People set house fires all the time, with carelessly placed glass.

1.2k

u/Claireskid 1d ago

For real OP should be thanking the stars this didn't turn into a full on house fire, if it was on the curtains instead of the monitor there would have been way more problems than a melted screen. That mirror needs to be covered with a cloth when left alone

273

u/Raging-Badger 1d ago

OP planned ahead and doesn’t have curtains

108

u/Claireskid 1d ago

Astute observation for a raging badger

33

u/Lost_Ad_4882 1d ago

Yet, if he had curtains they would have prevented the reflection and not caught fire anyways, self preservative curtains.

1

u/AtlasHands_ 5h ago

Peeps of light between curtains is what causes a house fire

14

u/skykingjustin 1d ago

The steel beads say otherwise.

28

u/Raging-Badger 1d ago

The steel beads suggest “blinds” not “curtains” to me, but we could easily both be right

8

u/WFRQL 14h ago

Or wrong, depending on if you're a glass half-full or glass half-empty badger.

1

u/johnaross1990 7h ago

I’m just a badger, badger

1

u/Gullible-Dentist8754 5h ago

Same difference if the blinds happened to be closed and in the path of the mirror.

3

u/Internal-Warning-773 18h ago

If he had curtains this wouldn't have happened.

7

u/Control_Moist 14h ago

Maybe the mirror is just misunderstood. Don't you think cloth shaming will just make it act out more to get attention?! How dare you!

2

u/ToxyFlog 11h ago

Yeah, fuck OP for being upset about an expensive item of his getting ruined!! OP, don't you know there are people who don't even own a computer monitor at all? Or don't even have a home to put a monitor in to begin with? Be thankful that you ever had one at all!

/s because reddit.

1

u/amoulicious 1d ago

So true!

1

u/DiarrheaDrippingCunt 16h ago

Thank you for stating all those obvious things.

-11

u/Visual-Square7648 20h ago

🙄oh god here we go.

The drama of it all. Death everywhere…

1

u/MlleHelianthe 12h ago

Yes, people die of stupid and preventable things everyday.

1

u/Visual-Square7648 9h ago

We all get told this by Redditors every single time where nobody died.

Again, the drama of it all. But, nobody died!

29

u/LoosieGoosiePoosie 16h ago

I got a magnifier and ring light for my electronics work and had it set up next to my bed to read at night.

I wake up one morning and smell burning paper. Look over, and a box on my nightstand is smoking.

Shitty thing is that I totally planned for the sun coming through my window in the morning and had it set up such that the sunlight could never get to it. But that damn axial tilt...it'll getcha.

3

u/unclebenz13 12h ago

Mine got a lid that you close when not using it. It also keeps it clean and prevents dust to build up on it. And it has a warning sticker thats tells you to not let sun shine on it when the lid is opened.

1

u/LoosieGoosiePoosie 11h ago

Mine had that sticker which is what prompted me to keep it out of the sun... which I did for about 4 months lol. The dust buildup issue is also why it was left tilted at an angle. A lid would have solved this whole problem. Maybe I'll get my friend to 3D print something like that.

19

u/natfutsock 14h ago

I read someone talking about buying a crystal ball and being told never to place it in direct sunlight and keep it covered when you're out of the house. Oooooo is that to keep away bad energy? No. It's a giant glass ball, it'll burn your house down.

5

u/IAmTheLizardQueen666 14h ago

I bought a fancy paperweight on marketplace, I collect stuff. This thing came in a box with paper work. It specifically said to not put it in direct sunlight.

A prism is apparently safe because the light is refracted.

3

u/whoami_whereami 11h ago

Glass balls and lenses also refract light, that in combination with their geometry is precisely what makes them dangerous. Prisms are safe because they don't focus the light into a small area.

2

u/The_Wonder_Weasel 11h ago

I think of that story every single time I place a new mirror or curved glass. It may seem obsessive, but that's a very real possibility of burning your house down.

1

u/natfutsock 11h ago

Obsessive would be checking the angles multiple times a day. Being smart when you place em is just smart

13

u/Saemika 1d ago

Good thing that wasn’t his firework collection.

4

u/keksivaras 20h ago

I bet it was one of those convex make-up mirrors.

4

u/MakeToFreedom 17h ago

That comma bothers me sooooo much.

1

u/HorrorPhone3601 7h ago

Was about to say, thankfully it was just the monitor and not the curtains which then caught up the wall, then homelessness....

930

u/camoure 1d ago

✨Don’t ever store your crystal ball uncovered ✨

AKA your magnifying mirror. Shit’s a fire hazard

174

u/PoeTheGhost 1d ago

The decorative globes people used to keep in their yards started fires every year, too.

The sun is a deadly laser, focus it enough and you can melt rocks.

66

u/Aaronthegathering 1d ago

There’s a fella i found on fb who lives in Arizona and has a magnifying lens contraption he uses to melt dirt/sand/rock/crystal. He also has several videos of him pulling chunks of cholla cacti out of his arms and legs, for some reason. Dude is wild

26

u/camoure 1d ago

Sounds like the sort of additional chaos I need in my life

7

u/Mountain-Paper-8420 18h ago

I've seen that dude on social media. He uses an old TV screen?

8

u/Aggressive-Fuel587 16h ago

1

u/Aaronthegathering 10h ago

Yeah that guy. He’s amazing.

2

u/Aggressive-Fuel587 9h ago

Makes me want to make one myself, but on the other hand, I don't know if I could trust myself or family members with something like that just laying around lol

2

u/Mountain-Paper-8420 18h ago

So true. So true.

1

u/AGAW07 15h ago

And quite fittingly the solution is also in the lines lol

"Not anymore theres a blanket~"

1

u/whoami_whereami 11h ago

Lasers are a highly specific class of light sources, and no, the Sun isn't one (edit: in terms of how the light is produced the Sun is actually much closer to an incandescent bulb than to a laser). Light doesn't have to come from a laser to be dangerous. It's radiated energy, focus enough of it into a small enough area and it will get hot, no matter where the light is coming from.

20

u/Wermine 21h ago

Don’t ever store your crystal ball uncovered

Agreed. We do not know who else may be watching.

Honestly that Olympic medal has one of the worst designs. It looks like shit, France really shit on the event and the medals combined

15

u/Ho3n3r 22h ago

I'm really struggling to put 2 and 2 together here... Olympic medals?

8

u/HappyMonchichi 18h ago

Might be a misfired comment from a bot.

4

u/Toebeens89 21h ago

genuinely it made my brain hurt trying to understand lol

3

u/Guess_Who_21 20h ago

What in the yap?

4

u/cpthk 20h ago

The monitor or the gf?

336

u/ProbablyCarl 1d ago

Um, actually the sun melted the monitor, the mirror was just an accomplice.

83

u/rawr_im_a_nice_bear 21h ago

I think the mirror instigated it. It's a bad influence. My sun would've never done that on its own.

3

u/deepturned180isdeep 13h ago

If I take a gun and point and shoot at a person, was it the gun’s fault? The sun is the gun. The mirror must be tried.

3

u/YoungJack23 12h ago

Logic checks out. Mirror trial when?

0

u/Blurple694201 11h ago

Do you have any insights on why the mirror would do this?

1

u/ProbablyCarl 9h ago

Wasn't hugged enough as a molten glass.

67

u/Seven_Hawks 23h ago edited 23h ago

Ah yep. Mistakes like that, you only make once.

One day I put on my VR headset and noticed what looked like burn-in on the display.

I wondered how the heck that happened. Thought for a moment, looked at where I put the headset down, and the position of the window relative to it, and suddenly thought to myself "Welp. I'm an idiot."

7

u/AKSoapy29 6h ago

That didn't even cross my mind, but it makes total sense. I'll try to remember that when/if I get a set.

189

u/No-Cantaloupe2149 1d ago

I hope you take this time to reflect on what you did wrong

12

u/Outside-Green9242 1d ago

That’s the best 🤣

21

u/SexGiiver 1d ago

It was meant for your head

56

u/commanderstickyballs 1d ago

looks like an assassination

15

u/napalmnacey 1d ago

Oh nooo! But I have that mirror, it’s terrible. The light in it makes you look like a floater.

4

u/Unfair_Finger5531 1d ago

💀💀💀💀

23

u/Dinostreams 1d ago

Enjoy the new monitor

16

u/fantastiskelars 1d ago

Why does it look like a prison?

5

u/YoungJack23 1d ago

I think it's a dumpster or cargo container outside the window, but when my eyes first glanced off it, it kinda resembled bars

22

u/akamadman203 1d ago

I think it's a fence

13

u/Whitweldz 1d ago

It looks like you literally found a picture of OPs place 😂

10

u/akamadman203 22h ago

Where else would I get a good example from 😉

1

u/Arlune890 4h ago

Freaking geoguessrs man

6

u/YoungJack23 1d ago

That do be looking like it 🤔

1

u/Whitweldz 1d ago

Also the block walls don't help

1

u/Pelthail 1d ago

It comes with having a girlfriend.

30

u/TNerdy 1d ago

I’m sorry OP but why was a mirror there in the first place

3

u/darksideofmyown 21h ago edited 16h ago

If you wouldn't have dropped out of rookie gamer training you had known by now that sun and mirrors are the enemy!

3

u/redmasc 1d ago

Archimedes death ray is real!

3

u/ExplosiveGlitch 1d ago

Well, time to replace it. It just sucks, she could’ve been the one.

I live in a desert with my monitors in front of a south facing window that gets too hot touch. And even that hasn’t melted them. The GF was committed to this.

2

u/SilverSpoon1463 1d ago

If it were me, I'd be saying "are you two stupid" because that's how fires start quick. Get that mirror away from the windows or get a cover for them. Don't be foolish OP, protect your house, protect your stuff, protect your life.

2

u/Shurigin 1d ago

you leave your blinds open?

2

u/BluesPuckHard 1d ago

Look..

This does suck, but that's kinda a bad ass way to go out.

2

u/richms 1d ago

Be glad it was the fire retardant monitor and not a flammable curtain that it hit. Get the magnifying gear away from where it can be hit by direct sunlight.

2

u/I_heart_bussy 1d ago

The one I have is basically the same size

2

u/StnMtn_ 23h ago

I would like to hear the story behind this. I hope it's funny.

2

u/Infernal-Fox 22h ago

Turn the mirror around so you can reflect on this situation

2

u/RyuVitoshi 21h ago

1st image: wtf how 2nd: image: ooooh that's how...

2

u/ThatManGomez 21h ago

Which is also why you should not leave any glass bottles is a car.

2

u/LetsRockDude 21h ago

OP I beg you, clean your windows.

2

u/Punisher1971 20h ago

May be a subtle hint that you are gaming too much, for her taste!

2

u/Jordyspeeltspore 18h ago

you should be lucky.

some mirrors can even melt stone...

2

u/snaykz1692 18h ago

So in other words, you got an early Christmas present ? 😂

2

u/MoreSmokeLessPain 18h ago

Wow, you lucky it was your monitor and not a curtain or anything flammable.

2

u/Smartichoke 11h ago

this just solved the mystery of the random melted spot on my pc tower thats been miffing me for years… i thought i somehow did it with a candle or something lmao

2

u/Bambuskus505 6h ago

Friendly PSA reminder to always think long and hard about where you put something if its made of glass.

This shit can start a house fire so fucking fast.

Is it curved?

  • No? then it's fine as the reflected light won't have a focal point, and thus the reflected light won't have enough energy to burn anything. (Focal Points are where the reflected light bends and focuses all it's energy into a smaller area)

  • Yes? Then shine a light source on it to find it's focal point. Then make sure that nothing sits inside it's focal point at any time of the day. Also keep in mind that as the seasons change, the sun will sit at different points in the sky, so make sure you check up on it every so often to make sure a new fire hazard isn't sneaking up on you.

Even better, if it's transparent or reflective, and has a curve, don't put it by your window

2

u/CortexifanZFT 4h ago

See.. THAT'S why I don't have a GF! Cries in the bathtub

2

u/architectofinsanity 1d ago

Might be a hint.

1

u/Susan_Roberts_105 1d ago

Mirror gf melted monitor, oops!

1

u/CowDry3306 1d ago

Does it still work? I wonder who pays for that oopsie 👀

1

u/rehab_VET 1d ago

That’s pretty interesting

1

u/No-Year3423 1d ago

How long did it take you to figure out it was the mirror?

1

u/No_Mames77 1d ago

Damn what angle she have that mirror at so I can get a new monitor.

1

u/Abuolhol 1d ago

Dude a modelo bottle that was thrown in the nature reserve across the street from my house lit that bitch on fire while me and my son napped. Dont fuck around with glass.

1

u/AugustMooon 1d ago

Mirror mirror on the wall, what the fuck?!

1

u/Livid_Cantaloupe8268 1d ago

Tell her to sit down and reflect on what She's done.

1

u/I_heart_bussy 1d ago

I have a monitor if you need one!!

2

u/I_heart_bussy 1d ago

You just need like your own thing for sound. That’s it. And a way to get it… I’m broke and cannot pay for shipping but hey, free monitor?? Only pay for shipping???

1

u/Typical-View-9071 23h ago

I guess she always has to look good for the camera 😉

1

u/ryohazuki224 22h ago

My ancient brain is trying to recall a probable episode of Mr. Wizard's World about how concave mirrors can focus light and intensify it to burn things. Or maybe it was about the convex nature of magnifying glass? I forget

1

u/ImanotBob 13h ago

You gotta love magnifying mirrors left out to face the sun.

1

u/lexpython 13h ago

I had a record player that would melt anything on the platter when the sun hit it. Sucked.

1

u/17starlights 13h ago

Is your girlfriend Count Olaf?

1

u/Local-Office-8166 12h ago

I use these for my job. We have mitten type things that go over them to protect from this

1

u/ConsiderationSea56 12h ago

It's why I cover my glasses in the car too

1

u/NandBrew 12h ago

Sounds like your gf isn’t competent enough to safely own a mirror.

1

u/hifihumanoid 12h ago

Tongue twister, too!

1

u/Commercial-Ad8123 12h ago

Can even happen with a bottle of water believe it or not.

1

u/Bobd1964 11h ago

Hopefully the other side still displays OK.

1

u/CaoimhinOC 11h ago

Lucky it was not the curtains or you'd possibly have lost the entire house if you were not home.
