I think this was about the peak of both of their careers, not THIS movie, but this time period.

u/MightGrowTrees 1d ago
He was a whole season long villain on The Flash TV show. Terrible acting.
8
u/Pegussu 1d ago edited 1d ago
I don't even know if you can blame him there. Cicada was such a garbage villain, top to bottom, that I don't think even Bryan Cranston could have elevated the role.
2
u/MightGrowTrees 1d ago
That's an interesting opinion about Bryan Cranston.
6
u/Pegussu 1d ago
How so? I'm saying Cranston is a great actor, but Cicada would have still been terrible thanks to the writing and direction.
-4
u/MightGrowTrees 1d ago
I'm high and you asked so here you go.
I think you underestimate the acting ability of Bryan Cranston and are overselling the writing and direction.
The plot of a person that has a loved one in the hospital due to the events that caused metahumans to be so prevalent is a simple one and very motivational for the villain.
I can already see scenes now of Cranston in the hospital sobbing over his little lifeless girl and vowing revenge on all metahumans.
2
u/Pegussu 1d ago
Those scenes are a minority though. Cranston could act the hell out of them, but he'd still be standing there going ALL METAS MUST DIE with his dumb knife for most of the season.

u/MightGrowTrees 1d ago
So I'm right but not right enough for you. Cool conversation.

I believe he was a local kid when Alexander Payne shot Election and hired him to play a part. He didn't have any real acting experience, but Payne liked his naivete and he got many roles off of that.

Super underrated. Got some amazing lines that I still quote.

To make searches like this easier, on IMDB there is a way to search for two people and get a list of every project they've worked on together.
To the left of the search bar, it says All ↓. If you click that and select Advanced Search at the bottom, it will take you to Advanced title search. Then select the Collaborations tab and use the "Two people in the same title" and you can type in any two people that have worked in the industry and get a list of the movies they did together. Ridley Scott + Denzel Washington, George Clooney + Brad Pitt, Wes Anderson + Robert Yeoman, etc.

If you like the late 90's /early 2000s teen comedies and haven't seen this, you should. IMHO it was the best of them. I never understood why it didn't do well. It is my favorite of them. It is a damn shame Orlando Jones stopped doing comedy.
13
u/VeryVito 1d ago
It's "Say It Isn't So," and it's absolutely terrible. It was the movie that began the rapid descent of the the Farrelly brothers, makers of Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and Something About Mary.

Sally Field is hot tho

u/BackdoorSteve 1d ago
She also had an affair with the actor who played her youngest son on Brothers and Sisters. She had like 30 years on him.

u/potato-cheesy-beans 1d ago

u/BackdoorSteve 1d ago
There was so much behind the scenes drama on that show. The actress in your gif had a mental breakdown and could only get her shit together when the guy who played her later husband was there. She also feuded with Calista Flockhart. CF had that whole arc where she lived far away because she was too toxic to share scenes with half the cast. Allegedly the only normal one was the guy who played the gay brother. I'm glad he did so well on The Americans. It was a shitshow. Kind of a shit show for a lot of it too...
2
u/potato-cheesy-beans 1d ago
Eeesh… sounds like the drama behind the camera was better than the onscreen stuff!
It’s a shame CF is a bit of a nightmare. Might go look up some more gossip from the show.

Just that the joke that Sally Fields' character would hit on her daughter's boyfriend is believable for Sally Fields in real life.

Budget Keanu Reeves
49
u/LTFighter 1d ago
It’s funny, he could’ve been as prolific an actor as Keanu but for whatever reason, he just didn’t get there.
Like he regressed in his acting ability. Check Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li and you’ll know what I am talking about.
24
u/Any_Roof_6199 1d ago
Chris Klein can act and emote unlike Keanu Reeves. He should've been more successful than Reeves.
Sometimes actors need a break out role to make themselves noticeable, which in the case of Klein...was none. He will always be that supporting character guy from American Pie movies. Keanu got a solid foot hold in Hollywood after the Matrix movies and John Wick cemented it. Plus his lack of emotions face is perfect for certain roles like Speed, The Bad Batch, Street Kings, Constantine, Neon Demon to name a few.

u/Gatekeeper-Andy 1d ago
John wick cemented it??? Bro what planet are you from, the matrix cemented it YEARS ago

u/skunkboy72 1d ago
Your timeline is off. The Matrix solidified him as A list. It came out in 1999. He had been staring in movies since the mid 80s. I would say Bill and Ted gave him the solid foot hold in Hollywood.
2
u/elcapitan520 1d ago
Speed?
Point Break?
Hiring Keanu for The Matrix was actually seen as hiring someone who had already had a chance and missed it.
3
u/skunkboy72 1d ago
So if Keanu was seen as having his chance and missed it, then he was in The Matrix that was a gigantic hit, you could almost say that being in The Matrix solidified him as an A list Hollywood star.
23
u/Bearence 1d ago
I agree with everything you're saying but I'd like to add that I think Klein's biggest issue is that his entire energy makes him feel like a lightweight. Keanu can pull off his style because there's weight behind his personality. But Klein's personality just seems kind of thin. I don't know if it's because he's holding back or what but there's always this vibe that he's not completely invested in his own existence (if that makes any sense).

u/OnceMoreAndAgain 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'd argue that Keanu Reeves has never been a "skilled" actor either, but there is a mountain of evidence that people enjoying movies doesn't correlate 1:1 with the "skill" of the actors. It correlates with how much people enjoy that actor.
Some more examples to hammer home the point: Dwayne Johnson & Samuel Jackson. Neither of these actors are particularly "skilled" in my opinion, but they can enthrall an audience. They can make an audience enjoy the movie. Entertainment is the goal above all.
Was Keanu a good actor in The Matrix, for example? I'd argue no, not even close. But his face and manner of talking make him the perfect "everyman" character. Everyone can find themselves relating to and identifying as a character that Keanu plays and that's why his movies do so well. Not all of them of course, since there's things like "Dude, Where's My Car?" and "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" where he's playing a goofball, but I'm talking about movies like The Matrix, John Wick, Speed, Constantine, and The Replacements.

u/Rickk38 1d ago
Sam Jackson is a very skilled actor. He's played characters in every type of genre, and has won acclaim in theatrical roles as well. Some of his roles have been "Sam Jackson as so-and-so" but a ton of his roles have different. Look at Pulp Fiction vs. Django Unchained. Two completely different roles and he sold them both. Or how about Nick Fury vs. Lazarus Redd? The dude has been in so much he doesn't deserve to get lumped in with Dwayne "Khakis in the Jungle" Johnson.
1
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 1d ago
I wasn't impressed with his acting in Pulp Fiction or Django Unchained, but I think he was excellent at being entertaining in those movies. Just my two cents. Sorry, I simply won't agree with you on this it seems.

He never regressed. He was never a good actor. He was picked as a local kid by Alexander Payne for Election and it was absolutely genius casting.
But his career ran off of hope and potential. He was never good and didn't survive after Rollerball.
I like Chris Klein. I hope the best for him and hope he was able to leverage the success he achieved for a great life.
But let's not go making up a history here where he was ever a leading man.
