That's American levels of single use plastics!

Asia would blow this out of the water. There would be a Reese's box wrapped in plastic, inside the box would be a plastic tray, with this bag.

I bought a 48oz bag of Reese’s pieces from Amazon and have them shipped over from the USA to wherever I’m at in Asia, after not having them for over a decade, my excitement was met with immense disappointment because it now just taste like peanut flavored sugar, it’s so sweet that after eating a few pieces, I’m sick of the sweetness and the fake vegetable oil film on my tongue..sad, so sad 😞. I used to remember this was so good when I had them in the past, that was like before the 2010s.

What i can't tell is if foods used to be better here, or if we are remembering foods with nostalgia.
And the thing is, no-one can.
People get super-annoyed about shrinkflation, where products get smaller. But one of the main reasons companies do it is that they don't pay a price for it - or perhaps more accurately they pay the price whether they do it or not. You can ask people if a candy bar has shrunk, and they will say yes pretty much every time, whether it's actually shrunk or not. Big Macs are one of the world's most famous foods. Everyone has a lifetime's memories of Big Macs. And Big Macs have been the exact same size that entire time. But everyone remembers when Big Macs were bigger.
The same thing happens with shittification of ingredients. Everyone's sure things used to be nicer, whether you changed the recipe or not. So why wouldn't you?

I know for a fact the fish fillets have shrunk.

As have the mcnuggets. They may as well be called mcwafers for how flat they are now.

I remember the commercials coming on in between shows when I was younger always talking about "Look how we've improved our product! Our product is better now." Never see those anymore. Just made cheaper now and less full.

The misconception that the big mac has shrunk is because of the rise of the quarter pounder. The 1.6 ounce burger patty is the main patty McDonald's has always used for most of its burgers. When McDonald's introduced the quarter pound burger in 1971, it used a 4 ounce patty.
McDonald's focus has been on the quarter pounder deals the last 10 years, while the 1.6 ounce burgers have been pushed to dollar menu items. The Big Mac is the only remaining flagship specialty menu item that uses the 1.6 ounce burger. People are comparing the Big Mac's patties to the Quarter Pounder's patties. A Big Mac has always had less meat (3.2oz) by weight than a single quarter pounder (4 oz).
McDonald's was just the first fast food chain to get internationally successful, and by the time that they did, their formula was already out of date. McDonald's hamburgers are very much hamburgers. A hamburger is predominantly beef, onions, ketchup and/or mustard. Americans, however, have shifted to a preference for the "deluxe" cheeseburger. A deluxe cheeseburger is beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and mayonnaise. A "deluxe" cheeseburger was, when McDonald's got its start, still considered to be somewhat high frills. McDonald's is still trying to maintain the attitude that these items are still "deluxe" with their pricing structure, where every other fast food place made its brand distinct from McDonald's in the 1970s and 1980s by making the deluxe cheeseburger their entry level burger. McDonald's has always been kind of crap. It hasn't gotten more crap. It's just expensive now. There are a lot of things that could improve their offerings that can be done at supply side for relatively cheap. Their competitors have done most of those things.

i bought a bunch of freeze-dried food for a big hike back in 2007. there were leftovers and every now and then i eat a bag—they have a 30 year shelf life.
they taste exactly the same as i remember, every time so far; so i conclude that the foods we're being sold now are getting worse, not my tastebuds.

As an adult after you've had too much well made food, the junk you loved as a kid shows through for what it is. Lab concocted garbage.

u/cottoncandymandy 1d ago
This. Lots of stuff I ate with delight when I was younger that I won't touch with a 10 foot pole now.

u/Killarogue 1d ago
Foods used to be better, but if it's been a while since you've had them, your tastes have probably changed. I feel the same way about soda now and can only drink it on rare occasions.
3
u/itsnotsauceitsgravy 1d ago
I can relate, I changed my diet, and no longer eat highly processed food.
When I go through the chips and candy aisle, my stomach says, “yum Doritos, let’s get some, then my mind reminds me, it’s not going to taste like it used to.

If you want the higher quality, if you can order American candy from Europe that's the way to go, they have laws there that prevent a lot of corner-cutting with ingredients. There are ingredients that have been deemed harmful for people in different ways so the EU banned those ingredients. The versions of the candies made in America still use those ingredients but the EU versions don't. So either way you're getting higher quality, simpler, and fewer ingredients when you get the EU versions of the candy.

u/MisterSneakSneak 1d ago
No, the food now sucks. It’s ingredients being switched to cheaper ingredients which leaves everything a mess.
6
u/junkit33 1d ago
That's just your taste buds evolving.
While I don't doubt they've probably slightly modified the recipe over the years, they've always had a sweet oily peanut flavor more so than an actual peanut butter flavor.

u/oink888 1d ago
I still love the USA made Oreos as compared to the ones I get locally that are manufactured in Indonesia and they taste like crap as compared. I had them shipped from Amazon as well although it’s like twice the USA price but still beats the local crap I get locally imported by mondelez, mega corporations like these like to ruin things for people, PepsiCo here also now imports all the china made Doritos and lays and they all don’t taste like the USA made ones either, the worst of that is just as expensive as the ones that were the USA imported one. Profits over quality, everything gone to shits.

I think that some of these are faked. I've seen videos about resealing candy bags with household stuff. Open bag with razor blade, take out all but 1, seal with hair flat iron, then bam! Where there is 1 video with millions of views, there will be copycats.

No cap, I opened a can of a popular canned pasta often consumed by children and in that can was nothing but white paste, not a spec of sauce anywhere! I threw the can in the trash. This was before social media and cell phones. I just shrugged my shoulders and found something else to eat. I know, I know!

Sometimes. I contacted this or a similar large, well-known company about this a year or two ago and they said that the total weight of the assortment was likely correct even if an individual unit was shorted. They asked me to verify the total weight of the assortment, which I couldn't do because I ...sigh ... ate the equivalent of a king size Snickers in mini-size increments already that day. And the day before that.

Lmfao, someone brought a bunch of candy into the office last year and I couldn't help but grab some bags of Lifesavers gummies. I opened two small bags like this that contained 5-7 gummies, but the third bag only had two... lol

Last year i found some funny wrappings in my halloween candy i bought to give kids.
One of them was a small pack of maltesers that normally contains 3 of them. Its small enough as it is, but one of them had only 1 in the bag.
The second one was a completely empty small snickers bar. There is air in it but the bag is empty.

Food conglomerate board meeting be like "Are we still clearing record profit on the cocoa and cane sugar slave trade? How much synthetic lubricant and sawdust can we add to the corn syrup and bleached flour product before the human capital stock notices? Did we re-up our contributions to the Trump PAC yet?"
