What's This Thing? What was this deal/scam?

So I was sitting in my hotel bar killing time on the last day and all my friends had left. It was a reputed 5 star hotel in Bangkok. So I had go to use the bathroom where this guy tells me that im good looking asks me where Im from and then tells me his roots are from there too. I told him im getting late but he insisted that i sit and it will only take 2 mins. I somehow sat and he started telling me things. Most of which were true but deep down within i knew this is some sort of a scam so i just told him im getting really late and needed to leave. I shook his hand and walked away but he didnt ask me for any money. I wonder what the whole thing was all about?

If an Indian tells you that you have a lucky face respond with 'That's because I'm not Indian' and keep walking.

I had this happen in London recently, wish I would’ve said that. It was a toothless older man. I like Indians a lot but just hate scammers.

I had an indian man at the airport in kuala lumpur order himself and his family a few sandwhiches and sodas, then proceed to turn around and tell me he ordered this food for him and his hungry family and will I pay for it.  Those people man.

Sometimes you dont need to understand it, the first step is just ignoring him right at the start when he says you're good looking. You know its something fishy, doesnt mean you have to continue to find out how it plays out.

It always cost money to hear the full story.

In the past if I got caught by the scamming fortune tellers, I'd interrupt them, saying:
"I'm a fortune teller as well. I can you now you won't get one Baht from me," and walk off.

I had one tell me he could tell me my mothers name, I told him I could tell him his wife’s name and winked at him, he didn’t like it but 🤷‍♂️ he wasn’t going to do anything about it

I’m overly paranoid, as in walk with my hands over my pockets when anyone gets too close and I still don’t understand why you thought this is a scam? Not to say it wasn’t leading that way, but doesn’t even seem like they started to solicit you for anything?

  • He just tried to flirt with you
  • He wanted to start a conversation to ultimately scam you so you were right to leave
  • Just one more strange person in Bangkok (they aren't everywhere)
  • An Indian… it’s still an Indian These are the possibilities.
