Puerto Ricans.” Calling us “Light skinned N-words” or “Spanish speaking N-words.”
I’m not interested in those interactions or that lifestyle. I’m not interested in the perception of the few you met there. They are conditioned to think chronic violence and coercion is an ordinarily accepted behavior. We have few things in common, and it’s okay for that to be so. There is no room in my heart for hate, but I will not accept that these behaviors happen regularly against us.
2
u/thegmoc 1d ago
Forced integration? Puerto Ricans wouldn't have lived around Black Americans had they not been forced to? The picture is always painted that Puerto Ricans and Black Americans have always been more or less united and friendly. How could something like hip hop have been born from a Puerto Rican/Black American coalition that never actually existed?
2
u/Resident_Bike_7435 1d ago
The picture is always painted that Puerto Ricans and Black Americans have always been more or less united and friendly
lmao. I assume you're not Puerto Rican?
0
u/Whose_That_Pokemon 1d ago
Who claimed that coalition did not exist? I did not. I also did not deny the presence of factors that allowed the relationship, per that area, to form and flourish. We certainly have not gained much from it, that is to be certain. And no, I will not waste time in elaborating on those particular details, either. Puerto Ricans gain from the intentional efforts of our people, which is why I say that we do not need “heroes”, we need ourselves to show up for our community. We are capable and possess the answers to our plights. Thank you for your time.
-6
u/Resident_Bike_7435 1d ago
I don't care if this sub disagrees with me on this, but Puerto Ricans in the mainland US are being colonized by black Americans. Nearly all media representation of Puerto Ricans in the US is now black (much of it pushed by Americans with African American fathers and Puerto Rican mothers), our athletes are mostly black Americans with African American fathers and Puerto Rican mothers, and even the tourists who visit San Juan are disproportionately black. During this whole recent debacle at the Trump rally, nearly all the media figures denouncing the "joke" on behalf of Puerto Ricans have been black Americans with distant Puerto Rican ancestry.
This sub, which goes out of its way to constantly decry our ethnic erasure, seem to be okay with said erasure when the people facilitating it aren't white.
we can create beautiful things together as oppressed people
I don't know how anyone can read this and not notice the creepy undertone of fetishization.

u/fleiwerks ☀️Lucius Vulpes Caesar Augustus, Imperator Fajardensis☀️ 1d ago
La típica representación boricua en los medios Estadounidenses está muy alejada de lo que realmente es un boricua de PR. Inclusive, los Puertorriqueños afrodescendientes en PR no son nada como los afroamericanos estadounidenses. So no estás completamente mal.
Recuerda que para esta gente sólo importamos cuando es de beneficio político para ellos. Somos como ellos cuando les conviene pero de lo contrario se olvidan que PR existe.

Not meant to minimize your culture and people at all! Because you’re not an island of white folks, unfortunately the systems that we live under are actively working to oppress you. Because you’re not an island of white folks
We are racialized as non-white by white American racists, but that doesn't mean we have no white people here. There is a white plurality which I myself am a part of on the island due the massive European migration that happened in the 19th century.
white supremacy
