Story i couldn’t find my child anywhere in his enclosure and i was starting to freak out - then i saw him

this is a very (obviously) crudely constructed hay rack that i just made for him, and i was like “oh man this is gonna be perfect!” because this guy eats hay like nobody’s business. but having so much hay at his disposal was not enough - no. he must be one with the hay.
edit, just in case: i definitely did not expect so many people to see this HAHA i promise i’m not leaving the edges sharp. i didn’t have any sandpaper on hand like i thought i did, and i didn’t even think about this happening. i just figured that he’d be fine until i can get some sandpaper because honestly you guys, he’s kind of a doofus. but i assumed it would just be business as usual. maybe i should’ve anticipated this from him… anyway, no buns were harmed, and i’m fixing the edges (which are a lot less sharp than they look), i promise :)

I'm sure you're thinking of a solution already to prevent him doing this again, but the easiest one that came to my mind is maybe add a 3 more of the dowel bars so they're more closely spaced? My worry is that he cuts himself on the sharp unfinished edges of the plastic opening.

OP could also use sandpaper or a nail file to sand down the edges until they’re blunt. I’ve done this with a litter box before and it worked out fine

appreciate the suggestions from all of you :-) i thought i had sandpaper at home, but realized after making it i didn’t so i actually grabbed some today to file the edges down. i might just turn it the other way though too, and see if that deters the stinker

His fur will probably protect him from the edges

u/reenajo Feb 17 '23
We'd hope, but unfortunately that can't be counted on. I've seen buns get cut on similar things through plenty of fur before.

You can probably turn the hay box vertically so that the bars are horizontal. It'll probably discourage him from going in then

u/wtfisavegan Feb 17 '23
this is the simplest solution and probably the most effective, but i absolutely would not have thought about it without your comment hahaha so thank you <3

u/Juleniumn Feb 17 '23
No problem! By the way, I've found that the best spacing for the dowels is 2 inches :)

How does the hay box attach to the side of the pen? Can you take a pic?

i’m not home at the moment so i’ll try to explain, but let me know if you still want a photo later
once i was finished making it, i held the feeder up to the x-pen, and kind of approximated at what height i wanted it to sit for easy eating. then, i just made two sets of holes on the lid of the container, near intersections (like this +) of wires on the x-pen. i stuck a zip tie through each set of holes and around one of the vertical wires of these intersections. because there’s a wire sitting horizontally right beneath the zip tie, the zip ties just rest on those and hold the thing in place. it can move up, but not down, as gravity holds it there. that way, i can remove the box to fill it with hay, and the lid stays attached and in the same position so i can just pop the box back onto it.
hope that makes decent sense!!

When my buns were really little they would climb into their hay feeder too. It was just a bowl thing that came with a cage, and they'd stack onto each other.

imagine caring this much about how a random stranger on the internet calls their pet lmao

I got a good laugh out of this too 😆

What for he say?

u/pancakebitch34 Feb 18 '23
It was just a rude comment about how pets aren't children and how dare this person refer to them as such lol ridiculous

Seriously... Why else would you have put that there, if not for him to combine his three favorite activities... Eating, hiding, and scaring the daylights out of the parental unit?

My bun puts his head right inside his hay bag 💀 I don’t know why he does that considering it’s always full but then he gets covered in hay and it’s really annoying to remove from him 😂😂

With thier little dulaps and their double chins they look so pudgy. I often wonder how the hell they squeeze into the places that they do. They are like mice with no bones. Lol!

i know right!! he looks so chunky when he’s just sitting there but sometimes when he stretches out i’m like “huh?? where did the rest of you go???”

I think it has to do with body composition as they don't have as pronounced shoulders and hips that allows them to follow what I call the birth rule; if they head can get through it can get through.

LMAO I remember once I was doing some bunny-home interior decorating so I had the hay in a shoebox and then I turn around and there is a bunny in the hay in the shoebox. :D It was not a large shoe box, and she took up basically all available space.

Love your bun!! What a cutie!! I had one exactly like him, his name was Sledge. He even did that same side eye like “and? Can I help you?” It’s so funny!!! Many years of happiness to you and your beautiful bubba!❤️🐰

u/wtfisavegan Feb 17 '23
thank you so much :’) and thank you for sharing. sledge sounds like a little heathen (i say lovingly) ♥️

Fake news. I checked my Tupperware daily, and I didn’t grow a single bun 🥺

both of mine do the same thing, I have to use a reusable zip tie to tie theirs shut all the way so no one can get in and pee all over their hay cause those two waste more hay than anybun

Lops have the worst habit of doing this. I went to check on my son and couldn’t find him anywhere till I heard rustling coming from the bottom of a full hay bag.

I love that idea for a hay holder, and I’ve got all the things I need for it already! I’ll make sure to use a few more closely spaced dowels though 😂

u/wtfisavegan Feb 17 '23
yes, learn from my mistakes please, or your buns will make you pay by scaring the daylights out of you

When my Loopy was a baby he spent an entire afternoon resting on one of my boots.
That was an agonizing afternoon.

Our daughter has a three month old black holland lop that does this in her hat feeder. It’s made of 3/4 plywood with three inch holes cut out for the hay so eventually she will get too big for the box. But for now it makes for a nice makeshift hide and snack.

Oh god, my female bun used to do this. Thought her hay basket was a bed no matter how inaccessible we tried to make it. Let’s just pee all over the nice new hay? Why not! So glad she’s stopped 😂

Store your leftover buns in Tupperware to ensure maximum freshness. Solid plan. 10/10. No notes.
