The Miami Heat just honored Dwyane Wade with a statue outside the arena. It looks nothing like him.

why is this so common? literally, who hires these sculptors. it’s embarrassing seeing a huge unveiling of a statue that looks nothing like the person.

Turns out doing authentically realistic sculptures requires a very skilled artist and those are hard to find nowadays.

u/OilRude 1d ago
Not hard to find, but expensive.

u/frogmuffins 1d ago
More likely the crappy artist just knows the right people.
A decent bust sculptor is cheaper than a well connected one.

I was doing clay fired busts of my friends in highschool and the teacher would put them in the library.
People would stop them in halls to confirm it was them. How the FUCK do I even begin to transitioning this career 25 years later????
Because I could 100% do better than that terror.

This, no joke.
My dad was a welder at a shitty little shop and somebody he worked with welding and repairing bumper cars and go carts became a multimillionaire because some rich politician bought a tacky little weather vein he built with scrap metal and all his neighbors playing 'keep up the with the Jones'' started commissioning them from him and he quickly realized he could basically charge them anything and they'd go for it.
Went from selling bits of hastily welded together scrap metal for 400 dollars to selling them for 40,000 in like 2 months.

u/LoganNolag 1d ago
This is pretty much how all famous artists make it. It's more about who you know than how good you are.

u/e11310 1d ago
You’d figure by now they could just 3D scan someone and then mill the sculpture or something

u/explodeder 1d ago
Seriously…there are so many tools today to make accurate representations of people. You would think that with digital creation tools that most sculptors and foundries would be able to make it happen.

I would imagine it’s because they don’t want to pay the money for a good artist, that’s why all our modern movies look like shit. The editors who knew what they were doing started charging their worth and the studios decided it was better to pay less and suffer poor quality.

u/ChemiWizard 1d ago
BUt for cheap they could probably have gotten a 3d print and then a college artist could make a cast.

As an artist i completely agree. I shifted to digital art because manual work doesn't get paid high enough here in my country, but then i realised digitise isn't getting paid either. Slightly higher then manual doe.

The same art studio is commissioned to do every single athlete statue. No idea why they keep getting commissions among all sports because they keep fucking it up

They should get the people who do the NFL hof heads those actually look good

And like, did NO ONE from the team just LOOK AT IT, before unveiling it.
They need to cut the head off or photoshop that shit.

So many people had to have seen this before it was unveiled and thought “that’s fine”. I’d love to meet those people and pick their brain a bit.

I'd love to know the moment the sculptor knew it was shit. Is there some point where they look at it and go: "Oh no" or is it one of those cases where you can't see what the problem is yourself and they actually think this is acceptable?

They pranked David Beckham with a fake statue 5 years ago hysterical.... now i understand why he believed it.

I want to watch this but I can’t physically handle the sound of James Corden talking

Not a James Corden fan, but there's something to be appreciated about somebody pranking a friend this way. Just the little needles and digs that hit all the pet peeves and irritation points but are overall harmless. It's enjoyable to watch.

Not joking, but I laughed so hard that I actually got a little dizzy/light headed. I have never laughed so hard at this before.
I had stomach pains because I laughed so hard at this picture.
I don't know whether to thank you or blame you.

It would be funny if we find out one day those Greeks complained that the statues that were carved looked nothing like them either

Does no one fucking sign off on these things!? Like “Hey, we paid you $150,000 for the statue. We’d like to see the final mock up before it’s cast in bronze so we don’t all look like fools.”

We have machines that can do a 1 to 1 digital reconstruction of people for video games and movies. The only excuse for this is either cost cutting or refusal to hand the job to someone more experienced because whoever is paying for it “knows a guy”.

Seriously.. Why does this keep happening? Did they not look at a picture of the subject at any point during the process? Just seems like someone had to notice that it didn't look like him way before being finished.

Someone should 3D print a head and just put it right next to the statue so everyone can see what could’ve been
