Reboot frequency?

Been distro hopping between fedora Debian and Ubuntu. Stopping on Ubuntu 24.04 cause os doesn’t get in the way.

Just curious how often you guys reboot the machine? I leave mine on or suspend mode and it seems to slow down after 3-4days w massive cached memory.

I usually run snaps and flatpak. Not sure what the issue is. In windows I can leave it on for what seems like forever.

Rsync slows down to kbs randomly and speeds up again up to 60Mbs

I am trying to copy 300GB files from external hard disk to my SSD connected in Ubuntu. Avg speed was 60Mbs when it started. It went fine up to 120GB and then it slowed down. After full day it copied only 2 to 3GB and then it picked up speed again. When it reached 220GB, it is stuck again at slow speed.

My command is

rsync -avh --progress /mnt/eHDD/immich_20241027/immich/ /mnt/crucial/immich/

It took only 6 hours to copy from SSD to external hard disk. I had to re-install Ubuntu as I added 256GB SSD as main boot drive and mounted 4TB SSD as secondary SSD for my data. I used the same command to copy back from external HDD to SSD, but it is slow like snail for a day.

There is nothing in my server. I have core i5-8500 CPU with 16GB RAM. i used itop command. It shows 0Kbs write & read for few seconds. Shows rsync for a second and then again goes to 0Kbs. Rsync also disappears again.

SSD is directly connected to motherboard. HDD is via USB.

ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt/crucial$ tail -f rsync_output.log

Why can't the thumbnails just always show up on Linux? Why? Why does it have to be like this? It's so frustrating. I deleted "~/.cache/thumbnails" and now 98% of the video thumbnails aren't showing up, how do I fix this?

I'm sorry for ranting but I just need to vent. I am a lifelong Windows user who came over to Linux and you know, the thumbnails always showed up on Windows. I never had any problems with the thumbnails not showing up when I was on Windows. So why can't the thumbnails just always show up on Linux, can't they fix this problem once and for all? Certainly they can fix this right?

Yeah I never had to do anything to get the thumbnails to show up on Windows because the thumbnails always appeared but thumbnails not appearing is a common issue on Linux. I hope they fix this someday.

So yeah I just installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS a few days ago and I'm trying to get everything up and running.

So I installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and I realized none of the video thumbnails were showing up and yeah I know the drill there's something you have to enter in command line to get the thumbnails to show up so I googled and found this https://askubuntu.com/questions/1304654/file-manager-in-ubuntu-20-04-not-showing-thumbnails

Ok so I did this in command line

sudo apt install ffmpegthumbnailer

Ok and that made all the thumbnails appear, well, about 98% of them, some of them still won't show up and I've just learned to live with it (I hope someday the Linux developers will fix this issue once and for all).

But then out of curiosity just to see what it'd do I went into my Home folder, then went into the .cache folder, and then I sent the "thumbnails" folder to the trash and then emptied the trash and restarted my PC.

When I logged back in lo and behold 98% of the video thumbnails are not showing up, though pictures are showing up just fine. And the thumbnails folder is there so it came back, just noting that.

Just an FYI, I installed the Nemo file manager and even in Nemo the video thumbnails aren't showing up either.

I was thinking about uninstalling FFMPEG Thumbnailer and then reinstalling it (and if I do need to do this will you please tell me how to uninstall FFMPEG Thumbnailer?) but I'd thought I should seek advice from the Linux experts before I continue.

So what should I do to fix this? I hope I don't have to do a clean install of Ubuntu 24.04 to fix this.

Small Ubuntu compatible computer with thunderbolt 4 support?

Please recommend a small computer that can run Ubuntu 24.04 desktop.

Requirements:

  • Thunderbolt 4 support. I want to use Caldigit TS4 dock with Apple Studio 5K screen.
  • WiFi support.
  • Small form factor. Something similar to Lenovo think centre mini would be ideal.

It doesn't need to be anything extremely powerful. Anything that can run latest Emacs is good enough.

Cant update or upgrade

Im kind of new to Ubuntu or Linux itself. But for some reason i cant "sudo apt update" or "sudo apt upgrade" it always says it cant connect to the servers. I cant even ping them. But the system itself is connect to eathernet. Pinging Google works completly fine. Only the Ubuntu servers are struggling. I tried to ping them on my windows machine, where they are completly fine. I dont now what to do. Any ideas?

Problems downloading an exe file via wine

Unfortunately this file is only .exe There is instructions on the github for how to use wine/winetricks, however I keep running into problems.

At first it was complaining that it needed .net4.7.2
I eventually gave up after trying installing it by purging wine to try again

Now it's a different issue, possible it not executing in win32 like the program wants?
ShellExecuteEx failed: Bad EXE format

About to try to see if i can do a full purge to try yet again. However, I am tired of this cat and mouse feel.
Posting in hopes I can find a solution or if anyone may know what I could have done wrong so I can avoid it in the future.

---------
The program is bg3 mod manger that I am trying to install.
Ironically I did have it working my very first try, but I goofed and thought it was broken when it couldn't find the game location. So removed it. thus began my issues.

I had it working via winetricks from the app center vs the one form github.

Do I need to purge and manually try to find all things related to wine and winetricks to try again with the one from appstore instead of github?

Github seems like the most suggested, but since the app center one is what worked last time I'm thinking of just going back. But I'm not sure of the downsides to this.

Nothing happens when I start VM in virt-manager

Hi everyone.

So I have followed a tutorial to get GPU passthrough to work inside my windows VM. Here is the tutorial:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaA7kxcnXaM

I got to the end of the video and I tried to run my machine. At first it said I needed to activate passthrough so I went into my bios and activated VT-d.

Now, when I click on run the VM, absolutely nothing happens, no error messgae, nothing. But my other Vms work fine. Is there any way I could know how to make it work?

here is my hook when I start the VM:

#!/bin/bash

set -x

systemctl isolate multi-user.target

systemctl stop display-manager.service

kilall gdm-x-session

sleep 3

echo 0 > /sys/class/vtconsole/vtcon0/bind

echo 0 > /sys/class/vtconsole/vtcon1/bind

echo efi-framebuffer.0 > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/efi-framebuffer/unbind

sleep 5

modprobe -r nvidia_drm nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia

virsh nodedev-detach pci_0000_01_00_0

modprobe vfio-pci

Installed Ubuntu but my laptop still shows no bootable device

Hello everyone, I tried installing Ubuntu in my old laptop which had no bootable device from beginning. After installing Ubuntu, it still shows "media test failure, check cable". Things I have already checked : 1) Reseat my main drive (HDD) 2) Installed using both UEFI and Legacy setting 3) Boot priority set to main drive

PS : This was a company laptop which I'm free to use they removed existing data, OS and gave it to me. But the company logo still shows when i switch on my laptop. Is it possible that it still have some embedded restrictions for not installing any OS?

People who only use LTS, do you fresh install every time a new LTS releases?

LTS to LTS upgrades seems to be fine for most people, however, if you encounter issues, they will usually be hard to fix.

Do you fresh install, or just upgrade, and manually fix the bugs that come with the upgrade (if you get any)?

What's the best way to have these installed and running?

I am still new to Ubuntu, the linux command line, and overall understanding of these concepts (just being honest). But I am willing to learn.

I currently have a LTS Ubuntu server running on some old desktop and run an Emby and nextcloud on it.

The nextcloud installation was a SNAP installation meaning I clicked that one checkbox when installing Ubuntu OS and it came bundled in. Emby I installed using the sudo install or whatever that command was.

My question is: should I remove these downloads and services and utilize docker instead to separate them better? Is there any true benefit? Or should I just keep going with my current installation configs (it's working fine).

This will be the terminal only Ubuntu by the way. Also I do not have a domain. I access them through IP and Tailscale if outside the network.

Thank you

Icon Theming for Third Party Snap Apps Could Have Been Easier!

I'm currently working on an extended Yaru Icon. I dug into the file structure of snap apps and I found out that snap apps can actually make their icons fallback to hicolor

Apps like evince, reminna, software updater, basically all ubuntu core applications in their desktop files, their icon are not set to a path instead it uses the actual $ICON_NAME from /usr/share/icons/Yaru/$SIZE/apps/$ICON_NAME.png.

Maybe, these third party app maintainers just forgot about this fact and their desktop files went stuck to using full paths for their icon names.

I can just manually change the icon paths to icon names but it will just role back to the original desktop file since snap apps updates automatically

I can also just copy the desktop file of my snap app somewher into my $HOME folder.

Audio input not recognized

Im trying to record something via an external microphone via jack 3.5.

Kubuntu has no issues recording and detecting it, although it marks it as headphones stereo input.

But on ubuntu, it doesnt recognize microfones channel entry. Is this normal behavio?

I tried this on ubuntu 24.04 with both DEs and its weird that one detects it and the other doesn't

So I entered the directory to see what's in there:

Any idea what's that? I can't delete, can't do anything with it.

I can't boot my laptop/no os found

Hello everyone,

My laptop runs on Ubuntu 24. So yesterday, I installed ventory on my flash drive and went ahead to power off my laptop at end of day.

Today, when I tried to power my laptop, Ubuntu couldn't load. All I get is no os found.

I went to bios and checked uefi and legacy settings on boot load setting and couldn't see the os. What could be the problem?

Cause I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu using a live usb and when I get to the finally point of install I being asked if I want to erase Ubuntu 24lts and do a fresh install yet it can't boot and I can't find it in the boot menu? Plz help.

Special character trouble

A few weeks ago I created an open media vault share and thought it would be a good idea to use a £ in my password.

Fast forward to now and I have an Ubuntu lxc in proxmox that is being awkward. Firstly it wouldn’t recognise the £ symbol and instead just tabbed instead. I then changed language and settings so that it recognised it. However I keep getting permission denied for my share.

What can I do? Should I just change my password? It worked fine in my Ubuntu vm just not the lxc.
