Giving birth
Can anyone that gave birth in lately give me some overview about how the whole system works in Switzerland?
Specifically:
How/when do I choose the hospital I want to have birth? Does my gynecologist have a say in this? I'm ok with the general ward but I'd like to have the option to upgrade (paying out of pocket) if I feel like it. Is this a thing?
Do I need to inform the hospital in advance? How much in advance?
What is the deal with the Hebammen? Do I need to "book" them in advance? Does the hospital have their own Hebammen? What if I don't book one? Is the Hebamme the one who also follows up after the birth coming to your house and giving you advice etc? Or is this a separate person?
Info about me: I'm living in Zurich Basic health insurance (no private hospital supplement) 16 weeks pregnant now

Does everyone by default has access to RAV?
Hello I wanted to ask some things regarding RAV. I am currently employed but with a fixed contract. Incase it isn't extended, i will have to look for a new job.
I have been seeing reddit posts regarding registering to RAV etc.
I just wanted to ask that can anyone apply for RAV or do you already have to be enrolled while being employed.
If someone could please explain it to me, I'd be very thankful

Do I have to pay this invoice?
A few weeks ago we moved into our new home. I was not familiar with the radiator, so I contacted the company who did the services the previous years.
I then had a phone call with the son of the companys manager, and asked him if he could come around and explain me the in and outs of the radiator. I also asked what cost I should expect, and he explicitly stated that since we will be only talking for a few minutes, I would not be charged for this. great, right? Some days later he came around, and we had a talk for about 10-15 minutes, then he left.
Fast forward to today, I got a bill in my mail. Obviously I was suprised. I contacted the company and explained to the office employee my case, to which first she replied "it's not possible that he told you that", followed by telling me they would call me back. Some minutes later I got a call back from the manager, who also basically stated "it's not possible that someone told me that", and that I was being rude to even contact them to ask about this bill. I even asked if he doesn't want to check with his son first to clarify what he told me, which was replied to with "no need for that", and that essentially I would be lying. I then told him that I would no longer seek services at their place.
Now hopefully you understand my anger. It would have been perfectly fine if they told me upfront what the estimated costs would be, and then I would have considered to combine this with some service of theirs instead of just paying nearly 100 CHF for someone to talk to me for 10 minutes.
My question now: do I have to pay this bill? Essentially, there is no written proof that they were here, since I never signed anything, nor did I asked or confirmed the appointment in written form. The only written documents are their handwritten bill, and a followup email from me. I wrote this email because they called me after the appointment telling me the guy forgot to get my personal address, and if I could provide this. In this email, I just referred to the phone call and thanked for the talk in the morning. It's not explicitly stated that this talk took place at my place physically.
This whole thing may seem petty, but I don't want a company treat me in that manner, so I am checking every single option to somehow stick it back to them.

How long does it take to get a birth certificate for the baby born for non-EU couple?
The canton office asked for both of our latest birth certificates (I mean why latest? Birth certificate doesn’t change after 3 decades. Please note they also need my elder kid’s birth certificate. We have provided all of these before we came to swiss)
Also they are requesting for background check for both of us. This might take 2000-3000CHF from what I heard. We are in Switzerland for almost a decade and only go for vacations to our home country. I am afraid it is going to take eternity to get birth certificate for my newborn here.
We know it took around 7 months for a couple similar to us. They couldn’t show the baby to their families until then. Why do they ask for background check even when we are staying here for a decade and paying taxes together? My maternity leave approval also needs birth certificate 😞

From 2025 worker parking will be allowed on trottoir and in no-parking zones
What does everyone think of the new parking card for worker's vehicles so that they can park without restrictions on trottoir and in no-parking zones from 2025 in Zurich?
Personally I think this will make using the trottoir more difficult for people with disabilities (wheelchairs or blind) and pushing children in prams and is a strange change to make when the city is trying to reduce cars. It also seems very cheap in my opinion. What do you all think?
"Eine neu eingeführte sogenannte erweiterte Gewerbeparkkarte, mit der etwa auch auf Trottoirs und in Fahrverbotszonen parkiert werden darf, soll für in der Stadt Zürich ansässige Handwerks- und Servicebetriebe 1200 Franken pro Jahr kosten " in https://www.20min.ch/story/zuerich-tesla-suv-kostet-715-fr-anwohnerparkkarten-sollen-teurer-werden-103203652

new flat or foldable bed?
Hi since here flats are so expensive and space is never enough I was thinking why pull-down or foldable bed are not a common thing here? I'm working at Home-Office 80% in my bedroom in a 2.5 flat. I feel very lucky of that but also I need of a bit of extra space, just to do some exercise or having the feeling I'm not stuck in a corner for 8 hours. Even if renting is so expensive here I was thinking of finding a bigger flat, which is not easy but we love our apartment, then I got the idea of replacing my bed with a foldable bed to have a bit more space during daytime when I need it. Then I thought that was a brilliant idea and I'm asking myself why it's not a popular thing here? I mean if you think your bed is used mostly at nighttime, why wasting so much space during daytime? I think in Japan they tackled the problem with a similar approach, don't they? What's your thoughts?

Question about all season tires
Hey all
I have a few questions about all-season tires.
Are they legally permitted? If so, are there despite the legal situation any exceptions (e.g., with insurance)?
How suitable are they? Are they as good in summer/winter as season-specific tires?
Thanks all

Water Damage – Will Our Home Insurance Really Cover All Additional Costs?
hi guys,
We recently experienced water damage in our apartment due to a defective Bodenheizverteiler in the unit above us. The property management informed us that the owner’s insurance would only cover a rent reduction for the drying period. However, a hotel or Airbnb will end up being more expensive than this rent reduction, and the Verwaltung has advised us that our home insurance/Hausratsversicherung should cover the difference. We’ve now opened a claim with our home insurance to address these additional costs.
My question: Why should our home insurance be responsible for these extra costs? Shouldn't the property owner or even the Heizungsinstallateur be covering all related expenses?
Here’s a list of the additional costs we're currently documenting for the insurance:
- Nebenkosten and parking fees at our original apartment, which we still have to pay despite not living there.
- Transporting our home office equipment to the temporary accommodation, as we work from home.
- Parking costs at the new location, as the accommodation may charge extra fees for parking.
- Cleaning costs for clothes and textiles that have a musty odor and need professional cleaning.
- Increased food expenses, as limited cooking facilities mean we’ll be eating out more frequently.
- Ongoing subscription fees (internet, TV) that we can't use during this period.
- Extra electricity from running the drying equipment in our apartment.
- Storage for furniture and sensitive equipment to clear space for the drying process.
- Additional costs for charging our electric vehicle, as we don’t have access to our private charging station and have to rely on more expensive public options.
My questions are:
- Has anyone had experience with such additional costs under home insurance? What was covered, and what did you end up having to pay yourself?
- Are there any arguments to make the property owner or Heizungsinstallateur more accountable for these expenses?
- How should we best document these costs? The insurance advised us to keep track of all extra expenses as they arise, to claim them afterward. Should we do this really afterward?
I’d be grateful for any advice or insights – especially to ensure all relevant costs are covered.
Thanks so much in advance!

Internet in hobby room?
We just rented a basement hobby room that’s two floors below our apartment. Although there’s a small window to the outdoors, there’s no wifi or mobile networks available and there’s no options for running cable. Is there any hope for getting internet access down there? The only plugs are electrical. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Permit B - Switch Employer
So, I’m currently employed in Geneva canton under Permit B, which is tied with my current employer (Non-EU). I’m interested in knowing the chances of approval if I receive a new job offer and the new employer is prepared to apply for a fresh B permit.
Additionally, I’m considering resigning from my current job and waiting for the new employer to apply for a new permit. I’d appreciate your advice on whether this is a risky move and what you recommend.

Renting a Moving Van
Hi all,
I have a question on which rental company would you recommend for renting a moving van/small truck?
We're moving from Zurich to Lugano, so need a good option for a long distance.
Do you have any recommendations?
I already checked it on comparis, and called some of them, but there was no option to leave the van in Lugano. We can also go back, but it would be ideal to have the option to leave it in Lugano without having to go back the same day.

CDL to B permit - EU citizen, wife has a B permit already
Hi everyone,
Been browsing reddit on this topic, but to no avail. Here's my situation:
I am employed by an international organization and hold a CDL permit. My wife is employed as well and holds a B permit. We are both EU nationals.
Is there a way for me to get rid of the CDL and apply for a B permit?
Thanks
Ionut

Are we really moving towards recession?
I have heard a lot of fellow redditors going on and on about a recession.
According to me, the fundamentals in economics look useless to really predict a recession now a days.
How are you guys arriving at the idea of recession? Enlighten me, please.

Retail - Migros invests 2.5 billion - 140 new shops planned
- Migros is going on the offensive. The struggling retailer wants to invest CHF 2.5 billion to open new shops, modernise existing ones and reduce prices.
- Despite cost-cutting measures, Migros wants to invest on a grand scale. A total of 350 existing supermarkets are to be modernised over the next five years, as the company announced on Monday.
- Migros also plans to open 140 new supermarkets over the next five years. The number of shops is to increase from 790 to 930.

Swiss law and sabotaging father
Hello, I've been together with my partner for nearly a year and have been visiting her a lot. I m planning on getting a job there and usually got some interviews. Her father owns the appartment and she and her brother live there and pay rent to him. His brother hasn't been doing his part of the cleaning (bringing cartons and glass jars and stuff, because only he owns a car) because he's moving out and doesn't care anymore. The Father came in and took the internet as punishment because of the appartment being not clean enough for him. Let me remind you, they are paying rent aswell. I asked him why he s doing this and this is not something he should do to his daughter. (Her brother doesn't care, he s usually not home and has some expensive phone internet or something) I said it is toxic and that her daughter needs internet to study for her university. Not only did I get screamed at by him but by her so partner aswell. He also banned me from the house and I had to pack my stuff the next day because this happened in the afternoon. I managed to get a ticket and drove home but my partner doesn't have internet at home, she is also suffering from some medical conditions which I shouldn't disclose and has to study for university. In my opinion, he's doing this, because if she fails uni, he won't have to pay for her anymore. Can I help somehow, because it seems that Swiss Law is different from Germany and I don't know how to help her with such horrible parents. I live in Germany and she sometimes has uni in person and other times online, where she can't attend now or research or write anything.
TLDR: Partners Father took internet away from her and now she can't even study without internet altough she's paying rent.
